This international ESM study is a collaborative effort of over 60 interdisciplinary researchers from around the world in the "Coping with Corona" (CoCo) project. The study comprises trait-, state-, and daily-level data of 7490 participants from over 20 countries (total ESM measurements = 207,263; total daily measurements = 73,295) collected between October 2021 and August 2022. We provide a brief overview of the theoretical background and aims of the study, present the applied methods (including a description of the study design, data collection procedures, data cleaning, and final sample), and discuss exemplary research questions to which these data can be applied. Since the 20th century, research on feeding and eating disorders has tried to give some explanations of various eating behaviors, such as starving because of thoughts about being overweight or non-stop binge eating by the individual, relational, or social factors. However, they are inadequate to fully explain the psychopathological and cognitive factors underlying feeding and eating disorders. The complex behavioral pattern behind eating disorders can lead to impairments in people’s attention, memory, and metacognitive processes. Certain higher-order cognitive mechanisms such as problem solving, reasoning, and decision making are impaired in individuals suffering from eating disorders, especially anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, compared to healthy individuals. Several researches aimed to find out evidence that may recover these impairments or that may lead to preventive measures for the risk of developing eating disorders. Veri, Türkiye’de yedi farklı alanda (psikoloji, hukuk, iktisat/işletme, mühendislik, siyaset bilimi, tıp ve eğitim bilimleri) henüz eğitime başlamış 659 (359 kadın) üniversite öğrencisinden toplanmıştır. Grupların değişkenlerdeki ortalamaları KÜ ve BB kişilik özelliklerinin bağımlı değişken olduğu 2 (cinsiyet)×7 (bölüm) varyans analizi yöntemiyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Sonuçlar, iktisat/işletme ve mühendislik öğrencilerinin Makyavelizm skorlarının psikoloji öğrencilerinin skorlarından daha yüksek olduğunu; ayrıca, mühendislik, iktisat/işletme ve siyaset bilimi öğrencilerinin psikopati skorlarının psikoloji öğrencilerinin skorlarından yüksek olduğunu göstermiştir. Psikoloji öğrencilerinin nevrotizm skorlarının, mühendislik, iktisat/işletme ve siyaset bilimi öğrencilerinin skorlarından daha yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. When looking at the antecedents of PSMU, being young has been found to be a risk factor for PSMU. In addition to the benefits of technological advances in education and training, rapid technological developments may also result in problematic behaviors, especially among children and young. Recently, possibilities brought by technology and more widespread use of technology by young people have created a new concept, namely, cyberbullying. The present study aims to examine the effects of attachment anxiety and avoidance on PSMU and cyberbullying as with the partial mediating effects of the Dark Triad personality traits, angry rejection sensitivity, and anxious rejection sensitivity among adolescents. In general, the findings supported the proposed theoretical model. Araştırmanın verileri 49 genç, 46 yaşlı olmak üzere toplam 95 gönüllü yetişkinden toplanmıştır. Genel zekâ puanı, Raven Standart Progresif Matrisler (RSPM) testi kullanılarak ölçülmüştür. Katılımcıların bellek performansını ölçmek için, Kelime Kökü Tamamlama (KKT) görevi kullanılmıştır. Örtük bellek görevinde, katılımcılardan kendilerine ilk üç harfi sunulan kelime köklerini akıllarına gelen ilk kelimeye tamamlamaları istenmiştir. Ayrıca, örtük bellek performansıyla karşılaştırma yapabilmek ve örtük ve açık bellek arasındaki ayrımı belgelemek için açık bellek performansı da ölçülmüştür. Örtük ve açık bellek performansını ayrı ayrı ölçmek için aynı KKT görevi kullanılmış, ancak bu görev farklı yönergeler altında uygulanmıştır. Faktöriyel varyans analizi (ANOVA) bulgularına göre, yaşın genel zekâ puanları üzerindeki temel etkisi istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur. Pearson momentler çarpımı korelasyon hesaplamaları sonucunda, ilerleyen yaşla birlikte RSPM testinden alınan toplam doğru puanın azaldığı, testi tamamlama süresinin ise arttığı görülmüştür. Örtük KKT görevi puanları ile RSPM testi toplam doğru puanları arasındaki ilişki ve açık KKT görevi puanları ile RSPM testi toplam doğru puanları arasındaki ilişki de istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuş, aralarındaki ilişkilerin pozitif olduğu kaydedilmiştir. Buna karşın, örtük KKT görevi puanı ile RSPM testi tamamlama süresi ve açık KKT görevi puanı ile RSPM testi tamamlama süresi arasındaki ilişki istatistiksel olarak anlamlı değildir. Mevcut çalışma bulguları, örtük KKT görevi ölçümünün genel zekâyla olan güçlü ilişkisini göstermektedir. In the last decades, unemployment rates have increased substantially in Turkey; yet, factors and mechanisms that play a role in experiencing psychological symptoms among unemployed individuals are not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of personality characteristics on psychological symptoms among unemployed Turkish adults and to test the mediating role of rumination as a dysfunctional cognitive strategy. The sample consisted of 217 unemployed Turkish adults who completed self-report measures on neuroticism, external locus of control, rumination, and psychological symptoms. The results of the structural equation modeling indicated that rumination partially mediated the relationship between personality variables (i.e., neuroticism and external locus of control) and psychological symptoms, thus verifying the hypothesis of the study. The direct paths from trait neuroticism and external locus of control to psychological symptoms were also significant. Results revealed that a tendency to attribute future outcomes to external factors and an increased tendency to experience negative emotions are associated with engaging passively in rumination, which in turn predicts psychological symptoms. However, more evidence is necessary if these results are generalisable to multimedia learning environments. Considering these needs, the study has the goal to examine the effect of emotional arousal on multimedia learning. Fifty-seven participants were presented with instructional materials with either high- or low-arousing words