Article Citation - WoS: 2The relationship among leadership style, sex of leader, and sex of evaluator in the evaluation of leadership behavior(Turkish Psychologists Assoc, 2011) Ugurlu, Ozanser; Uğurlu, Ozanser; Hovardaoglu, Selim; PsikolojiThe purpose of the article was to investigate the relationships among leadership style, sex of leader, and sex of evaluator in the evaluation of leadership behavior in a student sample from Turkey. In order to reach the goal, leadership style and sex of leader were manipulated to prepare four vignettes as autocratic female leader, democrat female leader, autocratic male leader, and democrat male leader. The participants were 386 university students from Middle East Technical University (199 males and 187 females; M=21.74; SD=1.56). After reading one of the vignettes, the participants evaluated the leader by filling out the Evaluation of Leadership Behavior Scale. A 2 (sex of leader: female - male) X 2 (leadership style: autocratic - democrat) X 2 (sex of evaluator: female - male) ANOVA was performed on the evaluation of leadership behavior. Results demonstrated that there was a significant main effect of leadership style. As expected, participants evaluated democratic leader more positively than autocratic leader. In addition, there was a significant two-way interaction between leadership style and sex of evaluator, suggesting that male participants evaluated democratic leader less positively than female participants and that male participants evaluated autocratic leader more positively than female participants. Finally, there was a significant three-way interaction. Both male and female participants evaluated autocratic female leader more negatively than democratic female leader. Further, as compared to male participants, female participants evaluated both democratic male leader and democratic female leader more positively. Article Citation - WoS: 29Citation - Scopus: 28Oral Trail Making Task as a Discriminative Tool for Different Levels of Cognitive Impairment and Normal Aging(Oxford Univ Press, 2013) Bastug, G.; Ozel-Kizil, E. T.; Sakarya, A.; Altintas, O.; Kirici, S.; Altunoz, U.The Trail Making Test (TMT) is a useful measure of executive dysfunction in elderly subjects. This study aims to investigate the discriminative validity of the oral version of the TMT (OTMT), which can be administered to subjects with visual or motor disabilities, in elderly patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI; n = 30), Alzheimer's disease (AD; n = 30), and healthy controls (HCs; n = 25). The WAIS-R Digit Span Backwards Subscale, written form of the Trail Making Task, the Clock Drawing Test, the AD Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale, and the OTMT were also administered to all participants in order to examine the concurrent validity of the OTMT. The OTMT part B discriminated between patients with MCI, AD, and HC correctly. The OTMT completion time was not correlated with age, but was negatively correlated with education. In conclusion, the OTMT (mostly part B) is a valid and practical measurement tool for different levels of cognitive impairment, especially for patients with visual or motor disabilities for whom the classical written form is not feasible.Article Citation - WoS: 2The mediator effects of positive and negative affectivity on the relationship between optimism-pessimism and satisfaction withlife(Hacettepe Univ, 2013) Ugurlu, Ozanser; Uğurlu, Ozanser; PsikolojiThis study examined the mediation effects of positive and negative affectivity on the relationship between optimism/pessimism and satisfaction with life among university students. Participants were 95 female and 151 male undergraduate students (N = 246). Participants ranged in age from 18 to 26 with a mean of 21.09 (SD = 2.34). Participants completed Life Orientation Scale (LOT), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and Life Satisfaction Scale. Results of correlational analyses demonstrated that the association between optimism and pessimism was -.40. Optimism was significantly associated with PA (r = .40), NA (r = -.26), and satisfaction with life (r = .36). Similarly, pessimism was significantly correlated with PA (r = -.26), NA (r = .39), and satisfaction with life (r = -.30). Finally, optimism had statistically significant direct and indirect links (by means of positive affectivity) with satisfaction with life, whereas pessimism only had statistically significant direct link with life satisfaction.