Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 4Analyzing Natural Lighting Conditions From the Perspective of Biophilic Design in Indoor Office Environments(Institute of Physics, 2022) Avci, A.N.; Karaman, G.D.The term "biophilic design"is recognized by some designers who coined a word for designing instinctively using fresh understandings, reasons, and views, which helps reconnect us with the natural world in the indoor environment. Within the various patterns that connect humans with nature, natural lighting provides an orientation to the day and night according to the sun's location and cycles, which is essential for human health and wellness. The supply and quality of natural lighting, including its influence on mood, have been extensively investigated and written about for many years in various locations and the overlapping science and design disciplines. This paper analyzes the biophilic design approach to mood for the natural lighting conditions that change according to the position of the office environments in winter. The selected two indoor office environments were located in the Faculty of Architecture at Çankaya University on Main Campus, on the second floor of the building. Office-1 overlooked the design studio, preventing it from taking natural lighting directly, and Office-2 directly penetrated the natural lighting. Natural lighting-based photos were taken from the selected offices during three periods of the day. The photos and a survey were directed at the two groups: Group 1 consisted of the students who took the Natural and Artificial Lighting Course, and Group 2 students who did not take this course. The experimental instruments analyzed their moods to evaluate natural lighting conditions. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.Article Acoustics and Speech Privacy in Open-Plan Offices: A Case Study on Computer-Based Task Performance(2018) Kitapçı, KıvançThe aim of this study is to find out the effects of speech and speech intelligibility on computer-based task performance in open-plan offices. The research was conducted in a real open-plan office environment to include the open-office experience of subjects to the analysis. STM Bilkent Office was selected as the case, and 40 available open-office occupants were participated to the study. The experiment consists of two main phases. In the first phase, acoustical simulation of the site was done, to derive distribution graphs for speech related room acoustics parameters. In the second phase, occupants’ computer-based task performances were tested under three different sound environments, which are continuous noise, speech and masked speech. According to statistical analysis of the performance test, and the acoustical properties of the case STM, suggestions for renovation were discussed. It was found that effects of intelligible speech on occupants’ task performance are only psychological, because it is significant that there is no difference between results of performance test. However, all of the occupants respond to the questionnaires that speech sound environment was the most distracting one. Proposal for renovation was given to minimize the effects of intelligible speech on occupants for preventing the long-term effects on occupants’ health.Article Assessment of Spatial Factors Influencing User Satisfaction in Quick-Casual Restaurants(2022) Saleh Ahmadi, Reda R.; Akbay, SaadetUsers' evaluations of the restaurant environment are influenced by various design factors and their level of satisfaction and comfort, of which colour is an essential component. Several studies in the literature have demonstrated the influence of colour in interior design on human behaviour and psychology in various contexts. This study investigates the spatial factors influencing users' satisfaction in quick-casual restaurants. User satisfaction was measured using four major elements: product, service, price, and physical environment. This study used a questionnaire to assess user satisfaction in four quick-casual restaurants in Ankara, Turkey. The emphasis on colour effects was intended to evaluate the physical environment of the restaurants. The study results, which included the participation of 120 restaurant users, show that participants rated the various restaurant environments in a variety of ways. The assessments provided by the participants are statistically tested for significant differences based on gender, frequency of restaurant usage, and colour properties for both user satisfaction and the evaluation of the physical environment using one-way between groups of variance (ANOVA) (p < 0.05). The findings show that demographics have a limited influence on restaurant user satisfaction, though it varies depending on colour properties. Additionally, the results suggest that the environmental colours of quick-casual restaurants significantly influence user satisfaction, overall satisfaction levels, and the evaluation of the physical environmentsArticle DESIGN AND COUNTER DESIGN AGAINST CONSUMPTION: 1972 “ITALY, THE NEW DOMESTIC LANDSCAPE” EXHIBITION (1)(2023) Boysan, Aysu; Tunca, Gülru MutluIn Western Europe, the 1960s and 1970s covered the radical criticism of some European designers against mass production and consumption. Several Italian Radical designers raised the most compelling objection at an exhibition on the other side of the ocean: “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” (INDL), curated by Emilio Ambasz in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1972. INDL marked a significant moment in contemporary design history. For the show, Ambasz selected more than a hundred “objects” produced by Italian manufacturers and displayed them in specially designed cases in the garden area. Moreover, he invited eleven Italian designers to create unique “microenvironments” by interpreting concepts assigned by a “special design program,” such as environmental psychology, locality, urbanism, micro and macro-scale housing, consumerism, and mass production. Although the “objects” displayed in the garden were of great importance - since the event was one of the first instances of Italian design’s introduction to the American public-this study concentrates on the contradicting responses of Italian designers, under headings “design and counterdesign as postulation” for understanding the design philosophy behind the appearance of “design versus non-design” dialectics of that era, which is still a recognized topic in contemporary architectural theory. This study, therefore, analyzes the eclectic and postmodern approaches of six Italian designers in the “design” category and the provocative denials of Radical designers presented under the “counterdesign” category. It aims to understand better the impact of this discursive opposition made visible by the