and pictures in an experimental study. The eye movements of participants were recorded while they studied the instructional materials to examine the online processes during learning. The results suggest that emotional arousal enhanced recall and transfer scores. The eye-tracking results demonstrate that emotional arousal attracted attention. The results of the mediation analysis suggest that fixation time on emotional pictures as an indicator of attention mediated the relationship between emotional arousal and learning outcomes. An important question is whether impairment in executive functioning in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is independent of dysfunction in attention. Attentional control is a subcomponent of executive functioning that is mediated by frontal lobe processing. In the current study, we investigated whether attentional control is deficient in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Attentional control processes were investigated through conflict adaptation and conflict frequency paradigms. These neuropsychological paradigms were assessed by using the Simon, Flanker and Stroop tasks. We additionally analysed post-error slowing data within these tasks. Error processing is another index of cognitive control that is mediated by frontal lobe functioning. Our sample consisted of 14 healthy adults and 24 patients with untreated moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Results indicated that attentional control is partially dysfunctional among patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Attentional control processes were deficient when focal attention (Flanker task) processes were involved, but were intact when observed using the Simon and Stroop tasks. A non-significant trend in post-error slowing data suggested that error processing, assessed with the Flanker task, was diminished among patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. These results support the view that obstructive sleep apnea syndrome leads to some amount of frontal lobe dysfunction, and that attentional control and error processing might be particularly affected by obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.Article Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 1Bullying as a Group Process: Investigation of Participant Roles in Terms of Social Status and Gender(Turkish Psychologists Assoc, 2015) Topcu, Aysun Ergul; Donmez, Ali; 173556This study mainly aims to test the participant roles approach on Turkish sample suggesting that bullying is a group process. In this regard, students' ways of involving in bullying and the extent to which children are aware of their participant roles and whether these participant roles differentiate in terms of gender and social status was investigated. A total of 774 students (384 females and 390 males), from 6(th), 7(th) and 8(th) grades of 11 different primary schools in Ankara participated in the study. The results showed that 74% of all children involved in one of the participant roles as bully (11.5%), assistant-reinforcer (10.9%), defender (21.1%), outsider (20.9%) and victim (9.7%). The examinations of the relations between self-reported and peer-reported scores of participant roles revealed that children were aware of their roles in the bullying situations, however, they significantly underestimated their roles in bully and assistant-reinforcer scales while overestimated their roles in the defender and outsider scales. Boys are more actively involved in bullying process than girls; boys participated most frequently in the roles of bully, assistant-reinforcer and victim while girls participated most frequently in the defender and outsider roles. In terms of the findings related to social status, victims were the least accepted and most rejected group among their peers although they did not differentiate from bullies and assistant-reinforcer in this sense. Even virtual reality simulators provide alternatives to improve education and assessment in neurosurgery programs and allow for several objective assessment measures, there are not many tools for assessing the overall performance of trainees. This study aims to develop and validate a tool for assessing the overall performance of participants in a simulation-based endoneurosurgery training environment. Methods A training program was developed in two levels: endoscopy practice and beginning surgical practice based on four scenarios. Then, three experiments were conducted with three corresponding groups of participants (Experiment 1, 45 (32 beginners, 13 experienced), Experiment 2, 53 (40 beginners, 13 experienced), and Experiment 3, 26 (14 novices, 12 intermediate) participants). The results analyzed to understand the common factors among the performance measurements of these experiments. Then, a factor capable of assessing the overall skill levels of surgical residents was extracted. Afterwards, the proposed measure was tested to estimate the experience levels of the participants. Finally, the level of realism of these educational scenarios was assessed. Results The factor formed by time, distance, and accuracy on simulated tasks provided an overall performance indicator. The prediction correctness was very high for the beginners than the one for experienced surgeons in Experiments 1 and 2. When non-dominant hand is used in a surgical procedure-based scenario, skill levels of surgeons can be better predicted. The results indicate that the scenarios in Experiments 1 and 2 can be used as an assessment tool for the beginners, and scenario-2 in Experiment 3 can be used as an assessment tool for intermediate and novice levels. The aim of the second study is to validate the GDST psychometrically. Methods: In the first study participants were assessed with GDST. Sample comprised of 400 Turkish university students and video game players (54.0% male, mean age 24.30 years, SD=6.83) that was enrolled online. In the second study the sample (n=326; 60.1% male, mean age 23.54 years, SD=4.44) was similar with the first study. Participants were assessed with GDST, the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and the Gambling Motives Questionnaire (GMQ). Results: In the first study, according to the exploratory factor analysis a single component accounted for 64.02% of total variance. The scale was internally consistent with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.93, thus considered as reliable. In the second study, confirmatory