"A Review based on OLED Lighting Conditions and Human Circadian System", Cultura e Scienza del Colore, Vol.15, No.1, pp.7-12.A Review based on OLED Lighting Conditions and Human Circadian System(2023) Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Akbay, Saadet; 237970; 21742Light is a form of energy that affects the human sleep cycle, working hours, alertness, productivity, and well-being. As one of the essential environmental factors, lighting requires extensive research to understand the human-environment interaction. Earlier studies reveal that various artificial lighting technologies are utilized to investigate the human circadian system; experiments employing solid-state lighting (SSL) sources are still being conducted to determine how the human circadian system is affected. Due to the advantages of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) lighting, there is a need to enhance this form of artificial lighting in an indoor environment. This paper focuses on a literature review on artificial lighting sources, particularly OLED lighting, used from the past to the present. This article also discusses how OLED lighting can influence the human circadian system in terms of different characteristics of lighting in an indoor environment. © 2023, Gruppo del Colore? "Analyzing Natural Lighting Conditions from the Perspective of Biophilic Design in Indoor Office Environments", IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, IOP, pp. 1-10, 2022.Analyzing Natural Lighting Conditions from the Perspective of Biophilic Design in Indoor Office Environments(IOP, 2022) Doğan Karaman, Gülşah; Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; 319194; 237970The term "biophilic design" is recognized by some designers who coined a word for designing instinctively using fresh understandings, reasons, and views, which helps reconnect us with the natural world in the indoor environment. Within the various patterns that connect humans with nature, natural lighting provides an orientation to the day and night according to the sun's location and cycles, which is essential for human health and wellness. The supply and quality of natural lighting, including its influence on mood, have been extensively investigated and written about for many years in various locations and the overlapping science and design disciplines. This paper analyzes the biophilic design approach to mood for the natural lighting conditions that change according to the position of the office environments in winter. The selected two indoor office environments were located in the Faculty of Architecture at Çankaya University on Main Campus, on the second floor of the building. Office-1 overlooked the design studio, preventing it from taking natural lighting directly, and Office-2 directly penetrated the natural lighting. Natural lighting-based photos were taken from the selected offices during three periods of the day. The photos and a survey were directed at the two groups: Group 1 consisted of the students who took the Natural and Artificial Lighting Course, and Group 2 students who did not take this course. The experimental instruments analyzed their moods to evaluate natural lighting conditions.Article Citation Count: Avcı, Ayşe Nihan (2023). "ASSESSMENT OF DAYLIGHTING IN A HISTORICAL EDUCATIONAL BUILDING: ANKARA UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SCIENCE ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY LABORATORY", Light and Engineering, Vol. 31, No. 6, pp. 70-77.ASSESSMENT OF DAYLIGHTING IN A HISTORICAL EDUCATIONAL BUILDING: ANKARA UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SCIENCE ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY LABORATORY(2023) Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; 237970The conditions of Ottoman architecture persisted during the republican period at the turn of the 20th century. Later, radical changes in the structure of the state affected the field of architecture, and changes in the world were reflected in our country. The structures that are the subject of architectural debates are typically early republican period buildings, which were built between 1920s and 1950s. On the other hand, in past buildings, the interior design criteria that are important for the user in interior design have been the subject of interest in various disciplines. Lighting – daylighting and electric lighting – in different interiors is one of the design criteria that has intrigued many researchers. Laboratories, classrooms, studios, circulation areas, administrative spaces, offices, conference rooms, and wet spaces are all common features of educational buildings. Each of these spaces has unique lighting requirements. The aim of this study is to assess the daylighting performance in the interior and encourage similar studies in historical educational buildings rather than the architectural design of these buildings. Daylighting performance was assessed in the analytical chemistry laboratory at the Ankara University Faculty of Science, block A, which was built during the Second National Architectural Movement and bears the traces of Sedad Hakki Eldem, Emin Onat, and Paul Bonatz. A morning interval (10:00–11:00) where the courses are considered the most productive was chosen for the evaluation. The results were compared and interpreted with the values specified in the standards; the measurement is limited to the day and time interval.Conference Object Citation Count: Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Memikoğlu, İpek (2016). "Color Perception in Correlated Color Temperature of Led Lighting", GRID - Mimarlık, Planlama ve Tasarım Dergisi, Vol. 1, No. 1, pp. 139-162.Color Perception in Correlated Color Temperature of Led Lighting(2018) Akbay, Saadet; Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; 21742; 237970Color and light are inseparable entities that are the essential design factors in the field of interior architecture. When the light changes, the perceived color appearance of a surface within an interior environment also changes. The change in color perception is not only related to the type of a light source or the intensity of illumination, but also to the correlated color temperature (CCT) of a light source. The aim of this study is to understand how different CCTs of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting influence the color perception. A study is conducted to compare the perceptive color tendencies for inherent colors under two different CCTs of LED lighting, i.e. warm (2700º K) and cool (4000º K). In the study, Natural Color System (NCS) is utilized as a color notation system to reveal the possible tendencies and patterns concerning the relationship between the inherent and perceived colors. The general tendencies for the perceived colors