In many cities of the world, owing to the complex dynamics associated with the increasing global and local pressures, urban change takes different forms, with important implications on the resilience of cities. Istanbul is one of the best examples of this, where the different types of urban dynamics that can be experienced simultaneously are being illustrated. This makes Istanbul a good study area for defining how the policies and plans adopted to meet the increasing needs and demands can affect a city’s resilience.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 10Dimensions of housing satisfaction: a case study based on perceptions of rural migrants living in Dikmen(Middle East Technical Univ, 2013) Haliloglu Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; 50343Conference Object Günümüz Kentsel Politikalarının Sosyo-Mekânsal Etkilerinin Değerlendirilmesinde Sosyal Dayanıklılık Çerçevesi: Kavramsal Bir Tartışma(2013) Altay Kaya, Deniz; 54723Dayanıklılık/ Esneyebilirlik çerçevesi yardımı ile küreselleşme etkisinde günümüz kentlerinde gerçekleşen değişimlerin (ve dönüşümlerin) sosyo-mekansal etkileri sorunsalı, küreselleşme ve neo-liberal politikalar etkisinde yaşama ve çalışma koşullarında gerçekleşen değişimlere farklı sosyal grupların dayanabilme ve kendini yenileyerek ayak uydurabilme sorunsalı olarak yeniden tanımlanabilir. Conference Object Dönüşüm Potansiyeline Sahip Planlı Gelişmiş Konut Alanlarında Memnuniyet ve Beklenti: Altınpark Türk-İş Blokları Örneği(2013) Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; 50343; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaConference Object Yönetim Sınırlarının Belirlenmesinde Kent Mekanını ve Yerel Toplumsal İlişkileri Anlamak: Ankara Çayyolu Örneği(2013) Özdemir Sarı, Özgül Burcu; Özdemir, Suna SenemArticle Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Student participation in Bologna Process: a case study from Turkey(Fac Teacher Education, 2014) Kahraman, Z. Ezgi; Sakarya, A. Orcun; 50343; 19342Bologna Process studies in Cankaya University's Interior Architecture Department (INAR), Turkey have been initiated in 2008. The goal of this study is to explore students' perceptions about the new programme outcomes framed with the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework and to provide a set of guidelines for the Bologna Process to be implemented. A questionnaire including semi-structured questions is conducted in the data collection process. Content analysis method is used in order to examine students' perceptual outcomes. The findings of the study display that students' perceptions underline the importance of the acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences in social, economic and managerial dimensions of the professional life. Results also reveal the need of students for the acquisition and use of communicative, collaborative and interdisciplinary aspects of the profession and their expectations on both theoretical and practical contents of INAR courses. Furthermore, this study which mainly followed a student-cantered approach concluded that it is also possible to generalize new programme outcomes through the active participation of students.Conference Object Sanayi kentinde inşaat sektörünün ivmelenmesi ve kentsel gelişim analizi Denizli örneği(2015) Orhan, Ezgi; Zengin, Murat; 34038; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaArticle Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 6Reflection of Political Restructuring on Urban Symbols: The Case of Presidential Palace in Ankara, Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016) Orhan, Ezgi; Orhan, Ezgi; 34038; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaAnkara, capital of Turkey has been the revolution space of the country after the proclamation of republic in 1923. The city has carried out the urban symbols of the republican ideology and modernity vision created by the nationalist administrators and elites. The newly established state used architecture and urban planning in transmitting the ideals of national unity and sovereignty by breaking off its ties from Ottoman heritage. After the span of eighty years, Turkey has experienced a new political hegemony. Post-2000s' political approach changed the urban symbols of early Republican period and redesigned the capital in line with its ideological basis. One of the most concrete transformations is observed in the presidential palace of the country which conveys the political intents of each period through its spatial and architectural organizations. This study, therefore, aims to put forward the change in urban symbols and their meanings by focusing on the presidential palace. The palaces are investigated in observational domains; their spatial configurations, buildings, and symbols in relation to the political intents on urban areas and public realm. This paper concludes that in both periods presidential palaces with respect to their spatial and architectural designs are regarded as the icons in representing the dominant political power; the former used it as an instrument of national sovereignty whereas the latter used it as a mark of dominancy over the nation.