Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 1A New Route for Regional Planning in Turkey: Recent Developments(Springer international Publishing Ag, 2019) Ozdemir, Suna S.; 25219Since the 1930s, regional plans have been drawn up for various regions in Turkey. However, the institutional practice of regional development policy as well as regional planning began with the establishment of the State Planning Organisation in 1960. After the 1960s, through Five-Year National Development Plans, a regional development policy was defined, and regional development plans were formulated for some specific regions. In practice, there were some challenges and problems during that period in regional planning. The shift in the regional development policy and regional planning began in 1999 with Turkey's accession period to the European Union. For adaptation to the EU's regional policy, some newpolicies, legislation, and institutional set-ups were defined. This chapter mainly focuses on these new policies and instruments, namely the new route taken by regional planning in Turkey.Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0At the convergence of energy corridors: energy situation in Turkey and a critical evaluation with Porter's model(Igi Global, 2017) Gokmen, Aytac; Nakip, Mahir; 17660; 118963; Uluslararası Ticaret ve FinansmanTurkey is at the threshold of Eurasia connecting various energy corridors. It has an improving economic volume and is one of the 20 largest economies in the world. Energy and economic development are highly correlated. Turkey is dependent on imported energy. In order to keep up with the economic expansion, the energy requirements of Turkey must be met in a diversified, timely and reliable way. Thus, the aim of this paper is to define the geographic disposition of Turkey at the convergence of energy lines, review its energy situation comprehensively and make critical evaluations on energy and economy related issues, also with using the diamond model developed by Michael E. Porter resting on credible national and international publications and data.Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Can Term Structure of Interest Rate Predict Inflation and Real Economic Activity: Nonlinear Evidence From Turkey?(Springer, 2011) Omay, Tolga; 19320; Çankaya Meslek YüksekokuluBook Part Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Cantor-Type Spherical-Coordinate Method for Differential Equations Within Local Fractional Derivatives(de Gruyter Open Ltd, 2015) Rahmat, Mohamad Rah Segi; Baleanu, Dumitru; Yang, Xiao-Jun; MatematikIn this article, we utilize the Cantor-type spherical coordinate method to investigate a family of local fractional differential operators on Cantor sets. Some examples are discussed to show the capability of this method for the damped wave, Helmholtz and heat conduction equations defined on Cantor sets. We show that it is a powerful tool to convert differential equations on Cantor sets from Cantorian-coordinate systems to Cantor-type spherical-coordinate systems.Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0Clean Energy Generation in Residential Green Buildings- CH2(inst Engineering Tech-iet, 2019) Yapici, Ekin Ozgirgin; Ayli, EceDue to the recent investigations, buildings consume a considerable amount of the electricity, drinking water, global final energy use and as a result are responsible for one third of the global carbon emissions. The physiological environment (body fluid) is considered to be extremely corrosive to metallic surfaces; and corrosion is one of the major problems to the widespread use of the metals in the human body since the corrosion products can cause infections, local pain, swelling, and loosening of the implants. Recently, the most common corrosion-resistant metallic biomaterials are made of stainless steels and titanium and its alloys along with cobalt chromium molybdenum alloys. It is well known that protective surface films of the alloys play a key role in corrosion of the metallic implants. Key documents on the corrosion behavior of the metallic biomaterials in human body have been compiled under this chapter as a review.Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Coupling the local fractional Laplace transform with analytic methods(Academic Press Ltd-elsevier Science Ltd, 2016) Yang, Xiao-Jun; Baleanu, Dumitru; Srivastava, H. It has the potential to create many new materials and devices with wide-ranging applications, such as in medicine, electronics and energy production. There are many entry barriers which can affect nanotechnology penetration in developing and emerging nations. This chapter discusses such barriers for Turkey. Despite about 10 universities having nanotechnology programs, the number of nanotechnology firms in the country is still low. Using combinations of interviews, surveys and literature, these issues that continue to stall the commercialization of discoveries in Turkey are examined.Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0Epitaxial Graphene and Carbon Nanotubes on Silicon Carbide(Crc Press-taylor & Francis Group, 2014) Buke, Goknur C.; Buke, Goknur C.Graphene (i.e., a single layer of graphite) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs; i.e., graphene rolled into a cylinder) are excellent candidate materials for advanced applications because of their unique electrical, optical, and mechanical properties combined with a high surface area. The successful development of graphene-/CNT-based technology depends on large-scale availability of the high-quality, reproducible, and uniformly ordered material. One of the most versatile methods to produce vertically, self-aligned CNTs and epitaxial graphene is the vacuum annealing of silicon carbide single crystals [1,2]. This is a very versatile method because carbon is supplied from the carbide lattice as known from the synthesis of carbide-derived carbons (CDCs, see Figure 4.1) and, as no catalysts or secondary phases are utilized; the produced graphene and CNTs exhibit extremely high purity. However, to increase the grain/domain size and quality of these carbon nanostructures, further control of the process is needed. © 2014 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 1Evaluation of the Issues and Challenges in Turkey’s Urban Planning System(Springer international Publishing Ag, 2019) Sari, O. Burcu Ozdemir; Ozdemir, Suna S.; Uzun, NilThis concluding chapter focuses particularly on the period, which starts with the 2002 general elections, covering almost the last 15 years of the country. In this period, Turkish cities have experienced significant spatial and social transformations. This