Çankaya ÜniversitesiConference Object A Comparative Structural, Architectural and Cost-Based Analysis of Seismic Design Principles Applied in Reinforced Concrete Residential Buildings in Turkey(Crc Press-taylor & Francis Group, 2010) Ozmen, C.; Özmen, Cengiz; 56939; Mimarlık; 05.02. Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThis study demonstrates that it is possible to design earthquake resistant reinforced concrete residential structures without significant compromises in the spatial quality and economic viability of the building. The study addresses architects, structural engineers and private entrepreneurs who are the important players in the Turkish construction industry. In structural analyses, a set of four parametric mathematical models are used to demonstrate the effects of increased column cross-sections and use of shear-walls on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete structures. Architectural analyses are carried-out through three case-studies selected from the earthquake affected city of Bolu in Turkey. Cost-based analyses demonstrated that it is possible to design earthquake resistant reinforced concrete residential buildings with a 4-6% increase in the building cost and an economically acceptable 10% decrease in profits.Article Citation - WoS: 4Effects of Occupant Behavior on the Energy Performance of Dwellings: a Sensitivity Analysis(Locke Science Publ Co inc, 2016) Harputlugil, Gülsu; Harputlugil, Gulsu Ulukavak; Bedir, Merve; 36110; Mimarlık; 05.02. Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThis paper focuses on the influence of occupant behavior on the energy performance of dwellings in the Dutch context. The aim of this study was to identify, how the energy performance of a dwelling is sensitive to the behavior of its occupants. To this end, the study's methodology adopted the Monte Carlo method of analysis, one of the most commonly used means of analyzing the approximate distribution of possible results on the basis of probabilistic inputs. Data related to occupant behavior were generated from a survey of 313 households in The Netherlands. The Dutch reference row house was used to test the behavioral patterns, and the test results were determined through simulation-based modeling. The key input parameters were presence, heating control patterns (thermostat and radiators), and ventilation control patterns (windows, grilles, and mechanical ventilation), while minimum indoor resultant temperature and heating energy demand served as the key output parameters. The results showed that both heating energy demand and minimum indoor resultant temperature were most sensitive to the thermostat setting and most robust in relation to the radiator setting.Article Osteoporotic Ceramic Figures as a New Approach To Art and Life(Ceramic Art, 2013) Berker, Olgu; Berker, Oglu Sumengen; Ortak Dersler Bölümü; 09.01. Halis; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiModern tall buildings go higher and higher with the advances in structural design and high strength materials. However, every advance in height comes with a new difficulty. Efficient structural systems, high strength materials, and increased height, result with decrease in building weight and damping, and increase in slenderness. On the other hand, as the height and slenderness increase, buildings suffer from increased flexibility, which has negative effects in wind loading. Flexible structures are affected by vibration under the action of wind which cause building motion, and plays an important role in the structural and architectural designs. Understandably, contemporary tall buildings are much more vulnerable to wind excitation than their predecessors. Hence, different design methods and modifications are possible in order to ensure the functional performance of flexible structures and control the wind induced motion of tall buildings. An extremely important and effective design approach among these methods is aerodynamic modifications in architecture. In this context, the authors classify these aerodynamic modifications in architecture for resisting the lateral loads. Wind safe tall building design begins with the architect, and the influence of the wind action must be taken into consideration from the very beginning of the architectural design process by considering building aerodynamics.Conference Object The Use of Multicriteria Decision Methods in Planning and Design(int inst informatics & Systemics, 2003) Elker, C; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiFields associated with design and physical planning are appropriate domains for the use of multicriteria decision methods. Various methods are compared and "weighted summation" technique is put forward as the most suitable method for the needs of design and planning. The case of city planning is used to illustrate the methodology. The phases of "design of alternatives", "determination of objectives and criteria" and "evaluation" are described with the help of examples. The paper concludes with principles and problems in the use of multicriteria decision methods; in design and planning.