| gperson.biography | Mehmet Resit Tolun was born on May 19, 1960, in Ankara, Turkey. He studied at TED Ankara College between 1969-1977. As a Shell Petroleum Company scholarship student, he received his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics with Computing in 1981, M.Sc. in Computing in 1982, and Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1985 from the University of Kent, Canterbury in England, UK. He joined Middle East Technical University (METU), Department of Computer Engineering, as an Assistant Professor in 1987 and was appointed as an Associate Professor in 1991. In 1998 Dr. Tolun left METU for a sabbatical leave at the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Computer Engineering Department, in Northern Cyprus, where he was employed until 2003. He obtained the title of full professor in 1999 and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at EMU. Between 2004-2011 he served as the Head of the Computer Engineering Department at Çankaya University in Ankara. Dr. Tolun was the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at TED University in Ankara between 2011-2013. He retired from his faculty position at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Aksaray University in 2017 where he also served as the Vice Dean. During 2018-2020 he worked as the Head of the Computer Engineering Department at Baskent University in Ankara. Professor Mehmet R. Tolun is currently a faculty member and Department Chair at Çankaya University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Software Engineering. Numerous master's theses and doctoral dissertations have been completed in various countries using his novel inductive learning algorithm (ILA). He pioneered the establishment of the IEEE Computer Society Chapter in Turkey and served as the President of the IEEE Turkey Section in 1998-1999. Professor Mehmet R. Tolun is the recipient of the IEEE 3rd Millennium Medal. He is currently a member of the AAAI (Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence), Sigma Xi-The Scientific Research Honor Society and a senior member of the IEEE. | |
