    Predicting Seismic Damage on Concrete Gravity Dams: a Review

    The seismic assessment of concrete gravity dams is a problem of prediction of cracking and the corresponding consequences. With the widespread use of general-purpose finite element programs, the work in the field has shifted towards quantifying the behaviour in a framework for assessment. The nonlinear analysis and coupling with foundation-reservoir interaction, conversely, is still a challenging task. The modelling approach has significant effects on the analysis results and the assessment framework. The field remains an active area for research with many outstanding issues regarding damage quantification and assessment compared to any other major infrastructure component. A comprehensive overview of the seismic assessment of gravity dams is presented in this work with the goal to outline the issues in the field. Different models and modelling choices are compared in the context of damaged state assessment of gravity dams. The links between practical difficulties and theoretical issues are critically discussed. The aleatoric and epistemic uncertainties in the field, and their sources, are presented. Areas of future work are identified for improvement in seismic assessment as well as reducing and quantifying the uncertainties in the prediction of damaged states for concrete gravity dams.

    Crack Width - Seismic Intensity Relationships for Concrete Gravity Dams

    Seismic assessment of plain concrete structures like gravity dams is generally conducted based on cracking. The responses of two types of gravity dams, i.e. the conventional and roller compacted concrete (RCC), were investigated in this study using a discrete element tool coupled with special reservoir elements. Using incremental dynamic analysis, the relationship between the seismic intensity measures and crack widths on the U/S face of the monolith was obtained. The damage accumulation on conventional and RCC dams was different: The cumulative cracking on the upstream face of the monolith correlated well to a seismic intensity measure representing base shear.

    Bioglass-Polymer Composite Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Regeneration: a Review of Current Trends

    Biocompatible and bioactive composite scaffolds are essential in bone tissue regeneration because of their bioactivity and multilevel porous assemblies. There is a high demand for three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds to treat bone regeneration defects, trauma, and congenital skeletal abnormalities in the current scenario. The main objective of this review is to collect all the possible information concerning synthetic and natural polymer-Bioglass (BG)-based scaffold materials and systematically present them to summarize the importance and need for these materials. The importance of the bone tissue engineering field has been highlighted. Given the current challenges, a comprehensive description of materials fabrication and patterns in scaffold structures is required. This review also includes the most crucial aspect of this study: why are polymeric materials mixed with BG materials? Individually, both BG and polymeric materials lack specific essential characteristics to enhance the scope of these materials. However, preparing the composites of both ensures the researchers that composites of polymers and BG have improved properties that make them versatile materials for bone tissue engineering applications. This study deals with the individual drawbacks of the inorganic BGs, synthetic polymers, and the deficiencies of natural polymers. This study has also included a brief description of various scaffold fabricating techniques. Finally, this study revealed that by manufacturing and developing novel composite materials-scaffolds bearing the capability to repair, heal, and regenerate accidentally damaged or badly injured bones, many occasional problems can be solved in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, this review demonstrated that natural polymeric materials present many advantages over synthetic bone grafts. Yet, synthetic biomaterials have one additional attractive feature, as they have the flexibility to be designed according to the desired demands. These features make them the best choice for a wide range of bone tissue engineering projects for orthopedic surgeons.

    A Constraint Programming Approach To a Real-World Workforce Scheduling Problem for Multi-Manned Assembly Lines With Sequence-Dependent Setup Times

    For over five decades, researchers have presented various assembly line problems. Recently, assembly lines with multiple workers at each workstation have become very common in the literature. These lines are often found in the manufacturing of large vehicles, where workers at a workstation may perform their assigned tasks at the same time. Most research on multi-manned assembly lines focuses on balancing tasks and workers among workstations and scheduling tasks for workers. This study, however, concentrates on assigning tasks to workers already assigned to a specific workstation, rather than balancing the entire line. The problem was identified through an industrial case study at a large vehicle manufacturing company. The study presents two methods, one using mixed integer linear programming and the other using constraint programming, to minimise the number of workers required on a multi-manned assembly line with sequence-dependent setup times. The results of the computational experiments indicate that the constraint programming method performs better than the mixed integer linear programming method on several modified benchmark instances from the literature. The constraint programming model is also tested on the real-world scenario of our industrial case study and leads to significant improvements in the productivity of the workstations.