raises a number of issues and challenges for urban and regional planning in Turkey. The current urban and regional planning agenda worldwide covers dozens of topics. ForTurkey, three issues have become prominent: (i) actors (and institutions) other than planners (and planning) that have control capacity in the production and transformation of the built environment, and adverse effects of their actions on the integrity of urban plans and the control capacity of urban planning, (ii) the need to achieve resilient, safe, and sustainable urban environments, and (iii) consequences of population growth and the spatial expansion of cities as well as the problems stemming from the current efforts at urban transformation. Some cross-cutting issues and significant points among the chapters of the book are emphasised in this chapter. The Turkish case provides useful examples and fruitful discussions for international readers from developed and developing countries.Book Part Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 8Failure Modes in Structural Applications of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites and Their Prevention(Woodhead Publ Ltd, 2013) Gunes, O.Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials have been increasingly used in civil engineering applications in the past two decades. Their wide ranging use, however, is still not realized due to a few fundamental issues including high material costs, relatively short history of applications and the gaps in the development of established standards. Design safety requires that all possible modes and mechanisms of failure are identified, characterized, and accounted for in the design procedures. This chapter provides a review of the failure types encountered in structural engineering applications of FRP and the preventive methods and strategies that have been developed to eliminate or delay such failures. As part of preventive measures, various non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) methods used for monitoring FRP applications are discussed with illustrative examples.Book Part Citation - WoS: 1Globalization, firm performance and group affiliation inemerging markets: evidence from turkey(Asers Publishing, 2013) Karadagli, Ece Ceylan; 17735Although the process of globalization deeply affects businesses in all aspects, unfortunately, the firm level effects of globalization are highly unexplored in the literature. This research aims to explore how the overall globalization level of a country as well as her economic, her political and her social globalization levels affect the performance of both the group affiliated and the unaffiliated firms, operating in this business environment by using pooled panel analysis. To search for the potential differences that may prevail between the firm performance effects of globalization on the group affiliated firms and on the unaffiliated firms, it focuses on Turkish listed companies for the period 2002-2009. The findings of the study indicate that while globalization improves the stock returns of both the group affiliated and the unaffiliated firms, it deteriorates the operational income of both groups of firms. The findings also imply that although the effects of economic and political globalization do not seem to differentiate much between the group affiliated and the unaffiliated firms, social globalization may be argued to affect the operating incomes and the firm growth rates of group affiliated and unaffiliated firms differently. Last but not least, the findings suggest that the most influential dimension of globalization in terms of its effects on firm performance for Turkish companies seems to be the economic globalization.Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 6Innovation Cluster Development Potential In the Regions of Turkey: A Geographical Perspective(Igi Global, 2013) Sakarya, Arif Orcun; 19342; İşletmeThe assessment of firms' innovativeness levels in a specific territory can be assumed to be an important indicator of future innovative collaboration, some of which might also be cluster setup initiatives. Assuming that geographical proximity can also provide a favorable opportunity for strengthening interfirm ties, the goal of the chapter is to discover the best innovation variables for Turkish firms in terms of being members of potential innovative cluster formations. Following an overview of the innovation parameters used in the study, the current situation of the firms in question and their problems are briefly stated. The analysis part includes a regression test to discover the variables affecting firms' innovativeness in order to tackle the problems stated. Regression results have shown that intellectual capital, technology infrastructure, and geographical concentration levels affect the innovation performance of the firms in different regions. The conclusion involves further policy improvements for empowering regional innovation capabilities.Book Part Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Integrating the Resilience Perspective into the Turkish Planning System: Issues and Challenges(Springer international Publishing Ag, 2019) Kaya, Deniz Altay; 54723Within the last decade, resilience has become both a major planning framework and a development goal for cities and regions facing a plethora of problems in different fields and at different scales. This chapter aims to identify the challenges that await governments when they integrate a resilience thinking framework into their planning systems. The chapter first provides a short explanation on the significance of resilience planning and then outlines a structural model for incorporating the social, economic, political, and institutional requirements in resilience thinking in city and regional planning. Next, the chapter provides a short analysis of the Turkish planning system to reveal its inherent problems and the issues that are likely to be most challenging in a shift towards resilience planning. Finally, based on the provided analyses, the chapter provides a critical discussion on the challenges in operationalizing resilience planning in the Turkish context. The findings reveal that there is a need for restructuring especially in Turkey's institutional and legislative framework to improve coordination and cooperation, to assure the use of scientific knowledge within the decision-making processes, and to actualize the praxes of participation and engaged governance.Book Part Citation - WoS: 0Local fractional derivatives of elementary functions(Academic Press Ltd-elsevier Science Ltd, 2016) Yang, Xiao-Jun; Baleanu, Dumitru; Srivastava, H.
