Conference Object A myth? Sustainable tourism as a tool for rescuing traditional spaces: A case study from Turkey, Ankara(2012) Özcan, Zühal; Ayalp, Nur; Aktaş, G. Güner; İç MimarlıkA myth? Sustainable tourism as a tool for rescuing traditional spaces: a case study from Turkey, Ankara Z. Ozcan, N. Ayalp & G. Guner Aktas TOBB University of Economics and Technology, Turkey Abstract The concept of social sustainability should be considered and investigated in developing the conditions of traditional urban spaces. Sustainable tourism can be a basic tool for the physical conservation of architectural heritage. The traditional spaces regain considerable visual and economical value with tourism investments but the social reactions are to the contrary. In the content of the study, two different characteristically spaces were selected in the city of Ankara. The selected urban core was composed of 19th century Ottoman dwellings called \“Hamamonu” which have not been considered for a long time. The local municipality developed a project to rehabilitate a part of this area with the help of tourism and left the other part untouched \“Hamamarkasi”. Social, physical and spatial aspects will be questioned and the opinions of respondents will be output about the rehabilitation project. Keywords: sustainable tourism, traditional space, hamamönü, hamamarkası. 1 Introduction The oldest urban core of a settlement covers special spaces that help to differentiate it from the others with its original spatial character. In developing countries like Turkey, they are \“lost” urban spaces turned to squatter zones, composed of \“unpopular” traditional dwellings. Deterioration of the physical space is also the indicator of social change. The new housing zones lead to a social migration from the traditional urban core, leaving the place to lower income groups unaware of their possession responsibilities, resulting in the further collapse of the architectural indoor and outdoor spaces. In several cases, it is observed that not only the physical spaces but also the user profile changes Sustainable Tourism V 297Article A New Composıte Learnıng And Teachıng Method To Achıeve Success For The Academıcally Unsuccessful Students(2013) Gökhan, Çiğdem BerdiThis article is about adult students’ learning of Interior Architecture design course and efficacy and efficiency of new method of instructional design experience employed in 2011-2012 spring semester. However a common decision making in terms of preservation can be made in buildings that are located within the same compound or region that have a cultural continuity and that sustain similar typologic values. The hammams that are located within the boundaries of the Southeastern Anatolia Region remain as local and rear buildings depending on the climate of the region, the materials that are used and their construction techniques despite bearing common characteristics with many others that have been built in Anatolia. Forty hammams in the region have been reviewed in terms of their typologies, architectural values and the status they had been preserved in within the scope of this article and certain suggestions have been developed for the purposes of establishing common decisions in their preservation and their passing on to the future.Article A Study on Determining the Criteria that Parents Consider When Buying Children's Room Furniture(2019) Çelebi Yazıcıoğlu, N. The research was conducted in a real open-plan office environment to include the open-office experience of subjects to the analysis. STM Bilkent Office was selected as the case, and 40 available open-office occupants were participated to the study. The experiment consists of two main phases. In the first phase, acoustical simulation of the site was done, to derive distribution graphs for speech related room acoustics parameters. In the second phase, occupants’ computer-based task performances were tested under three different sound environments, which are continuous noise, speech and masked speech. According to statistical analysis of the performance test, and the acoustical properties of the case STM, suggestions for renovation were discussed. It was found that effects of intelligible speech on occupants’ task performance are only psychological, because it is significant that there is no difference between results of performance test. However, all of the occupants respond to the questionnaires that speech sound environment was the most distracting one. Proposal for renovation was given to minimize the effects of intelligible speech on occupants for preventing the long-term effects on occupants’ health.Article An analysis on mixed-use high-rise residential complexes in Istanbul as to their prioritization of evaluation categories in LEED(Çankaya University Press, 2018) Süzer, Özge; Yılmaz, Meltem; 27418; İç MimarlıkThe most globally used environmental assessment tool; LEED, offers the certification of projects according to the evaluation criteria of green buildings. Furthermore, emerging mixed-use high-rise residential complexes (MHRC) in metropolitans like Istanbul draw attention, as they help reduce carbon emissions by