Article A Discrete Element Method for Evaluating the Seismic Performance of Concrete Gravity Dam-Reservoir Systems Under Main Shock-Aftershock Events(Tulpar Academic Publishing, 2025) Soysal, B.F.Dams are crucial for water supply, flood prevention, and hydroelectric power generation. Often located in seismically active regions, they are vulnerable to main shock-aftershock (MS-AS) sequences, which can compromise structural integrity and hydraulic safety. Critical aspects of dam response to MS–AS events remain unclear, particularly the required rest time between successive events and threshold AS-to-MS intensity measure ratios that could serve as predictors of additional damage. This study addresses these gaps by analyzing concrete gravity dam–reservoir systems of three heights (50 m, 100 m, and 150 m) using the developed discrete element–based approach coupled with displacement/pressure-based mixed finite elements for the reservoir. Empirical rest time equations were derived from 124 as-recorded ground motions, while seismic performance under varying intensity levels was evaluated using 14 as-recorded MS–AS sequences. Damage was quantified using discrete indices of base crack length, maximum base crack width, and maximum total upstream crack width. Results indicate that AS primarily propagate existing cracks at lower intensities, whereas higher intensities generate new cracks along the upstream face, increasing crack widths by 25–30% on average. The 50 m high dam remained within the mild damage category, while taller dams occasionally reached moderate levels, posing potential seepage risks. Threshold AS-to-MS ratios for four different intensity measures were identified. These findings provide mechanistic insight into crack propagation under MS-AS events, providing practical guidance for post-earthquake dam safety assessment, inspection prioritization, and incorporating sequential seismic effects into design and emergency planning. © 2025 by the Author.Article Integrating the Seljuk Cultural Layer Into Contemporary Life: The Case of Niğde Historic City Center(Istanbul Univ, Research Inst Turkology, Dept Art History, 2025) Yavaşcan, Emel Efe; Urak, Zehra GedizGünümüz tarihî kent merkezleri, yer altı ve yer üstündeki tarihî izleriyle, kültürel zenginlikleri ve özgün kimlikle8 rinin yanı sıra, “yerin ruhu”nu yansıtan kentsel hafıza alanlarıdır. In the design, firstly a LED array is determined and a proper driver circuit that can provide the required optical power is designed, and the working lamp developed is tested under various conditions. The luminous output values of the designed LED working lamp are compared with those of a commercial working lamp, which uses a halogen bulb. It is evaluated that in automotive applications lamps using LEDs could be successfully utilized depending on the optical efficacy of the LED used, the designs of the LED driver and the reflector.Article Statistical Models for Porous Asphalt Mixtures Containing Pulverized Surface Dressed Pavement Material/Low-density Polyethylene Waste(MIM RESEARCH GROUP, 2025) Oner, Julide; Almusawı, Alı; Abdulrahman, Hassan Shuaibu; Ahmed, Nasiru IbrahimPorous asphalt (PA) mixtures typically contain a high proportion of coarse aggregates with minimal fine aggregates, along with a binder that creates ample space for water drainage. Since road construction consumes large quantities of aggregates, recycling and reusing materials have become common practices. This study focuses on developing PA by partially replacing traditional aggregates with pulverized surface-dressed pavement material (PSM) and modifying bitumen with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The mixtures were produced using 60/70 penetration grade bitumen modified with 2%, 4%, and 6% LDPE waste and 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% PSM. Adding LDPE waste to the bitumen altered key properties, such as the softening point, penetration, flashpoint, and ductility, resulting in a stiffer binder. Replacing aggregates with PSM reduced both stability and flow, leading to a lower Marshall quotient. Flow values for all trial mixes did not meet AAPA (2004) standards, while stability values slightly decreased as LDPE content increased from 2% to 6%. Despite this, all samples met the AAPA (2004) stability standard. The sample containing 2% LDPE and no PSM exhibited the highest Marshall quotient. Linear regression models were developed from experimental data to highlight the relationships between the measured responses and the variables. These polynomial equations demonstrated a strong correlation, indicated by high coefficients of determination. The study introduces an innovative approach by incorporating PSM and LDPE, largely unexplored in PA production, especially in Nigeria. The major societal benefits include reducing environmental pollution through plastic waste reuse, conserving natural aggregates, and promoting cost-effective construction