revealed similar patterns in the nuance (i.e. blackness and chromaticness) color area for each inherent color and showed dispersion on the hue color area under the CCTs of both 2700º K and 4000º K LED lighting.Article Citation Count: Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Memikoğlu, İpek (2017). "Effects of LED Lighting on Visual Comfort with Respect to the Reading Task", International Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering (IJECE), Vol. 11, No. 8, pp. 930-934.Effects of LED Lighting on Visual Comfort with Respect to the Reading Task(2017) Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Memikoğlu, İpek; 237970Lighting systems in interior architecture need to be designed according to the function of the space, the type of task within the space, user comfort and needs. Desired and comfortable lighting levels increase task efficiency. When natural lighting is inadequate in a space, artificial lighting is additionally used to support the level of light. With the technological developments, the characteristics of light are being researched comprehensively and several business segments have focused on its qualitative and quantitative characteristics. These studies have increased awareness and usage of artificial lighting systems and researchers have investigated the effects of lighting on physical and psychological aspects of human in various ways. The aim of this study is to research the effects of illuminance levels of LED lighting on user visual comfort. Eighty participants from the Department of Interior Architecture of Çankaya University participated in three lighting scenarios consisting of 200 lux, 500 lux and 800 lux that are created with LED lighting. Each lighting scenario is evaluated according to six visual comfort criteria in which a reading task is performed. The results of the study indicated that LED lighting with three different illuminance levels affect visual comfort in different ways. The results are limited to the participants and questions that are attended and used in this study.Article Citation Count: Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Memikoğlu, İpek, "Bir Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi Yapısında Doğal Aydınlatmaya Dair İç Mekan Aydınlık Düzeylerinin İncelenmesi: Ankara Refik Saydam Hıfzıssıhha Enstitüsü Kimyahane ve Bakteriyoloji Binası Laboratuvarları Örneği", Ankara Araştırmaları Dergisi, Vol. 5, No. 1, pp. 123-130, (2017).Bir Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi Yapısında Doğal Aydınlatmaya Dair İç Mekan Aydınlık Düzeylerinin İncelenmesi: Ankara Refik Saydam Hıfzıssıhha Enstitüsü Kimyahane ve Bakteriyoloji Binası Laboratuvarları Örneği(2017) Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Memikoğlu, İpek; 237970; 19105Geçmişten günümüze estetik, fonksiyon, sürdürülebilirlik, kullanıcı-mekân ilişkisi gibi konulardaki değişimlere tanıklık eden Ankara, dinamik yapısıyla kendinden söz ettirmiş ve çeşitli tartışmalara konu olmuştur. "Evaluating effectiveness of led and oled lights on user visual comfort and reading performance", A/Z ITU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture, Vol. 18, No. 2, pp. 397-411.Evaluating effectiveness of led and oled lights on user visual comfort and reading performance(2021) Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Memikoğlu, İpek; 237970In interior architecture, one of the main purposes of light is to create comfortable and functional spaces according to user needs. Light provides individuals to understand, get information for visual tasks and it affects how they experience and behave in the environment. Desired illuminance levels are required for visual comfort and task efficiency. This study analyzes the effects of different illuminance levels of light emitting diode (LED) and organic light emitting diodie (OLED) lights on user visual comfort and reading performance. An experiment was con-ducted with eighty interior architecture students at Çankaya University. Six lighting scenarios were created with LED and OLED lighting sources that assessed six visual comfort criteria. The experimental setting consisted of three different illuminance levels, as 200, 500 and 800 lx. The results revealed that different illuminance levels were found more comfortable for different visual comfort criteria, but the illuminance level of 500 lx was visually more comfortable than the other illuminance levels. The illuminance level of LED 200 lx was visually more comfortable than LED 800 lx. OLED light was found visually more comfortable than LED light. In addition, participants read slower under the illuminance level of LED 200 lx. It was concluded that illuminance levels of light effect user’s visual comfort and reading performance. This study provides a basis to recommend the preferred illuminance level for LED and OLED light during a reading performance. © 2021, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture. "Visual comfort assessment of OLED lighting in an indoor office environment", Visual comfort assessment of OLED lighting in an indoor office environment, Vol.5, No.2, pp.129-413.Visual comfort assessment of OLED lighting in an indoor office environment(2022) Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Akbay, Saadet; 237970; 21742Visual comfort is one of the significant criteria influencing good-quality lighting in an indoor environment. There are various technologies for delivering illumination in indoor installations; three important milestones are incandescent, fluorescent, and LED lighting. Alternative technologies, such as OLED (organic light-emitting diode) lighting, cannot be disregarded by a thorough examination. Few studies have investigated the influence of OLED lighting on visual comfort in terms of merely illuminance level. To this end, this study investigates the influence of OLED lighting conditions on visual comfort, including general comfort parameters—overall comfort, illuminance, brightness ratio, veiling reflections, colour, flicker effect, overall satisfaction—in an indoor office environment. Twelve members from the Faculty of Architecture, Çankaya University, voluntarily participated in the study. A full-scale indoor office environment was designed for the test environment, which was illuminated by OLED lighting (2900 K). An Office Lighting Survey was adopted to assess the general visual comfort of OLED lighting conditions in an indoor office environment. In contrast to earlier lighting studies, this study did not measure any task performance under the lighting condition. Instead, it focused solely on participants’ visual comfort evaluations when exposed to OLED lighting during their everyday routines in an indoor office environment. This study is a preliminary study for further investigations on the doctoral thesis.