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Misinterpretations of Intrusions, Obsessive Beliefs and Thought Control Strategies in Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder(Cumhuriyet Univ Tip Fak Psikiyatri Anabilim Dali, 2013) Yorulmaz, Orcun; Baştuğ, Gülbahar; Bastug, Gulbahar; Tuzer, Verda; Goka, Erol; 48292; PsikolojiObjective: Misinterpretations of intrusive experiences are suggested to play critical role in the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Some faulty belief domains are also assumed to contribute to the immediate misappraisal of intrusions and thus, patients with OCD try to control their thoughts with various thought control strategies. This study aims to examine these cognitive concepts among Turkish patients with OCD and comparatively review the psychometric characteristics of three instruments in clinical samples. Methods: The sample of the study was constituted of patients with OCD and any other anxiety disorders and undergraduate university students as control group. An instrument set on immediate misinterpretations, beliefs, control strategies, responsibility attitudes, fusions of thoughts and actions, thought suppression, OCD symptoms, self-esteem and personality characteristics was administered to the sample. Results: Having acceptable reliability values, instrument tools of immediate interpretations, beliefs and thought control methods were found to be higher in OCD patients. These three factors were found to be significantly associated with other relevant cognitive correlates, while they were not related to some other factors such as psychoticism. Conclusion: These findings show that misinterpretations of intrusions, beliefs and control methods are also valid concepts in Turkish clinical samples that live in a different cultural context, and the self-report instruments of these cognitive factors were shown to display satisfactory psychometric properties.Article Citation - WoS: 32Citation - Scopus: 35Attentional Control is Partially Impaired in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome(Wiley, 2013) Tulek, Baykal; Atalay, Nart Bedin; Atalay, Nart Bedin; Kanat, Fikret; Suerdem, Mecit; 102366; PsikolojiObstructive sleep apnea syndrome is associated with executive cognitive impairment. An important question is whether impairment in executive functioning in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is independent of dysfunction in attention. Attentional control is a subcomponent of executive functioning that is mediated by frontal lobe processing. In the current study, we investigated whether attentional control is deficient in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Attentional control processes were investigated through conflict adaptation and conflict frequency paradigms. These neuropsychological paradigms were assessed by using the Simon, Flanker and Stroop tasks. We additionally analysed post-error slowing data within these tasks. Error processing is another index of cognitive control that is mediated by frontal lobe functioning. Our sample consisted of 14 healthy adults and 24 patients with untreated moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Results indicated that attentional control is partially dysfunctional among patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Attentional control processes were deficient when focal attention (Flanker task) processes were involved, but were intact when observed using the Simon and Stroop tasks. A non-significant trend in post-error slowing data suggested that error processing, assessed with the Flanker task, was diminished among patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. These results support the view that obstructive sleep apnea syndrome leads to some amount of frontal lobe dysfunction, and that attentional control and error processing might be particularly affected by obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.Article Citation - WoS: 5Investigation of the Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Form of Subjective Memory Complaints Questionnaire(Gunes Kitabevi Ltd Sti, 2013) Ozel Kizil, Erguvan Tugba; Baştuğ, Gülbahar; Duman, Berker; Altintas, Ozge; Kirici, Sevinc; Bastug, Gulbahar; Baran, Zeynel; Altunoz, Umut; 48292; PsikolojiIntroduction: Amnestic type of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is characterized by the presence of subjective memory complaints and impairment of memory tests. This study aims to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish Version of the Subjective Memory Complaints Questionnaire (SMCQ). Materials and Method: The study sample consisted of 45 MCI patients and 44 healthy elderly controls. The SMCQ is a 14-item, "yes-no" questionnaire which evaluates the severity of subjective memory complaints. The discriminant validity of SMCQ was evaluated by comparing the scores of the two groups. For concurrent validity, the correlations between SMCQ and two widely-used cognitive screening tests (MMSE and ADAS-Cog) were calculated. ROC analysis was performed to test the diagnostic validity. For reliability analysis, internal consistency was calculated. Results: SMCQ scores of the patients were higher than the controls. SMCQ scores of the