    Ranking Using Promethee When Weights and Thresholds Are Imprecise: a Data Envelopment Analysis Approach

    Multicriteria decision making (MCDM) provides tools for the decision makers (DM) to solve complex problems with multiple conflicting criteria. Scalarization of criteria values requires using weights for criteria. Determining weights creates controversy as they are influential on the final ranking and challenges the DM as they are hard to elicit. PROMETHEE method is widely used in MCDM for ranking the alternatives and appropriate in situations when there is limited information on the preference structure of the DM. The DM should provide exact values for parameters such as criteria weights and thresholds of preference functions. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used for measuring the relative efficiency of alternatives in a non-parametric way without requiring any weight input. In this study, we propose two novel PROMETHEE based ranking approaches that address the determination of weight and threshold values by using an approach inspired by DEA. The first approach can deal with imprecise specification of criteria weights, and the second approach can utilize both imprecise weights and thresholds. The proposed approaches provide the DM substantial flexibility on the required level of information on those parameters. An illustrative example and a real-life case study are presented to show the utility of the proposed approaches.

    Hegemonic Masculinity and Terrorism: the Case of the Pkk and Abdullah Ocalan

    Recent years have seen an increase in the study of the relationship between gender and terrorism. This article analyzes the relationship between hegemonic masculinity and terrorism through the case of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (Partiya Karkeren Kurdistan or PKK) and its leader Abdullah ocalan. Using the method of narrative analysis, the study first examines the concept of hegemonic masculinity. The study attempts to make sense of how the concept of hegemonic masculinity operates within the PKK. To achieve this goal, the study demonstrates the major functions of hegemonic masculinity within terrorist organisations. Accordingly, it is argued that the perspective of masculinity studies can be used to gain a better and highly instructive understanding of political violence and terrorism.

    A Novel Approach for Renovation of Current Social Housing Stock Based on Energy Consumption in Turkey: Significance of Occupant Behaviour

    The goal of this research is to attempt establishing occupant behaviour profiles and how that behaviour impacts energy consumption with regard to indoor comfort levels in the current social housing stock in Turkey. The data consists of a large statistical survey that included four housing complexes situated in different climate regions in Turkey. Another more detailed survey was given to occupants of housing blocks in Ankara. Apartments were also monitored during a one-week period in summer and again in winter. All collected data were evaluated by sensitivity analysis. The results showed that occupant presence at home and operating windows had the most profound effect on internal loads and comfort levels whole year. Additionally, the transparency level of curtains, impacts the indoor temperature during the winter time. The results were used to develop a web-based tool which is going to be a guide for renovation strategies of current housing stock.

    Cycle Cost Considerations in a Continuous Review Inventory Control Model

    In this study, the continuous review order-quantity-re-order point (Q, R) model is analysed with cycle cost considerations. First, we formulate the maximum cycle cost of a given (Q, R) policy using a distribution-free approach. Then, two approaches are introduced to minimize the maximum cycle cost: (i) adjusting R of a given (Q, R) policy and (ii) designing a new (Q, R) policy. Optimum inventory control decisions are characterized for each approach. A set of numerical studies is presented to compare the outcomes of both approaches to three long-term cost minimization approaches, namely the cost minimizing (Q, R) policy, the distribution-free minmax (Q, R) policy, and the distribution-free (Q, R) policy based on the maximum entropy principle. Our numerical results demonstrate the viability of the two approaches introduced and discuss implications of penalty costs and lead time demand's coefficient of variation. Later, we formulate a bi-objective model with the objectives of expected cost and maximum cycle cost minimizations and propose a bi-directional method to approximate the set of Pareto efficient solutions. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the algorithm and demonstrate the Pareto front.

    Effects of the Information Presentation Format on Project Control

    In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the information presentation format and project control. Furthermore, the effects of some system conditions, namely the number of projects to be controlled and the level of time pressure, on the quality of the project control decisions are analyzed. Information provided by Earned Value Analysis is used to monitor and control projects, and simulation is applied to replicate and model the uncertain project environments. Software is developed to generate random cost figures, to present the data in different visual forms and to collect users' responses. Having performed the experiments, the statistical significance of the results is tested.
