Article Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0Americanization of Political Campaigns: A Comparison of the Cases of Forza Italia and the Young Party(Turkiye Orta Dogu Amme Idaresi Enstitusu, 2010) Turk, Hasan Bahadir; Türk, Hasan Bahadır; 18664; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerSimilar to political institutions and structures, political campaigns have also undergone dramatic transformations. The Americanization of political campaigns, which are characterized by certain peculiarities, such as the personalization of politics, weakening of party organizations, wide use of media channels in the political marketing process, need for specialization, primacy of opinions over ideologies and conceptualization of citizens as policy consumers, is a by-product of these dramatic transformations. This paper aims to compare Forza Italia and the Young Party through the Americanization of political campaigns with special emphasis on the connection between the transformation of political campaigns and the crisis of representative democracy.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4An empirical survey of consumer ethnocentrism in Kazakhstan and the preference of consumers on imported products(Ahmet Yesevi Univ, 2017) Nakip, Mahir; Nakip, Mahir; Gokmen, Aytac; Gökmen, Aytaç; 118963; Uluslararası Ticaret ve FinansmanThe reality of globalization declines the frontiers for cross border international trade and investments as well as functions as a means to converge the consumer needs and expectations on a global base. The convergence of the expectations of consumers is considerably beneficial for international businesses in their international marketing activities. However, this issue does not realize in every country or regional market. Yet, consumer ethnocentrism is a profound obstacle for international businesses which emphasis nationalistic sentiments, pride and the rejection of any product or idea that is made in another country without any rationale reasoning. Thus, this study is aimed at researching the subject of consumer ethnocentrism in the Central Asian Turkish Republic of Kazakhstan. The results indicate that there is not a strong relation between ethnocentric perceptions and product necessity in Kazakhstan. Also, sub-dimensions of ethnocentrism have different correlation levels with each imported products. In addition, religious and moral values are not effective factors in explaining the variation in imported products.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 6Does ADR listing affect the dynamics of volatility in emerging markets?(Charles Univ-prague, 2010) Umutlu, Mehmet; Umutlu, Mehmet; Altay-Salih, Aslihan; Akdeniz, Levent; 38254; 178057; İşletmeThis paper analyzes the time-series variation in the return volatility of non-US stocks from emerging markets that are cross-listed on US exchanges. Unlike previous studies in the cross-listing literature, return volatility is modeled using conditional heteroscedaslicity models. We find that firms' exposure to risks such as local and global market betas remain unchanged after cross-listing. Moreover, we do not identify notable changes in the dynamics of the volatility of cross-listed stocks after cross-listing except for leverage effects. We further show that the mean level of conditional variance is not affected after cross-listing. Thus, our results provide counter-evidence to the belief that foreign investor participation drives volatility upward.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 3Institutional change in the Turkish film industry (1950-2006): social exclusion impact of globalization(Ankara Haci Bayram veli Univ, 2011) Kalemci, R. Arzu; Ozen, Sukru; 42537; 26234This study examines the impact of globalization on the organization of production chain in the Turkish film industry. Adopting the historical institutionalist approach, the study examines the institutional change in the organization of production, distribution and exhibition chain in the Turkish film industry for the period of 1950-2006. The main finding of the study is that as a result of opening up the industry to the foreign direct investment in 1989, the organization of production chain evolves from a network structure dominated by regional distributors to a hierarchical network structure dominated by the big US film companies. Another finding is that the multiplex type of film theaters particularly located in big cities emerges as a supplementary form to the theaters with single screen that has been widespread in the previous period. This leads to an increase in the number of cities without theaters. The study emphasizes that the social exclusion manifested by increasing 'theaterlessness' is inherent within the multiplex type of film theater diffused through globalization.