Article Dispossessed Homes: Remembering Cyprus in the Aftermath of Conflict(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Pancaroglu, Seda BaharThis paper will interrogate the reconfiguration of "home" in the context of the Cyprus conflict, as depicted in Christy Lefteri's novel A Watermelon, a Fish, and a Bible. The long history of ethnic and political tensions between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities escalated with political instability and reached its peak in 1974. Set during the heated midst of the 1974 conflict, Lefteri's novel offers multiple meanings of home through shifting focalisation. This study combines focalisation from narratology with Henri Lefebvre's the Production of Space, enriched by theories surrounding the notion of home. This analytical framework enables a comprehensive exploration of how narrative perspectives both shape and reflect the phenomenology of space in literature, particularly within conflict zones. This approach is particularly relevant for analysing divided or contested geographies, such as Cyprus in Christy Lefteri's A Watermelon, a Fish, and a Bible. By examining how characters perceive and navigate their surroundings, the analysis will reveal how "home", once seen as secure, familiar, or sacred, is redefined by conflict and how new meanings emerge in moments of crisis. It also highlights the dialogic nature of spatial experience in literature, where multiple perspectives on space can coexist, clash, and influence each other, reflecting the complexity of lived experience in a divided realm.Article Integrating the Seljuk Cultural Layer Into Contemporary Life: The Case of Niğde Historic City Center(Istanbul Univ, Research Inst Turkology, Dept Art History, 2025) Yavaşcan, Emel Efe; Urak, Zehra GedizGünümüz tarihî kent merkezleri, yer altı ve yer üstündeki tarihî izleriyle, kültürel zenginlikleri ve özgün kimlikle8 rinin yanı sıra, “yerin ruhu”nu yansıtan kentsel hafıza alanlarıdır. Editorial Perspectives on International Financial Reporting and Auditing in the Airline Industry Foreword(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2022) Ozturk, CanArticle Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Vampire Versus the Empire: Bram Stoker's Reproach of Fin-De Britain in Dracula(Cambridge Univ Press, 2018) Koc, Ertugrul; Demir, YagmurEditorial Advanced Theoretical and Applied Studies of Fractional Differential Equations 2013(Hindawi Publishing Corporation, 2014) Baleanu, Dumitru; Trujillo, Juan J.; Ahmad, BashirConference Object Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 5Vester's Sensitivity Model for Genetic Networks With Time-Discrete Dynamics(Springer international Publishing Ag, 2014) Moreno, Liana Amaya; Defterli, Ozlem; Fuegenschuh, Armin; Weber, Gerhard-Wilhelm; Amaya Moreno, Liana; Fügenschuh, ArminWe propose a new method to explore the characteristics of genetic networks whose dynamics are described by a linear discrete dynamical model x(t+1) = Ax(t). The gene expression data x(t) is given for various time points and the matrix A of interactions among the genes is unknown. First we formulate and solve a parameter estimation problem by linear programming in order to obtain the entries of the matrix A. We then use ideas from Vester's Sensitivity Model, more precisely, the Impact Matrix, and the determination of the Systemic Roles, to understand the interactions among the genes and their role in the system. The method identifies prominent outliers, that is, the most active, reactive, buffering and critical genes in the network. Numerical examples for different datasets containing mRNA transcript levels during the cell cycle of budding yeast are presented.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Using Quick Response (Qr) Codes as an Indoor Wayfinding Tool: Benefits and Limitations(Middle East Technical University, 2022) Tünger, Ç.; İmamoğlu, Ç.Quick Response (QR) code technology can improve many aspects of our lives, including wayfinding. However, since the indoor navigation tools based on QR codes require specific hardware and software, their practical application is limited. To examine this issue, this research aimed to propose and investigate the performance of a lightweight QR codebased wayfinding tool for indoor environments that is low-cost, easy to adapt, and free of location-aware technologies. To do so, we conducted an experimental wayfinding study in a complex university campus building with 38 participants under two conditions: with and without QR codes. We measured wayfinding performance, perceived ease of task, comfort level of the participants, and collected their assessments of the study. To reveal the relationships between the variables and differences between conditions, we conducted the Pearson correlation coefficient test and repeated measure ANOVA. Our findings showed that although the participants completed the wayfinding tasks in the QR code condition at a lower speed and in a longer duration than the no-QR condition, their evaluations were generally more positive. Using QR codes inside complex buildings for indoor wayfinding may prove to be a lightweight and low-cost alternative to You-Are-Here maps, with potential to decrease user anxiety. © 2022, Metu Journal of the Faculty of Architecture. Moreover, texture image patches when translated, rotated or scaled lie in low dimensional subspaces of the high-dimensional space spanned by the grey values. These two aspects make the mixture of local subspace models worth consideration for segmenting this type of images. In recent years a number of mixtures of local PCA models have been proposed. Most of these models require the user to set the number of subspaces and subspace dimensionalities. To make the model autonomous, we propose a greedy EM algorithm to find a suboptimal number of subspaces, besides using a global retained variance ratio to estimate for each subspace the dimensionality that retains the given variability ratio. We provide experimental results for testing the proposed method on texture segmentation.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Statistical Analysis of Gait Data To Assist Clinical Decision Making(Springer-verlag Berlin, 2010) Sen Koktas, Nigar; Duin, Robert P. W.; Köktaş, Nigar ŞenGait analysis is used for non-automated and automated diagnosis of various neuromuskuloskeletal abnormalities. Automated systems are important in assisting physicians for diagnosis of various diseases. This study presents preliminary steps of designing a clinical decision support system for semi-automated diagnosis of knee illnesses by using temporal gait data. This study compares the gait of Ill patients with 110 age-matched normal subjects. Different feature reduction techniques, (FFT, averaging and PCA) are compared by the Mahalanobis Distance criterion and by performances of well known classifiers. The feature selection criteria used reveals that the gait measurements for different parts of the body such as knee or hip to be more effective for detection of the illnesses. Then, a set of classifiers is tested by a ten-fold cross validation approach on all datasets. It is observed that average based datasets performed better than FFT applied ones for almost all classifiers while PCA applied dataset performed better for linear classifiers. In general, nonlinear classifiers performed quite well (best error rate is about 0.035) and better than the linear ones.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 12New Distinguishers Based on Random Mappings Against Stream Ciphers(Springer-verlag Berlin, 2008) Turan, Meltem Soenmez; Calik, Cagdas; Saran, Nurdan Buz; Doganaksoy, AliStatistical randomness testing plays an important role in security analysis of cryptosystems. In this study, we aim to propose a new framework of randomness testing based on random mappings. Considering the probability distributions of coverage and P-lengths, we present three new distinguishers; (i) coverage test, (ii) p-test and (iii) DP-coverage test and applied them on Phase III Candidates of eSTREAM project. We experimentally observed some statistical weaknesses of Po-maranch using the coverage test.