practices. By advancing the use of recycled materials, this research supports sustainable infrastructure development while maintaining compliance with industry standards. © 2025 MIM Research Group. One of the key benefits of the conformable derivative is its ability to approximate the tangent at points where the classical tangent is not readily available. By employing conformable derivatives, alternative tangents can be created to overcome this limitation. Thanks to these alternative (conformable) tangents, physical interpretation can be made with alternative velocity vectors. Furthermore, the conformable derivative proves to be valuable in situations where the tangent plane cannot be defined. It enables the creation of alternative tangent planes, offering a solution in cases where the traditional approach falls short. Geometrically speaking, the conformable derivative carries significant meaning. It provides insights into the local behavior of a function and its relationship with nearby points. By understanding the conformable derivative, we gain a deeper understanding of how a function evolves and changes within its domain. A several examples are presented in the article to better understand the article and visualize the concepts discussed. These examples are accompanied by visual representations generated using the Mathematica program, aiding in a clearer understanding of the proposed ideas. By combining theoretical explanations, practical examples, and visualizations, this article aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of the advantages and geometric and physical implications of the conformable derivative. © MSAEN.Article Citation - Scopus: 6Examining the Influence of Autonomous Vehicle Behaviors on Travel Times and Vehicle Arrivals: a Comparative Study Across Different Simulation Durations on the Kirkuk-Sulaymaniyah Highway(Society of Automotive Engineers Turkey, 2024) Albdairi, M.; Almusawi, A.This study delves into the effects of autonomous vehicle behaviors on travel times and vehicle arrivals along the Kirkuk-Sulaymaniyah Highway, employing simulations spanning 3600, 5400, and 7200 seconds. Across varied traffic volumes ranging from 350 to 950 vehicles and autonomous vehicle behaviors categorized as cautious, normal, aggressive, aggressive platoons, and a mix alongside human-driven vehicles, the research unveils significant findings. Results highlight substantial reductions in average travel times and heightened vehicle arrivals among autonomous vehicles, particularly those exhibiting aggressive behaviors, compared to their human-driven counterparts. Across all simulation scenarios, aggressive autonomous vehicles consistently demonstrate superior performance, showcasing potential efficiency gains through aggressive driving algorithms. Furthermore, with increasing traffic volume, the advantages of aggressive autonomous behaviors become more pronounced, suggesting their adaptability to congested conditions. However, safety implications and traffic flow dynamics warrant caution, especially in scenarios with high volumes and aggressive behaviors. These insights underscore the importance of further research and policy considerations to leverage the full potential of autonomous vehicles while ensuring safely and efficiency on highways. © 2024 Society of Automotive Engineers Turkey. His first-person narration is a journey into his memories presented according to their importance for him at different stages of his life (the narrated self) and shows the role of memory in shaping the present self (the narrating self). The narrator regulates his memories to conceive a coherent pattern in his autobiographical account which will also give meaning to his life and help construct a unified identity. However, he adopts a structure that has to rely on his remembering/forgetting, which problematizes the idea of constructing the self through unreliable memory. With this quality of the novel as an early example of the "fiction of memory," Golding's text is inventive and looks forward to contemporary narrative approaches to autobiographical writing. Free Fall has been widely studied as an existentialist novel due to the novelist's questioning the concepts of freedom to choose and fall through the protagonist's quest for self-knowledge. However, the aim of this study is to analyse Golding's work as autobiografiction and trauma narrative where the text presents an account of the protagonist's attempt for reconstructing the self through memories subject to his modifications and offers the therapeutic use of his self-narration.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Scattering of Plane-Waves by an Impedance Half-Plane at the Interface Between Isorefractive Media(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2018) Basdemir, Husnu DenizThe scattering of plane waves by an impedance half-plane located at the interface of two isorefractive media is investigated.