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Mahalanobis distance under non-normality(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2010) Tiku, Moti L.; Islam, M. Qamarul; Qumsiyeh, Sahar B.We give a novel estimator of Mahalanobis distance D2 between two non-normal populations. We show that it is enormously more efficient and robust than the traditional estimator based on least squares estimators. We give a test statistic for testing that D2=0 and study its power and robustness properties.Article Citation - WoS: 59Citation - Scopus: 62Multiple linear regression model under nonnormality(Taylor & Francis inc, 2004) Islam, MQ; Tiku, MLWe consider multiple linear regression models under nonnormality. We derive modified maximum likelihood estimators (MMLEs) of the parameters and show that they are efficient and robust. We show that the least squares esimators are considerably less efficient. We compare the efficiencies of the MMLEs and the M estimators for symmetric distributions and show that, for plausible alternatives to an assumed distribution, the former are more efficient. We provide real-life examples.Article Citation - WoS: 27Citation - Scopus: 29Nonnormal regression. i. skew distributions(Taylor & Francis inc, 2001) Islam, MQ; Tiku, ML; Yildirim, FIn a linear regression model of the type y = thetaX + e, it is often assumed that the random error e is normally distributed. In numerous situations, e.g., when y measures life times or reaction times, e typically has a skew distribution. We consider two important families of skew distributions, (a) Weibull with support IR: (0, infinity) on the real line, and (b) generalised logistic with support IR: (-infinity, infinity). Since the maximum likelihood estimators are intractable in these situations, we derive modified likelihood estimators which have explicit algebraic forms and are, therefore, easy to compute. We show that these estimators are remarkably efficient, and robust. We develop hypothesis testing procedures and give a real life example.Article Citation - WoS: 42Citation - Scopus: 47Nonnormal regression. II. Symmetric distributions(Taylor & Francis inc, 2001) Tiku, ML; Islam, MQ; Selçuk, ASSalient features of a family of short-tailed symmetric distributions, introduced recently by Tiku and Vaughan [1], are enunciated. Assuming the error distribution to be one of this family, the methodology of modified likelihood is used to derive MML estimators of parameters in a linear regression model. The estimators are shown to be efficient, and robust to inliers. This paper is essentially the first to achieve robustness to infers. The methodology is extended to long-tailed symmetric distributions and the resulting estimators are shown to be efficient, and robust to outliers. This paper should be read in conjunction with Islam et al. [2] who develop modified likelihood methodology for skew distributions in the context of linear regression.Article Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 1Reading the Emergence of Turkish Nation-State Through the Concept of Habitus(Ahmet Yesevi Univ, 2011) Turk, H. Bahadir; Türk, Hasan Bahadır; 18664; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerThis study aims to investigate the emergence of the nation-state in Turkey and read this process through Pierre Bourdieu and Norbert Elias' concept of habitus. In so doing, first of all, the concept of habitus will be explored. The debates concerning the process of the emergence of the nation-state in Turkey and whether the concept of habitus is fruitful will also be discussed. This study underlines the theoretical opportunities of the concept of habitus, particularly, from the angle of the debates concerning the emergence of the Turkish nation-state and Turkish nationalism. On this axis, this study shows that there is a clear link between Turkish nation-state formation and the Turkish national habitus.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Rethinking The Relationship Between Leader and Mass Through Political Theology(Ankara Haci Bayram veli Univ, 2019) Turk, H. Bahadir; Türk, Hasan Bahadır; 18664; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerThis study aims to analyze the relationship between leader and mass through political theology. In so doing, the study is structured into two major sections. The first section focuses on the concept of political theology. The second section discusses the relationship between mass and leader from a historical perspective and with reference to political theory. The study argues that rethinking the relationship between mass and leader through political theology provides an opportunity to make sense of the nature of this relationship.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Seasonality in Household Demand for Meat and Fish: Evidence from an Urban Area(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2005) Fidan, Halil; Klasra, Mushtaq Ahmad; Klasra, Mushtaq Ahmad; Uluslararası Ticaret ve FinansmanBu çalışma, Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS)'i kullanarak, farklı mevsimlerde et ve balık için hane halkı talebine etkili faktörlerin tahmininde çıkarımlarda bulunmaktadır. This paper examines whether knowledge spillovers are prevalent among ASEAN-5, focusing on the issues of which channels and which sources are the potential drivers of total factor productivity. The findings reveal that the key spillover channels are exports and non-capital imports coming from source countries such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, the G7 countries. The institutional quality plays an instrumental role in increasing total factor productivity through foreign direct investment, especially when the spillovers originate from the OECD and the G7. Ezgi; Sakarya, A. Orcun; 50343; 19342Bologna Process studies in Cankaya University's Interior Architecture Department (INAR), Turkey have been initiated in 2008. The goal of this study is to explore students' perceptions about the new programme outcomes framed with the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework and to provide a set of guidelines for the Bologna Process to be