The Location Choice of Urban Nightlife Activities and Their Impact on City Centers: the Case of Denizli City

Abstract

Kentlerin ve merkezi alanların gelişimini yönlendiren çeşitli faktörler, zaman içinde kent merkezlerinin işlevlerinin ve kullanımlarının da değişimine neden olmuştur. Bu değişimde, eğlence mekanları ve gece zamanı da belirleyici bir rol oynamaktadır. Bu bağlamda tezin amacı, 'Kentsel gece hayatının gelişmesi ve kullanımının yoğunlaşmasının konut mahallesi üzerindeki etkilerini eğlence mekanları ve gece hayatı kavramları üzerinden ortaya koymaktır. Bu doğrultuda çalışmada bir örnek saha araştırması yapılmıştır. Örnek saha araştırması olarak kentsel merkezi yayılmanın net olarak gözlenebildiği Denizli kenti seçilmiştir. Araştırmanın temel savı, gece aktivitelerine ev sahipliği yapılan alanlarda kentsel merkezi gelişmenin ve değişmenin başlayacağıdır. Bu doğrultuda tez, şu araştırma sorusu etrafında şekillenmiştir: 'Kentsel gece hayatının gelişmesi ve kullanımının yoğunlaşmasının konut mahallesi üzerindeki etkileri nelerdir?' Araştırma amaçları doğrultusunda çalışma işletmeci tercihleri ve alan sakinlerinin tutumları üzerinden iki yönlü bir ele alış benimsemiştir. Bu doğrultuda, kent merkezlerinin dinamik yapısı içerisinde kentsel gece kullanımlarının önemli bir parçası olan eğlence mekanlarının kentin hangi bölgelerini tercih ettiği ve bu tercihlerin nedenleri araştırılırken kentsel merkezi işlevlerin konut alanlarının içine doğru yayılmasının ve bu alanlarda canlı bir gece hayatının varlığının mahalle sakinleri üzerindeki etkisi değerlendirilmiştir. Ampirik çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre, 'merkezi konum', 'kullanıcı talebi', 'erişilebilirlik' ve 'güvenlik' etkenlerinin eğlence mekanlarının yer seçiminde öncelikli faktörler olduğu bulunmuş ve eğlence mekanı sahiplerinin bulundukları bölgeden duydukları memnuniyet düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu merkezi işlevlerin konut alanlarının içine doğru yayılması ve bu alanlarda canlı bir gece hayatının varlığıyla genç yetişkinler ve yaşlı nüfus arasında memnuniyet düzeylerinde farklılıklar görülürken gençlerin özellikle gece hayatının gelişimine yönelik yüksek beklentileri olduğu ve yeni faaliyetlere daha açık oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra, uzun süreli ikametin, mahalledeki çeşitli değişikliklere daha olumlu bir tutum sergileme eğiliminde olduğu ve ekonomik faktörlere karşı daha duyarlı bir algı oluşturduğu görülmüştür. Eğlence mekanlarına yakın yaşayan ve sosyal faaliyetlere daha aktif katılan hanehalklarının genel memnuniyet düzeylerinin daha yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. Öte yandan, gece hayatı aktivitelerinin gelişimiyle gürültü kirliliği, açık ve yeşil alanların azalması, trafik sıkışıklığı ve yetersiz otopark alanları gibi endişeler ortaya çıkmıştır.

The development of cities and central areas has been influenced by various factors, leading to changes in the functions and uses of urban centers over time. In this transformation, entertainment venues and nighttime activities play a decisive role. In this context, the aim of the thesis is to explore the effects of the development and intensification of urban nightlife on residential neighborhoods through the concepts of entertainment venues and nightlife. In line with this objective, a case study was conducted, with Denizli city being chosen as an example where the spread of urban centrality can be clearly observed. The fundamental proposition of the research is that urban development and change will commence in areas hosting nighttime activities. Accordingly, the thesis is shaped around the following research question: 'What are the effects of the development and intensification of urban nightlife on residential neighborhoods?' Aligned with the research objectives, the study adopts a two-pronged approach through the preferences of business operators and the attitudes of area residents. Consequently, within the dynamic structure of urban centers, the research investigates which regions of the city entertainment venues prefer and evaluates the impact of the spread of urban central functions into residential areas and the presence of vibrant nightlife in these areas on neighborhood residents According to the results of the empirical study, factors such as 'central location,' 'user demand,' 'accessibility,' and 'security' were identified as prioritized factors in the selection of locations for entertainment venues. It was found that the satisfaction levels of entertainment venue owners were high in their respective regions. Disparities in satisfaction levels were observed between young adults and the elderly regarding the spread of central functions into residential areas and the presence of vibrant nightlife. Young people, in particular, expressed high expectations for the development of nightlife and were more open to new activities. Additionally, long-term residency tended to result in a more positive attitude towards various changes in the neighborhood and created a more sensitive perception towards economic factors. Households living close to entertainment venues and actively participating in social activities exhibited higher overall satisfaction levels. However, concerns such as noise pollution, decreased open and green spaces, traffic congestion, and insufficient parking areas emerged with the development of nightlife activities.