providing various facilities in one entity for its residents. Yet, they also have negative effects on resources, due to excessive energy consumptions owing to their high user capacities. The objective of this study is to analyse LEED certified MHRC in Istanbul, regarding their prioritization of evaluation categories. LEED’s database revealed nine certified MHRC under the NC scheme. Based on their gained points, mean ranks ( ) of categories were calculated, which indicated the priorities given by this building typology in Istanbul. The obtained category priority order was then compared to the one implied by LEED’s assigned category weights. It was found that EA gained much lower attention than needed.Article An innovative safety education method for architectural faculties to promote a culture of prevention in line with a “Vision Zero approach”(2022) Akan, Aslı Er; Yeşilbağ, Damla; Alevsaçanlar, Yeliz; Karaman, Gülşah D.; Şehir ve Bölge Planlama; MimarlıkOccupational safety and health (OHS) education in universities has an important role in developing and improving safety cultures in the workplace. Safety education is essential for improving necessary OSH skills, culture and knowledge, so do architects, urban planners, interior architects whose duties are regarded as the design, planning and execution of construction projects in high-risk sectors. As a consequence, there has been increasing recognition that safety education courses in the architecture faculties should have participative learning methods and resources. In order to increase preparedness for any potential future health crises parallel to the “Vision Zero” approach in work-related deaths, a new EU Strategic Framework was announced by the European Commission. The course described and proposed here aimed to raise awareness about OHS by teaching risks related to working environments, basic issues, basic legislation within the scope of OHS. It also aimed to cover professional liability with respect to OHS, and risks and hazards in the construction sector, as well as helping participants to analyze and evaluate the risks in workplace. This article’s primary objective is to identify an innovative safety education model of the “occupational health and safety course” with a “Vision Zero” approach.Conference Object Analysis of Kızılcasar Village in terms of Vernacular Architecture(2018) Bal Koçyiğit, Filiz; Yıldırım, Nazlı Nazende; Dökmeci Yörükoğlu, Papatya Nur; 214925; İç MimarlıkIn this study, the structure of the settlement areas in the historical texture and the measures that could be used in the history of using environmental energy and energy in the residential architecture in the most effective way were investigated and the effects of these measures on life style were examined both in urban and residential dimensions. The study was sampled in Kızılcaşar Village of İncek district in Ankara, which is located in the Central Anatolia Region, which has a hot and dry climate. Article Assessment of Spatial Factors Influencing User Satisfaction in Quick-Casual Restaurants(2022) Saleh Ahmadi, Reda R.; Akbay, Saadet; 21742Users' evaluations of the restaurant environment are influenced by various design factors and their level of satisfaction and comfort, of which colour is an essential component. Several studies in the literature have demonstrated the influence of colour in interior design on human behaviour and psychology in various contexts. This study investigates the spatial factors influencing users' satisfaction in quick-casual restaurants. User satisfaction was measured using four major elements: product, service, price, and physical environment. This study used a questionnaire to assess user satisfaction in four quick-casual restaurants in Ankara, Turkey. The emphasis on colour effects was intended to evaluate the physical environment of the restaurants. The study results, which included the participation of 120 restaurant users, show that participants rated the various restaurant environments in a variety of ways. The assessments provided by the participants are statistically tested for significant differences based on gender, frequency of restaurant usage, and colour properties for both user satisfaction and the evaluation of the physical environment using one-way between groups of variance (ANOVA) (p < 0.05). The findings show that demographics have a limited influence on restaurant user satisfaction, though it varies depending on colour properties. Additionally, the results suggest that the environmental colours of quick-casual restaurants significantly influence user satisfaction, overall satisfaction levels, and the evaluation of the physical environmentsArticle Assessment of the energy savings and CO2 emissions reduction of glass structures through alternative demolition scenarios(2016) Çelebi, Gülser; Tuna, Merve; Veer, Frederic; 2919Glass is a material that has been significantly increasing its role in architecture in recent decades. Although glass is a material that can survive long, as can be seen from the archaeological pieces in many museums, in practice the glass structures that built nowadays have a finite life time. A notorious