Abstract
Technology, as a defining feature of the contemporary era, is a dynamic structure that continuously evolves and transforms. The concepts of information and information technologies are frequently addressed together within the context of this technological transformation, and access to information has become easiest and fastest through the internet. The widespread use of the internet and digital tools in nearly all aspects of daily life has led to profound changes in individuals' professional and social lives, giving rise to the concept of the 'digital citizen,' characterized by specific competencies in digital environments. Although digitalization processes provide numerous advantages for both employers and employees, it is considered that changing work structures and organizational processes have an impact on job satisfaction. In this context, the present study aims to determine the digital citizenship levels of academic and administrative staff working in higher education institutions—one of the primary domains where information is intensively produced and utilized—and to examine the effects of digital citizenship sub-dimensions on job satisfaction. Within the scope of the study, a Digital Citizenship Scale consisting of 7 dimensions and 49 items was developed based on the nine elements of digital citizenship proposed by Mike Ribble (2011). A survey was conducted with 275 academic and administrative staff employed at foundation universities in Ankara. Of the participants, 51.1% were male and 48.9% were female; female participants scored significantly higher than male participants in the dimensions of digital ethics and responsibility, and digital institutional opportunities. It was determined that as the education level of participants increased, significant differences emerged in digital citizenship competencies. Furthermore, significant differences were identified across job roles (academic vs. administrative) in the dimensions of digital privacy and awareness, digital ethics and responsibility, digital security and conscious e-commerce, and digital well-being. The highest correlations with job satisfaction were found in the dimensions of digital institutional opportunities and digital ethics and responsibility. However, other sub-dimensions namely digital security and conscious e-commerce, digital literacy, digital well-being, digital access and participation, and digital privacy and awareness did not have a statistically significant effect on job satisfaction. In the final model, three independent variables 'Digital Ethics and Responsibility,' 'Digital Well-being,' and 'Digital Institutional Opportunities' were included. The combined effect of these three variables on job satisfaction was found to be statistically significant, indicating that these dimensions of digital citizenship significantly influence employees' levels of job satisfaction.