subjects were positively correlated with ADAS-Cog and negatively correlated with MMSE scores. Cronbach's value was 0.83. ROC analysis yielded a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 66% (cut-off=4.5). Area under the curve was 0.843. Conclusion: SMCQ is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used for the assessment of SMC in elderly patients. However, community based studies should be carried out for suggesting SMCQ as a screening tool.Article Prejudice against homosexuality and locus of control(Çankaya Üniversitesi, 2013) Uğurlu, Ozanser; 166201; PsikolojiThe purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between prejudice against homosexuality, internal-external locus of control, sex differences and social contact. A total of 198 university students from various Turkish universities participated in this study. The mean age of the participants was 21.14 (SD = 2.38). The participants filled Hudson and Ricketts’ 25-item Attitudes toward Homosexuality Scale, Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, and demographic variables including sex differences, social contact and age. The prejudice against homosexuality were only correlated with the sub-factors of external locus of control namely belief in fate, meaninglessness of effortfulness, and belief in chance. The performed ANOVA presented that the main effects of the level of external locus of control, sex differences, and social contact were only statistically significant, but there were no interactions between them. Regression analysis showed that belief in fate was the only significant predictor of the prejudice against homosexualityConference Object Citation - WoS: 7A scale for the assessment of hyperfocusing in attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder(Elsevier Science Bv, 2013) Ozel-Kizil, E.; Demirbas, H.; Bastug, G.; Kirici, S.; Tathan, E.; Kasmer, N.; Baskak, B.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Quadruple fixed point theorems for nonlinear contractions on partial metric spaces(Univ Politecnica Valencia, Editorial Upv, 2014) Karapınar, Erdal; Karapinar, Erdal; Tas, Kenan; Taş, Kenan; 19184; 4971; MatematikThe notion of coupled fixed point was introduced by Guo and Laksmikantham [12]. Later Gnana Bhaskar and Lakshmikantham in [11] investigated the coupled fixed points in the setting of partially ordered set by defining the notion of mixed monotone property. Very recently, the concept of tripled fixed point was introduced by Berinde and Borcut [7]. Following this trend, Karapmar[19] defined the quadruple fixed point. In this manuscript, quadruple fixed point is discussed and some new fixed point theorems are obtained on partial metric spaces. Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Verbal fluency deficits in patients with schizophrenia, psychotic bipolar disorder and their unaffected relatives(Elsevier, 2014) Baskak, B.; Ozel-Kizil, E. T.; 48292; PsikolojiArticle Effects of paternalistic and transformational leadership on follower outcomes(2014) Köse, Asli Göncü; Aycan, Zeynep; Johnson, Russell E.; 166202We investigated the motivations through which paternalistic (PL), and transformational (TL) leadership styles of managers were associated with employees’ organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). PL is common in Eastern cultures, and may be as effective as TL, which is more common in Western cultures, to elicit positive employee outcomes such as OCB. We showed that in Turkish cultural context, both leadership styles enhanced trust in leaders, and trust, in turn, enhanced the intrinsic motivations of employees to perform OCB. PL and TL were related to OCB through different extrinsic motivations. TL increased the perception of instrumentality of OCB for leaders and for work group members which was associated with actual performance of OCB. PL enhanced employees’ motivation to manage their impression which, in turn, was positively related to their OCB.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 12Does Perceived Social Support Buffer the Negative Effects of Type C Personality on Quality of Life of Breast Cancer Patients?