In particular, it explores how individualcharacteristics (i.e. gender, age, income, education) are associated with the usage of formal financial servicesand impinge on the perceived barriers to account ownership among financially excluded individuals in Turkey. The results of the study indicate that being man, older, richer and more educated increases the likelihood ofhaving a formal account and formal saving. Moreover, mobile banking is found to be driven by identicalindividual characteristics with that of other traditional formal financial services usage. As regards with the mainobstacles for not having a formal account, each one of the individual attributes seems to be significant inexplaining different voluntary and involuntary self-reported barriers behind financial exclusion. The findingsare of remarkable importance for designing policies to promote financial inclusion in Turkey.Item Citation Count: Özşuca Erenoğlu, Ekin Ayşe (2019). Using the World Bank's 2017 Global Findex Database, it explores the underlying factors of gender differences in formal financial services usage via Fairlie decomposition method. The findings of the study indicate that a significant portion of the disparity in financial inclusion is attributable to employment, while age and tertiary education are also found as contributing factors to the financial inclusion gap. Another notable finding is that upper income quintiles contribute positively to the gender gap, indeed to a greater extent compared to lower income groups.Item Citation Count: Özşuca, Ekin (2019). "Küresel Kriz Sonrasında Türkiye’de Para Politikasının Banka Karlılığı Üzerindeki Etkisi", Bankacılar Dergisi, Vol. 30, No. 110, pp. 56-74.Küresel Kriz Sonrasında Türkiye’de Para Politikasının Banka Karlılığı Üzerindeki Etkisi(2019) Özşuca, Ekin Ayşe; 237965; Çankaya Üniversitesi, İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, Uluslararası Ticaret BölümüBu çalışma, küresel kriz sonrasında Türkiye’de uygulanan geleneksel olmayan para politikasının bankaların karlılığı üzerindeki etkilerini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu çerçevede, 2011-2017 dönemi için faiz oranlarının bankaların alternatif karlılık göstergeleri üzerindeki etkisi ve çeşitli bankaya özgü özelliklerin para politikası değişikliklerine karşı banka performansı üzerinde farklı sonuçlara yol açıp açmadığı araştırılmaktadır. Çalışmanın sonuçları, net faiz gelirleri ve faiz dışı gelirlerin para politikasındaki daralmalardan asimetrik şekilde etkilendiğini, ancak net faiz gelirlerindeki artışın faiz dışı gelirler üzerindeki negatif etkiyi ortadan kaldırarak, daha yüksek faiz oranlarının banka karlılığını arttırdığını ortaya koymaktadır. Büyüklük, sermaye düzeyi ve likidite, para politikası şoklarının bankaların gelir bileşenleri ve karlılıkları üzerinde yarattığı etkilerin farklılaşmasında rol oynayan özellikler olarak bulunmuştur.Item Citation Count: Özşuca, Ekin (2019). Transition economies provide rich evidence for analyzing this relationship given the predominance of foreign banks in their banking systems. The results reveal that foreign bank presence is positively associated with banking sector outreach indicators, such as ATM and branch penetration, after controlling for several macroeconomic, institutional and financial country-specific factors, however foreign bank entry is found to have no impact on the use of financial services, as measured by borrowing per capita. Results from low and high foreign bank threshold subsamples provide further evidence that foreign bank penetration effects on financial inclusion do not vary by thresholdsItem Citation Count: Özşuca, Ekin. "Revisiting the bank lending channel in Turkey under the unconventional monetary policy framework", Business and Management Studies: An International Journal, Vol.10, No.3, pp.1011-1021.Revisiting the bank lending channel in Turkey under the unconventional monetary policy framework(2022) Özşuca, Ekin; 237965; Çankaya Üniversitesi, İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, Uluslararası Ticaret BölümüThis paper provides empirical evidence regarding the bank lending channel under Turkey's unconventional monetary policy framework. Towards this end, the impact of changes in monetary policy stance on bank credit growth is investigated using a dynamic panel data mode lling approach between 2011 and 2019. The empirical results reveal cross-sectional heterogeneity in the loan supply of Turkish banks following a change in monetary policy, which implies an operative bank lending channel in the post-2010 period of the policy mix. Small, liquidity-constrained, and inadequately capitalized banks tend to experience sharper contractions in their lending during monetary policy tightening episodes. Besides, in terms of bank-specific characteristics, the findings demonstrate that larger bank size and capital is associated with a higher loan supply. On the contrary, liquidity is found to harm bank lending.Item Citation Count: Özşuca Erenoğlu, Ekin Ayşe, "The Effect of Supply Constraints on Bank Credit: New Evidence from Euro Area in the Aftermath of the Global Crisis", Selected Social Sciences Research with Global and Local Approach, SRA Academic Publishing, pp.133-149, 2018.The Effect of Supply Constraints on Bank Credit: New Evidence from Euro Area in the Aftermath of the Global Crisis(SRA Academic Publishing, 2018) Özşuca Erenoğlu, Ekin Ayşe; 237965; Çankaya Üniversitesi, İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, Uluslararası Ticaret BölümüItem Citation Count: Özşuca, Ekin Ayşe. "What Explains Firm’s Access to Finance in Turkey?/Türkiye’de Frmaların Finansmana Erişiminin Belirleyicileri Nelerdir?", Turkish Studies, Vol. 15, No. 2, pp. 301-315.What Explains Firm’s Access to Finance in Turkey?(2020) Özşuca Erenoğlu, Ekin Ayşe; 237965; Çankaya Üniversitesi, İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, Uluslararası Ticaret BölümüThe relationship between the financial sector and private non-financial sector deserves particular attention given the incontestable importance of the private sector as an engine of economic growth and job creation. Notwithstanding this importance, however, the evidence is highly suggestive that Turkish firms are confronted with obstacles in accessing formal financial services. Along these lines, this paper provides new empirical evidence for the determinants of access to finance by the enterprises in Turkey. In particular, the study investigates some enterprise-specific characteristics that may have an impact on a firm’s ability in accessing finance to scrutinize whether Turkish firms are credit constrained. The empirical analysis is based on micro level data from the World Bank’s Enterprise Survey for the fiscal year 2019. Three different measures of credit constraint are computed; a subjective measure based on perception and two objective measures based on the usage of formal financial services and direct information on credit constraints. Employing both subjective and objective measures of credit provide means for assessing the extent to which and how key determinants among firms’ characteristics displays variation between enterprises categorized by alternative credit constraint measures. Overall, the findings of the study reveal that the age of the firm, experience of the current manager, female/foreign participation in ownership and exporter status are found to be significantly associated with the firm’s access to finance. Notably, the results display several differences in underlying firm level factors for credit situation among subcategories based on alternative credit indicators. The findings of the study are of remarkable importance for designing policy to improve firms’ credit constraints and advance bank-firm connectedness in Turkey.
