Article Citation - WoS: 23Citation - Scopus: 31An Integrated Framework on Soundscape Perception and Spatial Experience by Adapting Post-Occupancy Evaluation Methodology(Sage Publications Inc, 2018) Aburawis, Ayad A. Mohamed; Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; 05.01. İç Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThe effecting factors of soundscape perception and space experience have a very close relationship. This study aims to synthesize the diversity of soundscape classifications and schemes and unify such factorial variations in order to develop an integrated framework for soundscape perception and spatial experience within a systematic review of recent progress and by adapting post-occupancy evaluation methodology. First, factors under soundscape perception and space experience are reviewed in detail and merged to form conceptual classification models. Six soundscape perception factors are formed as (1) sonic, (2) spatial, (3) temporal, (4) psychological, (5) behavioural and (6) personal. Similarly, five space experience factors are formed as (1) user, (2) usage, (3) architectural design, (4) social context and (5) physical environment. All related items in the literature are presented and the sub-items under each factor are exemplified. Second, factors under the merged conceptual models are integrated by considering occupants' experience of space regarding their variance in perception of soundscapes through acoustical post-occupancy evaluation. An adapted study design is proposed under indicative, investigative and diagnostic stages of the post-occupancy evaluation by presenting the methods, data types and factorial correlations for each stage.Article Citation - WoS: 44Citation - Scopus: 58Analysing Sound Environment and Architectural Characteristics of Libraries Through Indoor Soundscape Framework(Polska Akad Nauk, Polish Acad Sciences, inst Fundamental Tech Res Pas, 2016) Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; Kang, Jian; 214925; 05.01. İç Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThis study presents the indoor soundscape framework in detail by describing the variables and factors that form an indoor soundscape study. The main objective is to introduce a new indoor soundscaping framework and systematically explain the variables that contribute to the overall evaluation of an indoor soundscape. Hence, the dependencies of physical and psychoacoustical factors of the sound environment and the spatial factors of the built entity are statistically tested. The new indoor soundscaping framework leads to an overarching evaluation perspective of enclosed sound environments, combining objective room acoustics research and noise control engineering with architectural analysis. Therefore, it is hypothesised that case spaces with certain plan organisations, volumetric relations, and spatial referencing lead to differentiated sound pressure level (SPL) and loudness (N) values. SPL and N parametric variances of the sound environments are discussed through the statistical findings with respect to the architectural characteristics of each library case space. The results show that the relation between crowd level variances and sound environment parametric values is statistically significant. It is also found that increasing the atrium height and atrium void volume, the atrium's presence as a common architectural element, and its interpenetrating reference and domain containment results in unwanted variances and acoustic formations, leading to high SPL and N values.Article Citation - WoS: 18Citation - Scopus: 24Comparing Turkish and European Noise Management and Soundscape Policies: a Proposal of Indoor Soundscape Integration To Architectural Design and Application(Mdpi, 2019) Ercakmak, Ugur Beyza; Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; 214925; 05.01. İç Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiImproving soundscape studies and policies states that the soundscape approach, which also considers noise interventions, should replace noise management. However, a considerable number of soundscape studies have been concerned with the quality of acoustic environments of open and urban public spaces. This study focuses on indoor soundscaping and its possible integration into the architectural design and application process. Therefore, the present and ongoing Turkish and European soundscape and noise management policies were evaluated in detail and compared in order to characterize the gap regarding the state of indoor soundscaping between the literature and the policy development level. Furthermore, we identified and classified factors and methods which have an influence on indoor soundscaping to be integrated into the final proposed model. As a result of the detailed evaluation regarding policies and indoor soundscaping principles, five stages were proposed that can be used in an integrated indoor soundscape model: (1) the establishment of a topic specific institution or working group on indoor soundscaping; (2) the preparation of a standard that includes definitions, indoor soundscape factors and methods; (3) the preparation of an indoor soundscape directive; (4) the preparation of indoor soundscape guidelines; and (5) the provision of maintenance and supervision by experts and authorities.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Evaluation of the Turkish Soundscape Circumplex Model, and the Effects of Sound Source Dominance, Sequence, and Gender on the Perceived Affective Quality(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2024) Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; Bayrak, Ozlem Turker; Coban, Nilguen Akbulut; Osma, Ugur Beyza Ercakmak; 09.01. Ortak Dersler Bölümü; 05.01. İç Mimarlık; 09. Rektörlük; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThe International Standard Organization (ISO) standards series on soundscape for the identification, data collection and data analysis present a general framework for the soundscape studies that are conducted globally. Perceived Affective Qualities (PAQs) including 8 soundscape perceptual attributes in ISO/TS 12913-2:2018 and ISO/TS 12913-3:2019 are published in English language. Therefore, the 'Soundscape Attributes Translation Project' focuses on the reliable standardized translations of the PAQs in other languages. In the previously published Turkish translation and validation study, the PAQs were presented as; 'hareketli' (eventful), 'coskulu' (vibrant), 'keyifli' (pleasant), 'sakin' (calm), 'dura.gan' (uneventful), 'tekduze' (monotonous), 'rahatsiz edici' (annoying), and 'karmas ik' (chaotic). Within the scope of this follow-up