exhibition on the anticonsumerist approaches and the search for alternative methodologies, which subsequently increased among designers.Book Part Colour harmony: The ideality of pleasurableness(2017) Akbay, Saadet; Joao João Durão, MariaThe search for the essence of colour harmony has a long tradition that, being a quest for aesthetic values, remains a contemporary question insofar as it addresses the interrelated issues of both beauty and pleasure. Colour harmony has been discussed in terms of two different points of view. As a measurement of aesthetics, the researches of colour harmony are based on the discovery of its systematic rules by identifying the relationship between colours and its aesthetic value in beauty and harmony. The proportional and orderly arrangements of colours and their relations to mathematics are the main concerns of this first approach. As a measurement of emotion, colour harmony is regarded as subject matter of pleasure, subjective feeling which is peculiar to an individual. Relying on the second approach, many studies have been conducted to identify the reasons behind why colour combinations are perceived as beautiful, pleasant, and harmonious. Thus, this paper is a retrospective review of the literature of colour harmony, its theories, and principles considering the two approaches. The assumption is that, in either case, colour harmony is grounded in a search for the ideality of pleasurableness. Conference Object Understanding of User Evaluations on Fun Products(Sciencepark Sci, Organization & Counseling Ltd, 2017) Akbay, SaadetThe fields of human-computer interaction and interaction design are increasingly dealing with the issues of fun, enjoyment and pleasure throughout the last two decades. The concept of fun becomes a concern in the development of usability of a product. Fun is an attribute considered to be an emotional aspect of interaction of a product. The evaluations and interpretations of fun on products are, therefore, subjective and personal which is peculiar to a user. A study, hence, was conducted to explore the term fun in everyday experience products. The aim is to understand what features and characteristics of a product make it fun and enjoyable to use. A total of twenty-nine users participated in the study. Each participant was interviewed individually in order for his/her personal attributes, interpretations and evaluations of fun to be elicited from a pool of thirty-two products. The participants' responses to open-ended questions were qualitatively analyzed by the use of content analysis procedure. The collected data was then grouped under four main categories which are visual aspect, functionality, usability, and contextual content. The findings of the study show that visual aspect of a product is the most concerned feature, followed by contextual content, usability and functionality, when evaluating the fun in everyday experience products.Article Citation - WoS: 45Citation - Scopus: 59Analysing Sound Environment and Architectural Characteristics of Libraries Through Indoor Soundscape Framework(Polska Akad Nauk, Polish Acad Sciences, inst Fundamental Tech Res Pas, 2016) Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; Kang, JianThis study presents the indoor soundscape framework in detail by describing the variables and factors that form an indoor soundscape study. The main objective is to introduce a new indoor soundscaping framework and systematically explain the variables that contribute to the overall evaluation of an indoor soundscape. Hence, the dependencies of physical and psychoacoustical factors of the sound environment and the spatial factors of the built entity are statistically tested. The new indoor soundscaping framework leads to an overarching evaluation perspective of enclosed sound environments, combining objective room acoustics research and noise control engineering with architectural analysis. Therefore, it is hypothesised that case spaces with certain plan organisations, volumetric relations, and spatial referencing lead to differentiated sound pressure level (SPL) and loudness (N) values. SPL and N parametric variances of the sound environments are discussed through the statistical findings with respect to the architectural characteristics of each library case space. The results show that the relation between crowd level variances and sound environment parametric values is statistically significant. It is also found that increasing the atrium height and atrium void volume, the atrium's presence as a common architectural element, and its interpenetrating reference and domain containment results in unwanted variances and acoustic formations, leading to high SPL and N values.Review Motivators for Green Buildings: A Review(2018) Akreim, Mohamed; Süzer, ÖzgeMotivators can be defined as specific catalysts that drive people to act in a certain way. These motivators are important for promoting green buildings and have a clear impact on decision-makers to adopt and implement the green building concept in architectural practice. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review to identify the important motivators for the adoption of green buildings among the stakeholders of the construction industry, the categorization and efficiency of green building motivators, and also the strategies for green building motivators. By reviewing 32 relevant studies conducted in different countries from 2008 to 2017, a total of 26 factors were identified as the main motivators to promote green buildings. These green building motivators were categorized into environmental, economic, and social motivators. With regard to efficiency, it was found that all green building motivators, whether environmental, economic or social are important for promoting green buildings and to determine a priority among these categories was not possible. The strategies for the adoption of green building motivators were also found. It is notable that the government has the greatest role to motivate stakeholders to adopt and implement the green building concept. The literature review of this study has a wide scope, covering most of the countries in the world, including developed and developing countries from the West to East. Hence, unlike most studies on the main issue of this paper that focus on a specific country or region, this in-depth research led to the development of a list of motivators for green buildings, derived from an extensive range of nations, which vary from environmental, economic, and social This paper is expected to provide valuable information for decision-makers in the construction industry, namely, governmental authorities, design teams, and owners of projects regarding what motivate people to help further promote green buildings. The findings may also be useful for researchers