Bruno Taut's Ütopia 'The City Crown' (die Stadtkrone) and Its Reflections in Ankara

Abstract

Ütopya, Thomas More'un eserinde tanımlandığı haliyle hem 'hiçbir yer' hem de 'iyi bir yer' anlamına gelir; bir düş olan ütopya, aynı zamanda geleceğe dair bir umut ve sistematik bir akıl yürütmenin ürünüdür. Ütopyacı düşlerle ideal kent tasarımlarının kurgulandığı zeminde, mimarlık üretimi de salt bina inşa etmesinin ötesinde kuramsal ve kavramsal bir disipline dönüşür. Bugün Türkiye'de, Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi'nin mimarı olarak bilinen Bruno Taut (1880-1938), 20. yüzyılın başındaki kırılmalarla biçimlenen modernleşme sürecinde mimarlığı fiziksel üretimin ötesinde, toplumu dönüştüren bir sanat olarak konumlandırmıştır. Bu bağlamda kristal bir mimarlığın kentleri taçlandırararak ideal kenti ve toplumu inşa ettiği 'Şehrin Tacı' ütopyasını kurgular. Almanya, Sovyetler Birliği, Japonya ve Türkiye ekseninde şekillenen yaşamı boyunca, literatürde 'ütopyacı' ve 'realist' dönemleriyle ele alınan Taut'un 'eylemleri ve söylemleri' ütopyacılığın kuramsal çerçevesinden değerlendirildiğinde, 'yıldızlı gök' ile 'ahlak yasası' arasında kurulan sürekliliği ve bu ikiliğin iç içe geçişini yansıtır. Bu nedenledir ki 1919'daki Şehrin Tacı ütopyasındaki arayışı 1938'deki Kamutay Projesi önerisinde Ankara için bir taç olarak tezahür eder.

Utopia as defined in Thomas More's book, means both 'no place' and 'a good place'; as such, it is not only a dream or a fantasy, but also a projection of hope for the future and the product of systematic reasoning. In the context where utopian dreams inform the design of ideal cities, architectural production transcends mere construction and becomes a theoretical and conceptual discipline. Bruno Taut (1880–1938), widely recognized as the architect of the Faculty of Language, History and Geography in Ankara, envisioned architecture during the early twentieth century's transformative period not just as the creation of physical structures, but as a socially transformative art form. Within this framework, he imagined his utopia of 'The City Crown' as a vision in which crystalline architecture crowns cities, constructing the ideal society through symbolic form. Throughout his life—shaped by the geopolitical contexts of Germany, the Soviet Union, Japan, and Turkey—Taut's actions and writings, often analyzed in the literature as belonging to 'utopian' and 'realist' phases, reflect a continuity and interweaving of the 'starry heavens above' and the 'moral law within' when viewed through the theoretical lens of utopianism. For this reason, the quest he articulated in his 1919 'City Crown' utopia re-emerges in 1938 in his Turkish Parliament (Kamutay) proposal as a symbolic crown envisioned for Ankara.