study, firstly, sound sources in each audio stimulus are identified according to their dominance to explore their relation with the Soundscape Circumplex Model (SCM) quadrants and found that the human dominant audio stimuli are evaluated as 'vibrant' in SCM. Other noise dominating audio stimuli are categorized as 'monotonous' while traffic combined with other noise audio stimuli are evaluated as 'chaotic'. When the audio stimuli evaluated as 'calm' are investigated, they are either purely dominated by natural sounds or mixture of each category dominated by natural sounds. Secondly, a comparison between the Turkish and the English participants' evaluation of audio stimuli according to the SCM is done and found that they are similar except two audio stimuli. Furthermore, the effect of audio stimulus sequence and gender on 8 PAQs are statistically analysed through Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests; respectively and found that both are significant. The sequences shifting from 'chaotic' to 'calm' or vice versa frequently are seen to be evaluated with higher scores whereas more homogenous ones in sequence, i.e. audio stimuli having the same dominating sound source are sequenced together mostly are graded with lower scores of 8 PAQs except 'chaotic' compared to drastic changes in the sound source and found that men grade 'cos kulu' (vibrant), 'dura.gan' (uneventful), 'tekduze' (monotonous), 'rahatsiz edici' (annoying) and 'karmasik' (chaotic) more than women by 5, 11, 24, 8 and 10 points, respectively according to the median values. Finally, conformance to the SCM is evaluated by the principal component analysis (PCA) and found that it can be reduced to two dimensions named as "pleasantness" and "eventfulness" in expected order but the main PAQs pleasant-annoying and eventful-uneventful are not aligned indicating the lack of achieving the ideal circumplexity. It is believed that the results of this study could contribute to both national and international future soundscape research with a focus on listening tests applying PAQs.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Impact of Indoor Soundscape Workshop on Sound Awareness of Interior Architecture Studentsa)(Acoustical Soc Amer Amer inst Physics, 2025) Al-Bayyar, Zinah; Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; Kitapci, Kivanc; Bayrak, Ozlem Turker; 09.01. Ortak Dersler Bölümü; 05.01. İç Mimarlık; 09. Rektörlük; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThis study aims to investigate the effects of attending a soundscape workshop on the awareness of sound as a design element for interior architects. The workshop is structured in three phases: theoretical lectures, practical applications, and discussions. In the first phase, fundamentals of architectural acoustics, the sense of place, and soundscape theory were delivered through theoretical lectures. In the second phase, participants were asked to design a sound environment for a restaurant and an office. In the third and final phase, participants discussed their sound designs from the perspectives of the lectures and sound-related topics. Additionally, participants completed an open-ended questionnaire to evaluate their workshop experience and provided suggestions for improvement. The effectiveness of the workshop in raising awareness was tested using a pre-test/post-test analysis method, with data collected through structured questionnaires completed by participants before and after the workshop. The results of the statistical analysis show that attending the workshop changed participants' evaluations of sound expectations and preferences, as well as their sensitivity to sound. The findings indicate that participating in an indoor soundscape workshop can positively influence interior architects' understanding of sound as a design element to be considered in their future work. İç Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiStudies in the literature suggest that factors influencing soundscape perception are based heavily on sound environments and auditory perception. Nevertheless, in studying the soundscape perception of people living in certain acoustic environments, cultural, social and habitual criteria should be taken into consideration. Residential environments are where people spend most of their time. Therefore, understanding the soundscape perception in the residential context is significant for indoor soundscape studies. This research investigates the residential soundscape perception differences of two different culture groups living in Ankara, Turkey. A total of 405 Arab and Turkish residents are included in the study. The questionnaire findings are statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance and t-test. The results suggest that the sound environment in a house setting is equally important for both culture groups, while the Arab residents showed a higher satisfaction level from their present sound environment in their residences. Furthermore, statistically significant differences have been found based on cultural variances of the two groups regarding the overall soundscape perception, sound source loudness, frequency of occurrence, and sound favourability evaluations.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 7Semiotic Interpretation of a City Soundscape(Walter de Gruyter Gmbh, 2019) Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; Onur, Ayse Zeynep Ustun; 214925; 05.02. Mimarlık; 05.01. İç Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThis work presents a semiotic perspective of aspects of a soundscape evaluation of the city, Supino located in the Province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio. The data and sound sample collection was accomplished through the soundwalk technique undertaken by students of Cankaya University, School of Architecture during the 'Third International Summer School in Supino' 17-24 August 2014. For the soundscape evaluation, three zones were identified in Supino as urban, suburban, and intersection. A total of nine samples across three zones were collected during three different times in a day by soundwalks from the areas located in the identified zones. A theoretical model of semiotic interpretations of soundscapes has been proposed and applied for the analysis of Supino's soundscape. The results showed that the soundscape of Supino differs according to its cultural, habitual, and anthropological tendencies. In addition, the semantic analysis shows that the soundscape composition of the sound sources in the three zones varies by the change of time, sound composition and sources, topography, and settlement of the city.