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 4Analysis of a Historic Masonry Building(Croatian Soc Civil Engineers-hsgi, 2011) Ozmen, Cengiz; Özmen, Cengiz; Akan, Asli Er; Akan, Aslı; Unay, Ali Ihsan; 56939; 4587; Mimarlık; 05.02. Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThe paper starts from the observation that historic masonry buildings are often modified and altered to make them fit for present day use. A single-family masonry house in Turkey, situated in an earthquake prone area and built in the early 20(th) century, is studied. The analysis is made based on Turkish regulations for the initial building and for the building after alterations. Introduction of a reinforced-concrete slab has greatly improved seismic resistance of the building.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Architect - Structural Engineer Collaboration in Sustainable Structural System Design(Gazi Univ, 2011) Ozmen, Cengiz; Özmen, Cengiz; Unay, Ali Ihsan; 56939; Mimarlık; 05.02. As a result, this paper also investigates ways in which the structural design education of architects and structural engineers can be redesigned to make their future professional collaboration more harmonious.Conference Object Conceptual Framework for a Decision-Making Model Based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (Ahp) To Select the Best Public Private Partnership (Ppp) Model for Airports(New Zealand Acad Applied Research Ltd, 2017) Mohammed, Ali Omar; Harputlugil, Timuçin; Harputlugil, Timucin; 40295; Mimarlık; 05.02. Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThe adoption of public-private partnerships (PPPs) as a strategy for infrastructure projects, such as airports, highways, bridges, water supplies, and telecommunication, has been implemented in developed and developing countries with a number of obstacles. Based on this stance, critical success factors (CSFs) of public-private partnership projects and the selection of appropriate PPP models are critical issues that need to be analyzed. A multidisciplinary review of the literature on the critical success factors of public-private partnerships projects reveals the lack of a comprehensive decision-making model for selecting an appropriate PPP model. This paper presents a conceptual framework for a decision-making model to select the best PPP model considering CSFs for developing countries. The model is expected to be used for infrastructure projects, mostly for airports. The decision-making model is structured on the Analytic Hierarchy Process and sensitivity analysis. The decisionmaking model is expected to be adopted as a tool and contribute to decision makers for selecting the best fit PPP model for airports in order to enhance projects successfully.Conference Object Re-Thinking of Energy Consumption Classification by the Patterns of Occupant Behaviour in Dwellings: a Conceptual Framework(Free University of Bozen Bolzano, 2015) Harputlugil, G.U.; Harputlugil, Timuçin; Harputlugil, T.; Harputlugil, Gülsu; 40295; 36110; Mimarlık; 05.02. Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThe aim of this paper is to present the conceptual framework of a TUBİTAK funded project titled "Developing a New Methodology to Improve Housing Quality in Turkey Based on Effects of Occupant Behavior on Energy and Comfort of the Dwellings". Although the objective of the project is the development of new methodologies and tools to be used for the definition of effects of behavior profiles of housing occupants on the energy consumption and usage of this knowledge for building new houses and renovation of existing buildings, here the first step of research has been executed. By defining sensitivity of occupant behavior on energy consumption, it is planned to classify different models of occupant behavior. With data provided, the aim is to develop an "occupant behavior labeling" which rates occupants instead of buildings. To provide the mentioned data, sensitivity analysis of existing occupant behavior will be analysed based on the Monte Carlo Methodology. This methodology is one of the most used methodologies to analyse accurate distribution of possible outputs relied on inputs based on probability. Inputs for this research are (1) number of occupants for each space (for weekdays and weekend) (2) behaviour for ventilation (Window open/closed and mechanical ventilation on/off) (3) control of heating systems (radiator on/off and/or thermostat degree). These data will be provided with survey and data logging of chosen a house occupant group. As a consequence of the research, the aim is not only to rate the behavior of housing occupants but also determine occupancy groups/labels. With this approach, based on occupant's behavior labeling, the aim is to realize fast and affective applications for renovation of existing buildings. Moreover, by evaluation/assessment of houses which will be designed in the future based on determined occupant profiles allow to produce high performance dwellings. © 2015 by Bozen-Bolzano University Press Free University of Bozen-Bolzano All rights reserved.Review Mimarlığın Maddiliği(Middle East Technical Univ, 2020) Çavdar, Rabia Çiğdem; Cavdar, Rabia Cigdem; 237969; Mimarlık; 05.02. Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiNatural ventilation using passive approaches can increase indoor air quality without the need for mechanical systems. In the paper, mechanical ventilation has been ignored due to the associated energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, the study focusses on natural ventilation that can be created with architectural solutions. Specifically, the indoor air quality of a typical office building in Ankara, Türkiye was determined based on measurements, a building occupant survey, and the natural ventilation conditions as well as design alternatives were analysed by modelling and simulating the building using Autodesk CFD. From the simulation results, it was understood that current form of windows were not found suitable for effective and sufficient natural ventilation. As a result, not only design strategies that will increase the natural ventilation potential are put forward, but also strategies for façade elements have been produced in means of wind catchers. © 2023 IBPSA.All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1A Simple Selection Method of PV Systems for University Campuses(Gazi Univ, 2023) Harputlugil, Gülsu Ulukavak; Bara, Marıam; 36110; 05.02. The developed method is demonstrated in the example of the typical case, where the recommended PV system was turned out to be at an Azmuth angle of 0 degrees, the PV technology was monocrystelline Silicon, the annual electrical energy yield per 100 m2 of PV modules surface area 22.4 MWH/Year, the specific electrical energy cost was 0.15 Euos/Kwh, as a first merit option, making a difference of around 13% of saving compared with the 10th last option. The work concludes that a viable PV application is feasible, encouraging its application in various campuses provided that comprehensive planning and careful considerations are given to the related aspects.Article Ulaşımda Yaptıklarımız Yap(A)madıklarımız: Büyük Kentlerimizin Yüz Yıllık Öyküsü(2022) Elker, Cüneyt; 5686; 05.02. Çankaya ÜniversitesiThe monumental rock-cut facades of the tenth to eleventh century-mansions - so-called courtyard complexes - in Cappadocia, central Turkey, are rare examples of secular Byzantine architecture. While these symmetrically designed facades adorned with superimposed arches differ from the simpler ones (both carved and built) in the region, they bear striking similarities to others from the broader Mediterranean basin. This article offers new insights into the discussion on the uniqueness of the rock-cut facades of courtyard complexes and reconsiders the raison d'etre of this 'false' monumentality in the rural setting of Byzantine Cappadocia.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 15Reflections on the Evidentiary Basis of Indoor Air Quality Standards(Mdpi, 2022) Mahdavi, Ardeshir; Azar, Elie; Bandurski, Karol; Bourikas, Leonidas; Harputlugil, Timucin; Schweiker, Marcel; Berger, Christiane; 40295; 05.02. Mimarlık; 05. Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Çankaya ÜniversitesiBuildings are expected to provide healthy and comfortable indoor environmental conditions for their users. Such conditions have diverse dimensions, including thermal, visual, air quality, auditory, and olfactory aspects. Indoor environmental quality standards, guidelines, and codes typically inform professionals in the building design and operation phase in view of procedural, contractual, and legal boundary conditions. Given this critical role of standards, it seems significant to examine the applicability and scientific validity on a regular basis. In this context, the present paper focuses on the standard-based definition of indoor air quality (IAQ) indicators and their respective values. Hence, the main aim of this effort is to study several common national and international IAQ standards in view of the scope to which they include direct or indirect evidence for the validity and applicability of their mandates and requirements. To this end, selected IAQ standards were assessed via a structured schema that includes not only basic information, quality indicators, and suggested and recommended value ranges, but also any reference to scientific studies. The findings of this effort identify certain issues with the transparency of the chain of evidence from the results of technical literature and standard-based IAQ recommendations. Moreover, recommendations are made for the development of future transparent and evidence-based IAQ standards and guidelines.Conference Object Spatial Narratives on Ottoman Architecture: Aegean Port Cities through the Eyes of Western Travelers(2018) Caner Yüksel, Çağla; Katipoğlu Özmen, Ceren; 157494; 05.02.
