    The Effects of Labor Market Reforms on the Labor Market Transitions: Evidence From Turkey

    Bu makalede, işgücü piyasası reformlarının işgücü piyasası performansını belirlemedeki rolünün Gelir ve Yaşam Koşulları Anketi'nin 2006-2010 panel verisi kullanılarak incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, istihdam, işsizlik ve işgücü dışında olma şeklindeki üç farklı işgücü piyasası durumu arasında bireylerin Markov geçiş olasılıkları hesaplanmaktadır. Sonuçlar, 2008 krizi ertesinde uygulmaya koyulan iyileştirici işgücü piyasası politika ve uygulamalarının krizin Türkiye işgücü piyasası üzerindeki olumsuz etkisini hafifletmede rol oynadığına işaret etmektedir. Bu sonuç özellikle hedeflenen genç ve kadınların oluşturduğu dezavantajlı gruplar için çok daha net bir şekilde ortaya çıkmaktadır.

    Profitability of Brokerage Houses in Turkey

    This paper uses a direct measure of efficiency to examine the relationship between market structure and the performance of brokerage houses in Turkey. This methodology involves two stages: First, a stochastic translog cost frontier is specified to obtain a direct measure of efficiency. Second, this measure is included in a profitability equation along with market concentration and market share variables. These two equations are then estimated using quarterly data from 112 brokerage houses for the period 2008-2015. The results show that the efficiency of brokerage houses does not influence profitability when measured directly. Market share, on the other hand, is found to be one of the main determinants of profitability, providing support for the relative market power hypothesis.

    The Effects of Federal Regulations on Corruption in Us States

    Using the newly constructed Federal Regulation and State Enterprise Index (FRASE Index) to measure the federal regulations and the existing Corruption Convictions Index (CCI), we investigate the effects of federal regulations on corruption in U.S. states. Controlling for several demographic and economic variables including the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom Index (EFI), which measures the size and scope of government in U.S. states, we find a positive and statistically significant relationship between federal regulations and corruption. Our findings have important policy implications. A 1 standard deviation increase in FRASE Index causes CCI to increase by approximately 0.5 standard deviations. Standardized coefficient of EFI is also approximately equal to 0.5. In other words, it is possible to mitigate the effects of regulations at the federal level by reducing the size and the scope of the government at the state level.

    Türk İmalat Sektöründe Reklam Yoğunluğu Belirleyicilerinin Panel Veri Analizi

    Bu çalışmada 66 dört haneli Türk imalat endüstrisi için 1993–1999 dönemine ait panel veriler kullanılarak reklam yoğunluğunun belirleyenleri araştırılmaktadır. Havuzlanmış en küçük kareler ve sabit etkiler regresyonlarından elde edilen sonuçlar reklam yoğunluğu ile yoğunlaşma arasında bir kuadratik ilişkinin varlığını ortaya koymuştur: Reklam yoğunluğu yoğunlaşma oranı ile birlikte önce artmakta, yoğunlaşma oranı belli bir eşik değerin üzerine çıktığında yoğunlaşma oranındaki artışlar reklam yoğunluğunu azalmaktadır. Sonuçlar ayrıca, daha kârlı ve daha hızlı büyüyen endüstrilerin daha yoğun reklam verdiğini göstermiştir. Ürün dayanıklılığı, ihracat yoğunluğu ve tüketim malları satışı reklam yoğunluğunu etkileyen diğer faktörler olarak görünmektedir. Ancak, bu faktörlere ilişkin kanıtlar çok güçlü değildir.

    An Empirical Analysis of Household Education Expenditures in Turkey

    Using Turkish Household Budget Surveys from 2003, 2007 and 2012, this paper investigates the determinants of household education expenditures within an Engel curve framework. In particular, we estimate Tobit regressions of real educational expenditures by income groups using a number of household characteristics (i.e. rural residence, employment status, age, educational attainment of the household head, household size, share of female students and primary school students in the household, and total number of students in the household) to examine if and to what extent the determinants of educational expenditures differ by income groups; income elasticities of educational spending evolves over time; and children from middle-class and poor families can benefit enough from educational opportunities. The estimated expenditure elasticities have lower values for the top- and the bottom income quartiles while they have larger values for the middle-income quartiles. The results also show that for all income groups the expenditure elasticity of education increases over time, indicating that Turkish households allocates greater share of their budgets to education expenditures.     Factors Determining Female Labor Force Participation in Turkey

    Bu tezin temel amacı, Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu'nun 2019 verileri ışığında, çalışabilecek durumda olan kadınların işgücüne katılımını belirleyen faktörleri ekonometrik analiz yöntemleriyle ortaya koymak ve Türkiye'de kadınların işgücüne katılımını ve istihdamını artırmaya yönelik politika önerilerinde bulunmaktır. Çalışma kapsamında gerçekleştirilen lojistik ve probit regresyon analizleri, kadınların işgücüne katılım olasılığını olumlu ve olumsuz yönde etkileyen faktörleri ortaya koymuştur. Tahminlerden elde edilen bulgular, eğitim ve hanehalkı büyüklüğü gibi faktörlerin kadın işgücüne katılımını olumlu yönde etkilerken, kadının bakmakla yükümlüğü olduğu küçük çocuk sayısı ve evli olma gibi faktörlerin ise olumsuz yönde etkilediğini göstermiştir. Kadının işgücüne katılımını artırmaya yönelik olarak, çalışmanın sonuçlarından çıkarılabilecek en önemli politika önermesi, kadınların eğitim almalarının teşvik edilmesi ve eğitime erişimlerinin önündeki engellerin kaldırılması gerekliliğidir. Bunun yanında, uygun ücretlerle sağlanacak kreş ve diğer çocuk bakım hizmetlerinin yaygınlaştırılması, toplumda kadına biçilen ev işleri, çocuk ve yaşlı bakımı gibi roller konusundaki kültürel önyargıları azaltacak eğitimlerin sağlanması gibi önlemler de Türkiye'de kadın işgücüne katılımını artırabilecektir.
