The Structure and development of Turkish foreign trade

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural changes of Turkey's foreign trade starting from 1923 to date. The period between 1923 - 1950 is briefly summarized and the period starting between 1950 to today is studied more in detail. Turkey, which was an agricultural country beginning of the Republic, shifted her production structure with the passage of time. The importance of agricultural products in exports gradually decreased whereas the share of industrial products has grown. A similar pattern is also observed in imports. The place of investment goods in imports has been taken up by intermediate goods. This study evaluates each period by taking the existing conditions into account at the time. The major events and decisions of the period studied are investigated. The objective is to show the structural changes by periods and to determine wheather these changes have been useful. At the end of the study, based on the evaluation of foreign trade policies, some suggestions were made.

Bu çalışmada, Türkiye dış ticaretinin 1923'ten günümüze dönemler itibariyle yaşadığı yapısal değişiklikler konu edilmiştir. 1923 - 1950 arası dönem özetlenmiş, 1950'lerden günümüze kadar olan dönem ise daha detaylı incelenmiştir. Cumhuriyetin kuruluşunda tarımsal bir toplum olan Türkiye'nin zaman içerisinde üretim yapısı değişmiştir, önceleri, ihracatın büyük kısmını oluşturan tarım ürünleri zaman içerisinde azalarak yerini endüstri ürünlerine bırakmıştır. İthalatta da yapısal değişim yaşanmış; önceleri, ağırlıklı olan yatırım malları günümüze gelindiğinde yerini aramallara bırakmıştır. Bu çalışmada, her dönem kendi koşullarında değerlendirilmiştir. Bu dönemler içinde önemli olaylara, kararlara yer verilmiştir. Amaç; dönemler itibariyle bu yapısal değişimi göstermek ve bu değişimin sağlıklı olup olmadığını tespit etmektir. Uygulanan dış ticaret politikaları gözlemlenmiş, değerlendirilerek bazı öneriler getirilmiştir.