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 5Urban spatial structuring following disasters: empirical findings from location choices of businesses in Adapazari, Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016) Orhan, Ezgi; Orhan, Ezgi; 34038; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaThis study argues that ignorance of businesses in disaster management systems from the point of spatial policies leads to deviations from initial recovery goals aiming to create a safer urban environment. Therefore, the paper examines the location choices of businesses in a disaster-stricken case from Turkey through an empirical research conducted after the 1999 Earthquake. In doing so, data were gathered from 232 firms in Adapazari city via a questionnaire to inquire about their location choices before and after the disaster and the reasons behind their strategy. Findings suggest that recovery goals at community level cannot be achieved without referring to the spatial decisions of businesses in hazard-prone areas. With regard to the findings of the study, policy recommendations are developed to guide post-disaster practises from a space-sensitive perspective by focusing on businesses.Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 20Local responses to urban redevelopment projects: The case of Beyoglu, Istanbul(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2016) Yetiskul, Emine; Kayasu, Serap; Ozdemir, Suna YasarUrban redevelopment projects became the primary mechanisms of neoliberal urban policies in Istanbul. By analyzing the urban redevelopment projects of Beyoglu and the responsive practices of local actors, this paper highlights the role of community organizations in resisting and challenging the state's urban planning policies. Planning decisions which regulate these factors are expected to make contribution to safer urban and social contexts and resilience of cities. However, in developing countries such as Turkey where disaster management is not an integrated part of urban planning process, planning decisions may serve for the construction of vulnerabilities. This study reads urban vulnerabilities with respect to urban structuring led by planning decisions. In doing so, an earthquake-prone city, Adapazari was selected to investigate urban vulnerability according to different planning periods and disaster history. The outcome of this study is that planning decisions disregarding urban risks may not contribute to the creation of a safer spatial and social context with respect to disaster mitigation, rather serve to reproduction of urban vulnerabilities.Article Citation - WoS: 1Investigating the "Ruins of Modernity" of the city: The case of Stone Ateliers, Denizli(Kare Publ, 2016) Orhan, Ezgi; Orhan, Ezgi; 34038; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaThe city planning and architecture had been used as the instruments of the young regime in making itself visible, concrete, and symbolized. The buildings and urban plans transmitting the foundation ideals of Republic together with modernity have contributed to the creation of national sovereignty and a modern society. Divergence from the planning and architectural approach to that period and becoming the target of the political structure of particularly post 2000s caused the formation of a new expression in space. Yusuf Batur Vocational High School's Stone Ateliers have been one of the places enabling to read the process; it was symbolized with early Republican Period, left in time, and finally intended to be deleted from the social memory by collapsing. This paper focuses on the transformation process of Denizli Stone Ateliers to the ruins of modernity by investigating its symbolic meaning and spatial structure.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 14Spatial and temporal modeling of parcel-level land dynamics(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2017) Tepe, Emre; Guldmann, Jean-MichelNeighborhood and historical conditions are important factors in land dynamics. However, models that explicitly incorporate spatial and temporal dependencies face challenges in data availability, methodology and computation. In this research, parcel-level dynamics are investigated using the geocoded Auditor's tax database for Delaware County, Ohio, including 73,560 parcels over the period 1990-2012. A binary spatio-temporal autologistic model (STARM), incorporating space and time and their interactions, is used to investigate parcel-level dynamics. The results show that the model is able capture the impacts of contemporaneous and historical neighborhood conditions around parcels, as well as the effects of other variables such as distances to various facilities and infrastructures, agricultural and residential land-use shares within a half mile radius circle, and population density and growth expectation at the census tract level. Developed by social scientists to evaluate people's well-being, satisfaction, and happiness, the concept of quality of life raises the issue of adapting the conditions of living spaces to meet people's needs, expectations, and demands. The aim of this study was to establish an integrated and comprehensive framework for evaluating the quality of life in a regeneration case in Turkey through empirical research conducted at