(Springer, 2014) Bozo, Ozlem; Yılmaz, Tuğba; Tathan, Ece; Yilmaz, Tugba; PsikolojiThe present study investigated possible Type C personality-quality of life (QOL) relationship, and the moderating role of perceived social support in this relation among 101 postoperative breast cancer patients. Participants were from different cities in Turkey but receiving treatment in the capital, Ankara. Obtained data were analyzed by moderated regression analysis. According to the results, Type C personality was not related to the QOL of participants, however, higher perceived social support was associated with better QOL in patients. Also, perceived social support moderated Type C personality-QOL relation. Accordingly, patients high on Type C personality and perceived social support had the highest QOL. In contrast, patients high on Type C personality and low on perceived social support had the lowest QOL. Findings, as well as the strengths and limitations of the study, were discussed in the light of the relevant literature. As a possible clinical implication, enhancement of social support networks of the patients were suggested.Article The effect of agitation on caregivers’ burden in patients with dementia(2014) Özel Kizil, Erguvan Tuğba; Altintafi, H. Özge; Bafituğ, Gülbahar; Durmaz, Nazli; Altunöz, UmutIntroduction: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of agitation on caregiver relatives’ subjective burden together with other possible factors such as depressive symptoms, cognitive functions, duration of dementia, and caregivers’ age, education and gender. Materials and Method: The participants were 49 patients with dementia (mean age: 76.5; SD: 5.6) and their caregivers. Standardized Mini Mental Test and Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia were administered to the patient. Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory, Informant Questionnaire of Cognitive Decline in the Elderly and Zarit Burden Scale were administered to the ca-regivers. Linear regression analysis was used to examine the effects of the variables on caregiver burden. Results: There was neither a significant difference between gender and type of caregiver in terms of Zarit Burden Scale points, nor a significant correlation between Zarit Burden Scale scores and Standardized Mini Mental Test, Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, age and education of the patient, education of the caregiver or duration of dementia. Significant correlations between Zarit Burden Scale scores and caregivers’ age, Informant Questionnaire of Cognitive Decline in the Elderly and Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory scores were found. Linear regression analysis showed a relationship only between agitation and caregiver burden. Conclusion: Patients’ agitation frequency which was assessed by Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory was the basic factor in determining subjective caregiving. In addition to psychopharma-cological treatment, psychosocial interventions for caregivers are effective. In our country, dayca-re and homecare services, as well as supportive and educative psychosocial programs including interventions for agitation, should be improved. Article Employees’ relative deprivation for females and supervisory commitment: The mediating roles of interpersonal justice, informational justice, and perceived empathy(2014) Göncü Köse, Aslı; 166202The present study aims to test a model derived from a conceptual framework that attempted to explain negative interactions among supervisor-employee dyads from a Relative Deprivation Theory (RDT) and justice-related perspective. Employees’ perceptions of fraternal (group) deprivation on part of females compared to males in their organizations were suggested to be related to their interpersonal and informational justice perceptions as well as their perceptions of supervisors’ empathy. Employees’ perceptions of justice and empathy, in turn, were suggested to be positively associated with overall supervisory commitment. Moreover, the moderating effects of employee gender on the proposed relationships were investigated. The data was collected from 114 employees who were enrolled in undergraduate classes in a Southwestern university in USA. The proposed model as well as the alternative models were tested by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique using AMOS 6.0 software. The findings revealed that proposed mediated model was supported by the data for the independent variable of employee perceptions of “affective” relative deprivation for females in the organization and for the dependent variables of “affective supervisory commitment” and “continuance supervisory commitment”. However, employees’ gender did not have a moderating effect on the relationships in the mediated model that was supported by the data. The results are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical implications as well as the suggestions for future research.Article Personality measurement and faking: an integrative framework(Çankaya Üniversitesi, 2014) Göncü, Aslı; 166202Kişilik testi yapmak, kurumsal ortamlardaki seçme kararlarında yaygın olarak uygulanan popüler bir yöntemdir. ‹kinci amaç, Rosse, Stecher, Miller and Levin’in seçme kararlarında kişilik testlerinin yanıltılmasının etkilerini araştırdığı çalışmaları ayrıntılı olarak tartışmaktır. Son olarak, örtük kişilik ölçümleri, kişilik araştırmalarında tepki değiştirmenin etkilerine yönelik çıkarımların örnekleri ve gelecekte yapılacak olan araştırmalara yönelik önermelerle birlikte tanıtmak hedeflenmiştir.
