Article Do Users Sacrifice Security for Speed and Ease-of-Use on Smartphones?: A Case Study on Attitude(2020) Koyuncu, Murat; Nakip, Mahir; Nakip, Mahir; 51704; Uluslararası Ticaret ve FinansmanStoring credentials on smartphones to perform online activities increases ease-of-use (EoU) and speed. This work aims to find potential relationships between security perceptions of smartphone users and their ease-of-use and speed preferences. Two user attitudes are defined as “not considering risk” and “risk exaggeration.” User ease-of-use and speed preferences are limited with the factors related to storing credentials on a smartphone and always keeping the device online. A survey of 154 participants was conducted through convenience sampling. In this study, we investigate the impact of transmission power heterogeneity on the lifetime of WSNs through a novel Linear Programming (LP) framework both for networks that utilize only bidirectional links and for those that can use bidirectional links as well as unidirectional links. Our results show that transmission power heterogeneity can lead to more than 25 % decrease in network lifetime for networks that utilize only bidirectional links when compared to a network without any heterogeneity. However, since smartphones can contain valuable information, they normally become the target of attackers. A physically lost or a hacked smartphone may cause catastrophic results for its owner. To prevent such undesired events, smartphone users should be aware of existing threats and countermeasures to be taken against them. Therefore, user awareness is a critical factor for smartphone security. This study investigates the awareness level of smartphone users for different security-related parameters and compares the awareness levels of different user groups categorized according to their demographic data. It is based on a survey study conducted on a population with a different range of age, education level, and IT security expertise. According to the obtained results, in general, the awareness level of participants is fairly low, which needs considerable improvement. In terms of age, the oldest group has the lowest level followed by the youngest group. Education level, in general, has a positive effect on the awareness level. Transmission power heterogeneity and random irregularities are important factors that create unidirectional links. Majority of the internode data transfer mechanisms are designed to work on bidirectional links (i.e., due to the lack of a direct reverse path, handshaking cannot be performed between a transmitter and receiver) which render the use of unidirectional links infeasible. Yet, there are some data transfer mechanisms designed specifically to operate on unidirectional links which employ distributed handshaking mechanisms (i.e., instead of using a direct reverse path, a multi-hop reverse path is used for the handshake). In this study, we investigate the impact of both transmission power heterogeneity and random irregularities on the lifetime of WSNs through a novel linear programming (LP) framework both for networks that utilize only bidirectional links and for those that can use bidirectional links as well as unidirectional links.