the neighborhood level. Data were collected from 359 households in the regenerated neighborhood of Akpinar, in the city of Ankara, using a questionnaire to inquire about the quality of life. The methodological framework of the study included a theory-based choice of indicators identified in a comprehensive literature review, including economic, ecological, physical, and social aspects of an urban environment, and an analysis of the relationship of the indicators to quality of life. Despite the diverse literature on urban environmental quality, there is no uniform, generally accepted conceptual framework to measure quality of life. Therefore, in this research, a mix of qualitative and quantitative analysis was adopted to assess the quality of life of the residents with respect to their housing and urban environment. The findings suggested that modern quality of life requires understanding the social, political, spatial conditions, and needs of residents. Based on the findings of the study, policy recommendations were developed to enhance quality of life at the neighborhood level from a space-sensitive perspective.Article Citation - WoS: 7A Housing Satisfaction Study in an Area of Urban Transformation: The Case of the Turk-is Apartment Blocks(2017) Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; Özdemir, Suna Senem; 50343; 25219; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaBu çalışmada bir işçi kooperatifi tarafından inşa edilmiş, Ankara Altındağ Belediyesi Altınpark Mahallesi sınırları içinde bulunan Türk-işBlokları’nda konut memnuniyeti ve kentsel dönüşüme ilişkin eğilim incelenmiştir. Book Part Kent Sosyolojisine Giriş (Introduction to Urban Sociology)(2017) Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; 50343; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaConference Object Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 1Urban Conservation Policies and Plans for a World Heritage Site Case: Antique Pergamon City and its Multi-Layered Cultural Landscape(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2017) Tuncer, Mehmet; Tunçer, Mehmet; 127698; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaIzmir's Pergamon (Bergama) Antique City and Its Multi-Layered Cultural Landscape entered the UNESCO World Heritage List with the participation of 21 countries in the 38th World Heritage Committee Meeting held in Doha, Qatar's capital in between 15 - 25 June 2014. All the efforts have been made carry this unique antique city to the UNESCO Heritage List at 2014. As an Urban Conservation Planner, I had a change of preparing the FIRST Conservation Aimed Plans and urban designs for Urban and Archaeological Sites of Pergamon together with my team, in the years between 1992-94. We prepared conservation aimed plans for all of the areas of Acropolis, Middle City and Ottoman period urban conservation areas. Urban and archaeological sites of Pergamon the ancient city today, which is over two thousand years old, where scientists, archaeologists, architects, art historians, urban planners, sculptors and similar arts and culture, men talk about admiration, write about and write praises, face to face some deterioration and destruction. As a conservation planner working on Pergamon since 1992, I' will concentrate the following results and conclusions; 1. Urban and Archaeological Sites in Turkey are generally in danger of destruction because of lack of public awareness and lack of sufficient monetary funds and administrative organisations. 2. In the Case Pergamon; this problem mentioned above are already defeated by the local and central governmental bodies. Unfortunately this success costs time and money, as well as more losess in the urban and archaeological areas. Especially loss in old Ottoman Houses and open archaeological sites. 3. The Paper will be aim to handle the governmental policies about the conservation, the inefficiencies in planning and approval of conservation aimed plans.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 6Factors affecting post-disaster location choices of businesses: an analysis of the 1999 earthquake(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017) Orhan, Ezgi; Orhan, Ezgi; 34038; Şehir ve Bölge PlanlamaDespite global policies advocating risk reduction and community level recovery, post-disaster implementations usually focus on households, but fail to focus on businesses in spatial terms. Due to the lack of appropriate policy and tools, businesses often make their own location choices as part of their recovery strategy. In view of this, this study aims to establish the factors affecting the location choices of businesses challenged by disasters in the absence of any specific spatial strategies designed for them. In order to determine these factors, empirical research was conducted in Adapazari, Turkey on 232 firms selected as a result of a stratified random sampling procedure. According to the analysis of the results, the most notable impacts on business location choices after a disaster shock are associated with occupancy status, education level, and extent of damage. In line with these findings, the impacts of business location choices are discussed to highlight the role of businesses in spatial decisions.