to pursue further analyses on similar topics. Article An analysis on mixed-use high-rise residential complexes in Istanbul as to their prioritization of evaluation categories in LEED(Çankaya University Press, 2018) Süzer, Özge; Yılmaz, MeltemThe most globally used environmental assessment tool; LEED, offers the certification of projects according to the evaluation criteria of green buildings. Furthermore, emerging mixed-use high-rise residential complexes (MHRC) in metropolitans like Istanbul draw attention, as they help reduce carbon emissions by providing various facilities in one entity for its residents. Yet, they also have negative effects on resources, due to excessive energy consumptions owing to their high user capacities. The objective of this study is to analyse LEED certified MHRC in Istanbul, regarding their prioritization of evaluation categories. LEED’s database revealed nine certified MHRC under the NC scheme. Based on their gained points, mean ranks ( ) of categories were calculated, which indicated the priorities given by this building typology in Istanbul. The obtained category priority order was then compared to the one implied by LEED’s assigned category weights. It was found that EA gained much lower attention than needed.Article Citation - WoS: 32Citation - Scopus: 37Development and Testing of Indoor Soundscape Questionnaire for Evaluating Contextual Experience in Public Spaces(Sage Publications Ltd, 2017) Dokmeci Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur; Kang, JianAn Indoor Soundscape Questionnaire aiming at the evaluation of indoor public sound environments was designed, statistically tested and presented. This study focuses on working environments and user interactions with the related soundscape variables, in university office spaces. Initially, a conceptual framework is established in order to evaluate the occupant’s spatial experience and soundscape perception. Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) methodology is adapted for data collection and analysis. A systematical procedure of POE has been conducted to collect the data in three levels; (1) indication, (2) investigation, and (3) diagnosis. The first POE stage on indication is carried out by observations on space characteristics and measurements of the physical environment. The structure of the case study design and POE methodology is explained and the initial findings are presented as part of this ongoing studyArticle Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Tensile Performance of Traditional and Modern Corner Joints in Wooden Structures(Zagreb Univ, Fac Forestry, 2022) Atar, Musa; Gode, Fazli; Kucuktuvek, Mustafa; Akan, Asli Er; Ormecioglu, Hilal Tugba; Keskin, HakanCorner joints are critical points of wooden structures not only in furniture construction but also in traditional wooden architecture, especially in constructions without nails. This study was performed to determine the effects of particular factors such as the axis of assembly, types of material, and adhesive on the tensile performance of various modern and traditional types of wooden corner joints. For this purpose, various corner joint specimens were prepared with three different wooden materials: Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris Lipsky) wood, Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra Lipsky) wood, and Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) using two different adhesives: polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and polyurethane (Desmodur-VTKA) glues; and five different wooden joint types: dowel, tongue-and-groove, half-blind dovetail, screw, and eccentric screw joints. Tensile performance tests, vertical and parallel to the axis of assembly, were carried out according to ASTM D 1037 guidelines. Experiments indicated that, while the tensile performance of MDF specimen connected with a screw and PVAc adhesive was the highest under loading parallel to the axis of assembly (4592 N); it was the lowest under loading parallel to the axis of assembly in MDF specimen connected with tongue-and-groove joint and PVAc adhesive (260 N), respectively. As a result, it may be advantageous to apply screwed joints in corners for high tensile strength in parallel to the axis of the assembly.Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 21Indoor Soundscape Perception in Residential Spaces: a Cross-Cultural Analysis in Ankara, Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd, 2020) Mohamed, Mohamed Ali Elghadaffi; Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur DokmeciStudies in the literature suggest that factors influencing soundscape perception are based heavily on sound environments and auditory perception. Nevertheless, in studying the soundscape perception of people living in certain acoustic environments, cultural, social and habitual criteria should be taken into consideration. Residential environments are where people spend most of their time. Therefore, understanding the soundscape perception in the residential context is significant for indoor soundscape studies. This research investigates the residential soundscape perception differences of two different culture groups living in Ankara, Turkey. A total of 405 Arab and Turkish residents are included in the study. The questionnaire findings are statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance and t-test. The results suggest that the sound environment in a house setting is equally important for both culture groups, while the Arab residents showed a higher satisfaction level from their present sound environment in their residences. Furthermore, statistically significant differences have been found based on cultural variances of the two groups regarding the overall soundscape perception, sound source loudness, frequency of occurrence, and sound favourability evaluations.Article Visitor Case of Site Management: Valle Dei. Although glass is a material that can survive long, as can be seen from the archaeological pieces in many museums, in practice the glass structures that built nowadays have a finite life time. A notorious case is the original New York Apple Cube, which was removed and replaced within several years of original completion.Whatever the eventual lifetime of the structure, there will be a point where the structure needs to be demolished. This introduces critical questions about the relation between ecological impact and the demolition methods and procedure. This paper looks at the eco-impact of different end of life scenarios of glass structures, using the Haarlem glass cube as a well-documented example to determine the differences between various ends of life scenarios.Article A Study on Determining the Criteria that Parents Consider When Buying Children's Room Furniture(2019) Çelebi Yazıcıoğlu, N.