case is the original New York Apple Cube, which was removed and replaced within several years of original completion.Whatever the eventual lifetime of the structure, there will be a point where the structure needs to be demolished. This introduces critical questions about the relation between ecological impact and the demolition methods and procedure. This paper looks at the eco-impact of different end of life scenarios of glass structures, using the Haarlem glass cube as a well-documented example to determine the differences between various ends of life scenarios. Conference Object City versus suburb: The effects of neighborhood location on place attachment and residential satisfaction(2017) Aksel, Elif; İmamoğlu, Çağrı; 275155; İç MimarlıkArticle Color Perception in Correlated Color Temperature of Led Lighting(2018) Akbay, Saadet; Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; 21742; 237970; İç MimarlıkColor and light are inseparable entities that are the essential design factors in the field of interior architecture. When the light changes, the perceived color appearance of a surface within an interior environment also changes. The change in color perception is not only related to the type of a light source or the intensity of illumination, but also to the correlated color temperature (CCT) of a light source. The aim of this study is to understand how different CCTs of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting influence the color perception. A study is conducted to compare the perceptive color tendencies for inherent colors under two different CCTs of LED lighting, i.e. warm (2700º K) and cool (4000º K). In the study, Natural Color System (NCS) is utilized as a color notation system to reveal the possible tendencies and patterns concerning the relationship between the inherent and perceived colors. The general tendencies for the perceived colors revealed similar patterns in the nuance (i.e. blackness and chromaticness) color area for each inherent color and showed dispersion on the hue color area under the CCTs of both 2700º K and 4000º K LED lighting.Book Part Colour harmony: The ideality of pleasurableness(2017) Akbay, Saadet; Joao João Durão, Maria; 21742The search for the essence of colour harmony has a long tradition that, being a quest for aesthetic values, remains a contemporary question insofar as it addresses the interrelated issues of both beauty and pleasure. Colour harmony has been discussed in terms of two different points of view. As a measurement of aesthetics, the researches of colour harmony are based on the discovery of its systematic rules by identifying the relationship between colours and its aesthetic value in beauty and harmony. The proportional and orderly arrangements of colours and their relations to mathematics are the main concerns of this first approach. As a measurement of emotion, colour harmony is regarded as subject matter of pleasure, subjective feeling which is peculiar to an individual. Relying on the second approach, many studies have been conducted to identify the reasons behind why colour combinations are perceived as beautiful, pleasant, and harmonious. Thus, this paper is a retrospective review of the literature of colour harmony, its theories, and principles considering the two approaches. The assumption is that, in either case, colour harmony is grounded in a search for the ideality of pleasurableness.Conference Object Cultural Soundscape Evaluation on Re-Functionalized Historical Sites with Adaptive Reuse Approach: Ankara Citadel Case(2021) Dökmeci Yörükoğlu, Papatya Nur; Urak, Zehra Gediz; Erçakmak Osma, Uğur Beyza; 214925; 1487; Şehir ve Bölge Planlama; İç MimarlıkCultural soundscaping is a research field that aims preservation and evaluation of the cultural heritage sites’ sound environments, as they are the intangible values that act as a crucial part of the place identity. Different aspects of sounds’ interaction with humans and places have provided that value of soundscape has become significant in heritage sites. The semantic values hidden in the intricate content of soundscapes within an urban context and their cultural values are in the scope of this study. In this sense, a methodological framework is introduced that is merged from the studies on cultural soundscape that are present in the literature. Accordingly, a pilot study was conducted as a case study based on the presented framework. The old city centre of Ankara, where new functions have been assigned with restoration projects in an adaptive reuse approach, and its heritage value from the perspective of its lost and changed soundscape, especially during and after the restoration were considered. Soundwalks and listening points on the pre-identified routes and semantic sound analysis were conducted as a pilot study in order to evaluate the restoration process during construction and after construction period of the sound environment at Ankara Citadel region. The importance of observing, surveying, managing, and preserving the historic sound environment of such historic heritage sites and its importance for the urban habitual life and society are discussed.
