Article Citation - WoS: 45Citation - Scopus: 50Scintillations of Incoherent Flat-Topped Gaussian Source Field in Turbulence(Optical Soc Amer, 2007) Baykal, Yahya; Eyyuboglu, Halil T.The intensity fluctuations of incoherent flat-topped Gaussian beams are evaluated when such sources are used in weakly turbulent horizontal atmospheric links. The formulation is developed for a detector having a response time much longer than the source coherence time. The flat-topped Gaussian profile is obtained by superposing many Gaussian beams, then the incoherence is introduced through delta correlation in space. The scintillation index of the incoherent flat-topped Gaussian beams is found to be smaller than the scintillation index of the corresponding incoherent Gaussian beams at the same link length, source size, and wavelength. When compared with the coherent counterparts, the intensity fluctuations of the incoherent flat-topped Gaussian beams are much smaller, yielding the same value only at the spherical wave limit, as expected. Transmitter aperture averaging is a special case of our solution. Variations of the on-axis scintillation of an EGB are studied. It is interesting to find that the scintillation index of an EGB can be smaller than that of a circular Gaussian beam in a weakly turbulent atmosphere under certain conditions and is closely related to the ratio of the beam waist size along the long axis to that along the short axis of the EGB, the wavelength, and the structure constant of the turbulent atmosphere. For different propagation lengths in horizontal atmospheric links, the moduli of the complex degree of coherence at the source and receiver planes are examined when reference points are taken on the receiver axis and off-axis. In the on-axis case, it is observed that in propagation, the moduli of the complex degree of coherence are symmetrical and look like the intensity profile of the related coherent beam propagating in a turbulent atmosphere. For all the beams considered, the moduli of the complex degree of coherence profiles turn into Gaussian shapes beyond certain propagation lengths. In the off-axis case, the moduli of complex degree of coherence patterns become drifted at the earlier propagation lengths. Among the beams investigated, the cos-Gaussian beam is found to be almost independent of the changes in the source partial coherence parameter, and the annular beam seems to be affected the most against the variations of the source partial coherence parameter. Weak turbulence conditions and log-normal distribution are utilized. The Gaussian beam is assumed to propagate on a slant path, the transmitter being ground-based, and the airborne receiver is on-axis positioned. Variations of BER are obtained against the variations in the link length, Gaussian beam source size, zenith angle, wind speed, wavelength, modulation order, data bit rate, equivalent load resistor, avalanche photodetector gain, and detector quantum efficiency. It is observed that the performance of the aeronautical uplink OWCS is affected from atmospheric turbulence significantly. BER variations against the changes in different parameters such as the non-Kolmogorov power law exponent, symbol number, data bit rate, avalanche photodetector gain, equivalent load resistor, detector quantum efficiency, wavelength, turbulence structure constant, and the Gaussian beam source size are analyzed. Making the design of the PPM optical wireless communication system able to operate in a non-Kolmogorov atmosphere will give better BER performance if the parameters are taken into account in line with the trends presented in our results. Results show that as in the atmosphere, also in underwater media the plane wave is more affected by turbulence as compared to the spherical wave. The underwater turbulence effect becomes significant at 5-10 m for a plane wave and at 20-25 m for a spherical wave. The turbulence effect is relatively small in deep water and is large at the surface of the water. Salinity-induced turbulence strongly dominates the scintillations compared to temperature-induced turbulence. In this paper, for the MISO FSO system, a partially coherent radial array and a finite-sized receiver aperture are used at the transmitter and the receiver, respectively. Using the extended Huygens - Fresnel principle, we formulate the average power and the power correlation at the finite-sized slow detector in weak atmospheric turbulence. System performance indicators such as the power scintillation index and the aperture averaging factor are determined. Effects of the source size, ring radius, receiver aperture radius, link distance, and structure constant and the degree of source coherence are analyzed on the performance of the MISO FSO system. In the limiting cases, the numerical results are found to be the same when compared to the existing coherent and partially coherent Gaussian beam scintillation indices. In this paper, we consider a MISO UWOC system which consists of a laser beam array as transmitter and a point detector as receiver. Our aim is to find the scintillation index at the detector in order to quantify the system performance. For this purpose, the average intensity and the average of the square of the intensity are derived in underwater turbulence by using the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle. The scintillation index and the average bit-error-rate (< BER >) formulas presented in this paper depend on the oceanic turbulence parameters, such as the rate of dissipation of the mean-squared temperature, rate of dissipation of kinetic energy per unit mass of fluid, Kolmogorov microscale, and the ratio of temperature to salinity contributions to the refractive index spectrum, the link length, and the wavelength. Recently, we have derived an equivalent structure constant of atmospheric turbulence and expressed it in terms of the oceanic turbulence parameters [Appl. Opt. 55, 1228 (2016)]. In the formulation in this paper, this equivalent structure constant is utilized, which enables us to employ the existing similar formulation valid in atmospheric turbulence. The laser array configuration is composed of a number of the same size laser beamlets symmetrically located around a ring having a radius that determines the distance of the ring from the origin. The variations of the correlations of the received field originating from such laser array incidence versus the diagonal length starting from a receiver point are examined for various laser array parameters, turbulence parameters, and the locations of the reception points. Laser array parameters consist of the ring radius and the number and size of the beamlets. Structure constant, link length, and wavelength are the turbulence parameters whose effects on the field correlation of the laser arrays are also investigated. The Rytov method is employed together with the equivalent structure constant, which makes our results valid in weak turbulence. In the limiting case, our solution correctly reduces to the known scintillation index of the Gaussian beam in Kolmogorov turbulence. For all the higher-order even modes, increase in the power law exponent, a of the non-Kolmogorov spectrum is found to increase the scintillations. When the source size of the higher-order modes is large, higher-order even modes attain almost the same scintillation index values for all a. However, for small source sizes, being valid for any realization of the non-Kolmogorov spectrum, the scintillations decrease as the mode order becomes large. The changes in the propagation distance, structure constant, and the wavelength do not vary these trends. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America