factor analysis showed that GDST's factor structure (i.e., the unidimensional structure) was satisfactory. Positive correlations between GDST and the number of self-reported gambling type, SOGS and GMQ scores demonstrated adequate convergent and criterion-related validity. Also the GDST had a Cronbach's alpha of 0.92 in this sample. Materials and Method: The study included 100 patients diagnosed as dementia, according to the DSM-IV-TR. The CMAI-T was administered to the patients' caregivers via face-to-face interviews. The Standardized Mini Mental State Examination (SMMSE) was used to assess cognitive functions. The severity of depression and the functional state of the patients were assessed using the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD) and the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ). Principal component analysis and varimax rotation were used to determine the factor structure of the CMAI-T. Results: Factor analysis of the CMAI-T indicated a 3-factor structure: physically aggressive agitation, verbal agitation, and physically non-aggressive agitation. In 92% of the patients there >= 1 was agitation behavior during the previous 2 weeks. The CMAI-T total and factor scores were negatively correlated with the SMMSE scores, and positively correlated with the CSDD and the FAQ scores. Conclusions: The CMAI-T yielded 3 factors (physically aggressive agitation, verbal agitation, and physically non-aggressive agitation), which indicated the scale had construct validity Agitation behaviors were associated with cognitive dysfunction, symptoms of depression and general level of functioning. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increase in mental health problems and psychological distress in uninfected healthy people. The present study aimed to examine the mediator role of maladaptive cognitive emotion regula-tion strategies in the relationship between cognitive fle-xibility and COVID-19 related psychological distress experienced during the current pandemic. Method: The sample consisted of 351 young adults (86% female and 14% male) who were not infected with COVID-19 aged between 18 to 25 years old. Participants completed the self-report questionnaires, including the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and COVID-19 Related Psychological Distress Scale. Mediation analysis estimated total, indi-rect, and direct effects between cognitive flexibility and COVID-19 related psychological distress. Results: The correlation analyses showed that cognitive flexibility -control dimension was negatively associated with both COVID-19 related psychological distress and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Also, maladap-tive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and COVID-19 related psychological distress was found to be posi-tively correlated. In the study sample, the results of the bootstrap mediation indicated that maladaptive cogni-tive emotion regulation strategies, including self-blame, acceptance, rumination, catastrophizing, and blaming others, fully mediated the relationship between cogni-tive flexibility -control and COVID-19 related psycholog-ical distress. Discussion: Our findings would help psy-chological interventions designed for COVID-19 unin-fected healthy people who have lower-level cognitive flexibility -control dimension by highlighting the promi-nence that the fewer people use maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies, the less they feel COVID-19 related psychological distress.Article Citation - Scopus: 0Does A Correlation Exist Between Fluid Intelligence And Creativity?(Cyprus Mental Health Institute, 2020) Yazihan, N.T.; 276238The aim of the study was to investigate the associations between fluid intelligence and creativity among young adults. The sample consisted of 26 university students who were recruited through convenience sampling method. The Raven Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) 9 item-form and a divergent thinking test were used to measure fluent intelligence and creativity, respectively. In order to examine the associations between creativity and fluent intelligence correlational analysis was applied. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient revealed that there was no significant relationship between the tests of divergent thinking and RSPM total score. On the other hand, the results showed a significant positive correlation between the RSPM visuospatial factor and both fluency (r=.47, p<.01) and flexibility (r=.41, p<.01) dimensions of the divergent thinking test. As a result, we suggest that certain basic processes regarding fluid intelligence (e.g. visual spatial reasoning) and creativity operate through common and similar mechanisms. Future studies could investigate the association between these constructs by using neuro-imagining method and focus on how these skills can be integrated into real life situations. © 2020, Cyprus Mental Health Institute. Participants were from different cities in Turkey but receiving treatment in the capital, Ankara. Obtained data were analyzed by moderated regression analysis. According to the results, Type C personality was not related to the QOL of participants, however, higher perceived social support was associated with better QOL in patients. Also, perceived social support moderated Type C personality-QOL relation. Accordingly, patients high on Type C personality and perceived social support had the highest QOL. In contrast, patients high on Type C personality and low on perceived social support had the lowest QOL. Findings, as well as the strengths and limitations of the study, were discussed in the light of the relevant literature. In the present study, face-to-face roadside interviews were conducted to investigate the reasons of speeding among Turkish drivers at six different data collection times in two different cities. A structured interview was administered to collect data from a total of 3317 and 1559 drivers in Ankara and Afyon cities, respectively. Results from the two cities consistently revealed that drivers’ self-reported speeding frequency was partially determined by gender and age. Also, perceiving speeding as a cause of crashes was associated with lower frequency of speeding. Finally, thinking that speed tickets are a means for increasing government income and that it would be safe to exceed the speed limit if driving “safely” was positively associated with frequency of speeding.
