Effects of LED Lighting on Visual Comfort with Respect to the Reading Task
(2017) Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Memikoğlu, İpek; 237970
Lighting systems in interior architecture need to be designed according to the function of the space, the type of task within the space, user comfort and needs. Desired and comfortable lighting levels increase task efficiency. When natural lighting is inadequate in a space, artificial lighting is additionally used to support the level of light. With the technological developments, the characteristics of light are being researched comprehensively and several business segments have focused on its qualitative and quantitative characteristics. These studies have increased awareness and usage of artificial lighting systems and researchers have investigated the effects of lighting on physical and psychological aspects of human in various ways. The aim of this study is to research the effects of illuminance levels of LED lighting on user visual comfort. Eighty participants from the Department of Interior Architecture of Çankaya University participated in three lighting scenarios consisting of 200 lux, 500 lux and 800 lux that are created with LED lighting. Each lighting scenario is evaluated according to six visual comfort criteria in which a reading task is performed. The results of the study indicated that LED lighting with three different illuminance levels affect visual comfort in different ways. The results are limited to the participants and questions that are attended and used in this study.

Evaluating effectiveness of led and oled lights on user visual comfort and reading performance
(2021) Avcı, Ayşe Nihan; Memikoğlu, İpek; 237970
In interior architecture, one of the main purposes of light is to create comfortable and functional spaces according to user needs. Light provides individuals to understand, get information for visual tasks and it affects how they experience and behave in the environment. Desired illuminance levels are required for visual comfort and task efficiency. This study analyzes the effects of different illuminance levels of light emitting diode (LED) and organic light emitting diodie (OLED) lights on user visual comfort and reading performance. An experiment was con-ducted with eighty interior architecture students at Çankaya University. Six lighting scenarios were created with LED and OLED lighting sources that assessed six visual comfort criteria. The experimental setting consisted of three different illuminance levels, as 200, 500 and 800 lx. The results revealed that different illuminance levels were found more comfortable for different visual comfort criteria, but the illuminance level of 500 lx was visually more comfortable than the other illuminance levels. The illuminance level of LED 200 lx was visually more comfortable than LED 800 lx. OLED light was found visually more comfortable than LED light. In addition, participants read slower under the illuminance level of LED 200 lx. It was concluded that illuminance levels of light effect user’s visual comfort and reading performance. This study provides a basis to recommend the preferred illuminance level for LED and OLED light during a reading performance. © 2021, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture. Experience with clay in the basic design education
(2015) Memikoğlu, İpek; Sümengen Berker, Olgu; Tolun, Elif
Basic Design is a first year fundamental course that is taught in different disciplines such as architecture, design and fine arts. Basic Design introduces the basic concepts and principles of design and enables students to develop mental and manual skills to cope with design problems. It allows students to structure and articulate two and three dimensional spatial compositions in different media. Clay as a plastic material was chosen to develop their creativity in making 3D abstract design works. For four semesters clay was integrated into the Basic Design courses of Interior Architecture and Architecture departments of Çankaya University in Ankara, Turkey. During this period, 270 students produced 3D design works consisting of clay and/or metal based on different design concepts. The aim was to broaden their viewpoints while designing with such a plastic material and create sensual artistic works by using an extra material that contrasted with the plasticity of clay. The final products showed that students were able to use clay and/or metal as effective tools in representing their design ideas. The outcome of this design experience showed that students can utilize ceramic/clay in their design projects.

Utilization of Second Life as a Tool for Spatial Learning in Interior Architecture
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2014) Memikoglu, Ipek; Memikoğlu, İpek; 19105
With increase in computer usage. three-dimensional (3D) virtual environments (VEs) have become new areas for navigation and spatial learning. Second Life (SL) has become one of the most popular 3D VEs that is used as a learning environment. This study focuses on the issue of spatial learning during virtual navigation in a multi-level desktop VE designed in SL. The usability of SL as a tool for spatial learning in interior architectural design is investigated by analyzing virtual navigation paths, gender differences and sense of presence. The study is conducted with 90 interior architecture students studying at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. Results indicated that SL can be an effective tool for individuals to learn an environment and for interior architects to improve their designs by learning from the navigation behaviors of the users.
