Çankaya ÜniversitesiThis study presents the indoor soundscape framework in detail by describing the variables and factors that form an indoor soundscape study. The main objective is to introduce a new indoor soundscaping framework and systematically explain the variables that contribute to the overall evaluation of an indoor soundscape. Hence, the dependencies of physical and psychoacoustical factors of the sound environment and the spatial factors of the built entity are statistically tested. The new indoor soundscaping framework leads to an overarching evaluation perspective of enclosed sound environments, combining objective room acoustics research and noise control engineering with architectural analysis. Therefore, it is hypothesised that case spaces with certain plan organisations, volumetric relations, and spatial referencing lead to differentiated sound pressure level (SPL) and loudness (N) values. SPL and N parametric variances of the sound environments are discussed through the statistical findings with respect to the architectural characteristics of each library case space. The results show that the relation between crowd level variances and sound environment parametric values is statistically significant. A single-family masonry house in Turkey, situated in an earthquake prone area and built in the early 20(th) century, is studied. The analysis is made based on Turkish regulations for the initial building and for the building after alterations. Çankaya Üniversitesi; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 05.02. MimarlıkStick aluminium curtain wall (SACW) systems are common curtain wall systems in Turkey. These sytems offer many advantages including architectural variation, modular design, ease of production and assembly. Beside their architectural properties SACW systems create significant load effects on structural systems. These load effects include lateral loads such as seismic and wind loads as well as static vertical loads. This load transfer is not one way. The vertical and lateral displacements of building structures also act on curtain walls. Healthy load transfer between the SACW and the building depends on architectural decisions during the design and construction process. Due to their wide use SACW systems are prone to architectural mistakes. These mistakes often represent themselves at latter stages of the construction and require solutions which will affect the architectural characteristics and structural behavior of buildings. This study focuses on SACW design and construction processes to find the effects of architectural decisions on curtain wall behavior. Case studies that include architectural design mistakes are selected to classify and study the reasons and the solutions of these mistakes. Çankaya ÜniversitesiAlthough the architectural design process is carried out with the collaboration of experts who are experienced in many different areas from the main preferences to the detailing stage, the major decisions such as plan organization, mass design etc. are taken by the architect. Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs are generally effective after the major decisions of the design are taken. For this reason, it is common for the main decisions, taken during the design process, to be changed during the analysis of the structural system. In order to prevent this, in the early stages of architectural design, earthquake system awareness and structural system design should be included as an design input; as, the failure of the structural system which did not considered well in the architectural design phase leads to unexpected revisions in the implementation project phase and thus leads to serious losses in both time and cost. The aim of this study is to create an Irregularity Control Assistant (IC Assitant) that can provide architects general information about the appropriateness of structural system decisions to earthquake regulations in the early stages of design process by using the deep learning and image processing methods. Later, radical changes in the structure of the state affected the field of architecture, and changes in the world were reflected in our country. The structures that are the subject of architectural debates are typically early republican period buildings, which were built between 1920s and 1950s. On the other hand, in past buildings, the interior de-sign criteria that are important for the user in interior design have been the subject of interest in various disciplines. Lighting - daylighting and electric lighting - in different interiors is one of the design criteria that has intrigued many researchers. Laboratories, classrooms, studios, circulation areas, administrative spaces, offices, conference rooms, and wet spaces are all common features of educational buildings. Each of these spaces has unique lighting requirements. The aim of this study is to assess the daylighting performance in the interior and encourage similar studies in historical educational buildings rather than the architectural design of these buildings. Daylighting performance was assessed in the analytical chemistry laboratory at the Ankara University Faculty of Science, block A, which was built during the Second National Architectural Movement and bears the traces of Sedad Hakki El-dem, Emin Onat, and Paul Bonatz. A morning interval (10:00-11:00) where the courses are considered the most productive was chosen for the evaluation. The results were compared and interpreted with the values specified in the standards; the measurement is limited to the day and time interval. İç MimarlıkPurpose - This paper aims to compare designers' cognitive behaviors in geometry-based modeling environments (GMEs) and parametric design environments (PDEs). Design/methodology/approach - This study used Rhinoceros as the geometric and Grasshopper as the parametric design tool in an experimental setting. Designers' cognitive behaviors were investigated by using the retrospective protocol analysis method with a content-oriented approach. Findings - The results indicated that the participants performed more cognitive actions per minute in the PDE because of the extra algorithmic space that such environments include. On the other hand, the students viewed their designs more and focused more on product user relation in the geometric modeling environment. While the students followed a top-down process and produced less number of topologically different design alternatives with the parametric design tool, they had more goal setting activities and higher number of alternative designs in the geometric modeling environment. In this study, an evaluation has been made over the reverberation time for the speech action of the existing Iraq-Najaf Islamic University Alawiya Conference Hall. Within the scope of the study, the control of the reverberation time affecting the subjective and objective room acoustics parameters has been examined, the relationship between the reverberation time and the surface absorptions of the room have been examined. Reverberation time on existing situation was determined by making in situ measurements. In order to control the reverberation time of the existing hall, the materials selected according to the sound absorption coefficients have been positioned differently and alternative models have been developed. The reverberation times of the alternative models were determined using the ECOTECT v.5.20 computer simulation program used for acoustic analysis, and their geometric acoustics analysis was performed using the ray tracing method. By comparing the models, the surface absorptions have been analyzed to obtain the appropriate reverberation time in room for speech action. As a result of the study, the effects of the use of walls, ceiling and floor finishing materials and surface absorptions on the reverberation time have been evaluated within the scope of improvement for speech action in the halls with square plan, flat floor and high ceiling (min 6 m).Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 6Empirical Investigation of Owner-occupiers' Reinvestments in Housing: the Case of Ankara, Turkey(Springer, 2014) Ozdemir Sari, Ozgul Burcu; 29102; 05.03. There are no policies to consider reinvestment processes, and the body of knowledge on households' reinvestment decisions is scant. Understanding how individual reinvestment decisions are determined is vital to devise policy measures to improve the condition of the existing housing stock and neighbourhoods. In this study, an attempt is made to identify the basic motivations and factors underpinning the owner-occupants' performed and planned reinvestments in the apartment flats of Ankara. The results display that consumption considerations, particularly circumstances of necessity and urgency, are the basic motivation for undertaking reinvestment works among the surveyed owner-occupants. Higher household head age, shorter duration of occupancy, higher house value and maintained installations and infrastructure in common parts of the apartment blocks are displayed to increase the probability of having undertaken reinvestment works. Also, perception of the dwelling to be in disrepair and landscaped common outdoor space of the apartment are identified to increase the probability of having reinvestment plans for the future. Çankaya ÜniversitesiAlthough research on restorative environments suggest that natural settings have therapeutic effects in moderating stress and promoting positive experiences, there is a limited body of literature inquiring about the therapeutic potential of interior environments. The aim of the current study was to understand the restorative potential of home environments regarding theoretical background on restorative environments and architectural dimensions influencing well-being through the experiences of women. We interviewed 11 adult women using the photo-elicitation technique to investigate the perceived restorativeness of their home environments. Thematic analysis of qualitative data indicated that the design attributes of spaces play a significant role in promoting the restoration process. In addition to design attributes, we found family interaction, socialising, and engaging in activities could also be influential. Furthermore, the exploratory nature of the research highlighted the significance of individual meanings and personal factors in shaping the perceived restorativeness of home environments. Design/methodology/approach - First, the authors reviewed the literature on place attachment and residential satisfaction, and then generated a questionnaire based on the scales from the literature. The authors surveyed 135 respondents in two neighborhoods of Ankara, a metropolitan city in Turkey: one in the city center, the other in a suburb. To analyze the data, first, factor analysis. and later, multivariate analysis of variance and correlation tests were conducted. Findings - The results indicated that place attachment and residential satisfaction were positively correlated, in congruence with the related literature; however, neighborhood location appeared to be associated only with residential satisfaction. The theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed with respect to the recent issues on housing. Originality/value - The effects of neighborhood location on place attachment and residential satisfaction (by comparing two different residential areas of the city) have not been adequately examined in earlier studies. The study results provide an understanding of the effectiveness of residential location on improving place attachment and residential satisfaction and contribute to the existing literature Although the study findings may not be generalized to other locations in Turkey, this study contributed to the previous studies on place attachment and residential satisfaction by providing data from Turkish residents, which is less often examined.Article A Research on Comparison of Elevator Traffic Analysis Methods in Educational Buildings(Gazi Univ, Fac Engineering Architecture, 2023) Harputlugil, Timucin; Deligoez, Dostcan; 40295; 05.02. Çankaya ÜniversitesiPurpose: Regarding elevator design in educational buildings; It is aimed to investigate the legal framework, to integrate dynamic simulation programs to design process, to compare traditional and dynamic simulation methods, to evaluate the adequacy of elevator features specified in the legislation and to determine the optimum scenarios according to the minimum requirements.Theory and Methods: Based on the findings of the literature review, which examines the issue of elevator traffic analysis together with the legislation and regulations, the carrying capacities of the elevators in the educational buildings designed by the Ministry of National Education (MNE) are tested. The stability of the system is tested by analyzing the conditions where only the disabled, disabled and building workers can be used together and all building users can use the elevators with the dynamic simulation method (with Elevate Software). The limits of the system are determined based on the waiting times during the peak usage periods. The findings of the study are evaluated according to the waiting times determined by CIBSE Guide D and the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers followed by the discussion of the outcomes.Results: The issue of elevator design has been overlooked in educational buildings, and a comprehensive elevator traffic analysis method has not been defined. For the effective use of all occupants, elevator design should be handled comprehensively with considering potentials of dynamic simulation method.Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, it is noted that the number and capacity of elevators in the legislation for educational buildings are determined only for minimum conditions and for disabled users. In addition, the legislation (considering calculation methodology) is not specific for educational buildings but related with buildings in general with public use. Çankaya ÜniversitesiOccupants make a passive contribution to the building energy balance by their very presence; they also can have an active role through activities like opening windows, changing thermostat set points, tuning radiator switches or lighting switches, etc. Furthermore, in existing buildings, occupants also play a role in decisions regarding any interventions in the fabric and systems, especially where occupants own the building. In this paper, an evaluation of the survey results applied to occupants of dwellings in order to reveal effects of occupant behavior on energy consumption. The survey was applied to occupants of dwellings presented in four different climatic zones. There are two main issues aimed in the survey. Firstly, it is aimed to find out behavior patterns which are mostly effective on energy consumption. The other aim is to query the perception of occupants on comfort conditions and energy saving potential. The results of the survey showed that dominant occupant behavior which have an effect on energy consumption very significantly is opening/closing window. A major amount of occupant is aware of saving electricity; thus %92.9 of occupants prefer energy saving lamps for artificial lighting. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThis work presents a semiotic perspective of aspects of a soundscape evaluation of the city, Supino located in the Province of Frosinone in the Italian region of Lazio. The data and sound sample collection was accomplished through the soundwalk technique undertaken by students of Cankaya University, School of Architecture during the 'Third International Summer School in Supino' 17-24 August 2014. For the soundscape evaluation, three zones were identified in Supino as urban, suburban, and intersection. A total of nine samples across three zones were collected during three different times in a day by soundwalks from the areas located in the identified zones. A theoretical model of semiotic interpretations of soundscapes has been proposed and applied for the analysis of Supino's soundscape. The results showed that the soundscape of Supino differs according to its cultural, habitual, and anthropological tendencies. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiBologna Process studies in Cankaya University's Interior Architecture Department (INAR), Turkey have been initiated in 2008. The goal of this study is to explore students' perceptions about the new programme outcomes framed with the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework and to provide a set of guidelines for the Bologna Process to be implemented. A questionnaire including semi-structured questions is conducted in the data collection process. Content analysis method is used in order to examine students' perceptual outcomes. The findings of the study display that students' perceptions underline the importance of the acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences in social, economic and managerial dimensions of the professional life. Results also reveal the need of students for the acquisition and use of communicative, collaborative and interdisciplinary aspects of the profession and their expectations on both theoretical and practical contents of INAR courses. Çankaya ÜniversitesiHosting the world's largest Syrian refugee population, Turkey has not introduced a housing policy to address permanently the housing needs of Syrian urban refugees. The aim of this exploratory study, focusing on a case study in a Syrian ethnic enclave in Ankara, was to provide insights into Syrians' housing conditions and needs while further seeking to establish from their perspectives the determinants of their residential satisfaction (RS). Face-to-face in-depth interviews with 38 Syrian refugees uncovered perceptions and experiences of the resident, dwelling and neighborhood components of RS. The content analysis revealed perceptual attributes of RS, while descriptive statistics displayed the frequencies of citation and the mean RS scores. The study found that Syrians were able to sustain cultural values, identity and social relations through a combination of their own self-settlement strategies and certain neighborhood characteristics, including access to labor and housing markets, aid/subsidies and mosques, low cost of living, the existence of co-ethnics, solidarity networks and peaceful relations with natives, and living in an ethnic enclave. This resulted in RS, which was positively influenced by adaptations made inside/outside the dwelling, detached houses with yards providing privacy, additional housework and socialization space, and large, comfortable, newly-built flats. Conversely, dissatisfaction resulted from the high percentage of rent in the family budget, the existence of unofficial realtors, security problems including the decrease in police services following the departure of Turkish residents, deterioration in dwellings, and the risk of demolitions in the neighborhood's renewal process. Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiArchitectural design is an interdisciplinary process which involves multiple stages that are interconnected. In this process, it is common for major decisions to be changed during the final stage, the analysis of the structural system. After making substantial corrections, the architect has to revisit the early stages, the preliminary project. This back-and-forth process can result in significant losses in time and cost. The proposed Irregularity Control Assistant (IC-Assistant) aims to provide architects with feedback on the conformity of structural system decisions to the irregularities defined in the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC-2018), using image processing methods at the early stages of the design process. The IC-Assistant was preliminarily created to evaluate the torsional irregularity of plan organization using deep learning methods. In this study, the results of the IC-Assistant were verified by structural analysis with the Prota-Structure program. The novelty of this study is the use of the image-classification method in earthquake-resistant architectural design. Up to this point, the method has been mainly used in facial recognition systems. This method minimizes time, human error, and cost losses and includes awareness of load bearing and earthquake resistance as inputs in the early stages of architectural design.