implemented. A questionnaire including semi-structured questions is conducted in the data collection process. Content analysis method is used in order to examine students' perceptual outcomes. The findings of the study display that students' perceptions underline the importance of the acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences in social, economic and managerial dimensions of the professional life. Results also reveal the need of students for the acquisition and use of communicative, collaborative and interdisciplinary aspects of the profession and their expectations on both theoretical and practical contents of INAR courses. Furthermore, this study which mainly followed a student-cantered approach concluded that it is also possible to generalize new programme outcomes through the active participation of students.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Symmetric and asymmetric relationship between maritime transportation and foreign trade volume(inderscience Enterprises Ltd, 2021) Dinc, Dilek Temiz; Karamelikli, Huseyin; 52039In this study, the short and the long-run relationship between maritime transportation and foreign trade volume and also the linear and nonlinear characteristics of this relationship were investigated. Linear relations between maritime transportation and foreign trade volume were analysed by the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, and nonlinear relations were analysed by the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model by using monthly data between 2004 and 2018 in Turkey. According to the results, it was revealed that only the short-run asymmetry and long-run symmetry model was statistically valid and that results should be taken into consideration.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1The crime of genocide in international law and underlying social structures of the crime: Rwanda case(Uluslararasi Iliskiler Konseyi dernegi, 2008) Coban, Ebru; 105587Genocide is a crime which is defined under international law in the twentieth century and could not come about without the ideological, bureaucratic power of a modern state with its sanctions and modern discourses on identities and modern classifications. With a non-modern picture but with modem techniques of governing Rwanda was a place that genocidal killings occurred and is a place of a breaking case for modem theories. Rwanda has modern state characteristics in terms of monopoly of use of violence, giving orders and providing obedience of its people, surveillance, classification and registration of its people, and keeping discourses. Moreover, Rwandan culture that gives great importance to obedience and Rwandan geography that is so suitable to surveillance become additional factors. In that sense, Rwandan governments could influence to daily life of the people even to the smallest details of anyone. All factors provided a suitable base for the crime of genocide.Article Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0The problem of checking the political power in the tradition of siyasat-nama: the case of Nushatu's-Selatin(Turkiye Orta Dogu Amme Idaresi Enstitusu, 2017) Turk, Hasan Bahadir; Türk, Hasan Bahadır; 18664; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerThe problem of how to be able to check the political power lies at the very heart of the historical debates over politics. This problem is part and parcel of another vital political problem that can be best described as the necessity of setting limits to the power of rulers. Accordingly, one might argue that checking the political power and setting limits to it are not basically and simply the same thing. This paper, moving from this assumption, attempts to shed some light upon the problem of checking the political power through the lenses of an Ottoman bureaucrat of the sixteenth century, namely, Mustafa Ali of Gallipoli. In so doing, the paper focuses on a text written by Mustafa Ali in 1581. The major argument of this paper is that Mustafa Ali's text, Nushatu'sSelatin (Advices to Sultans), which is an example of Siyasat-nama genre of books, deals with the problem of checking the political power with a particular emphasis upon three certain principles: Justice, fear of God and merit.Article Citation - Scopus: 0The rapprochement between Turkey and the EU: The transformation process in the strategic perceptions from the 1999 Helsinki Summit to the 2003 Iraq War(International Relations Council of Turkey, 2006) Gözen, R.; Gözen, Ramazan; 3610; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerThis article analyses the rapprochement process between Turkey and the EU which has been developing since the 1999 Helsinki Summit and especially in the wake of the US invasion of Iraq. As a result of differing perceptions of Turkey and the EU in the post Cold War, the Turkey-EU membership process had faced a deep "structural" crisis. However, after some important changes in the years from 1999 to 2003, Turkey and the EU rediscovered, and approached each other in such a way that it is incomparable with the past. The basic character of this rapprochement is the strategic transformation in the perceptions.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 14Trade openness and industrial growth: evidence from Nigeria(Savez Ekonomista Vojvodine, 2017) Adamu, Fahad Muhammad; Dogan, Ergun; 43080This study examines the long-run and short-run relationship between industrial production and trade openness in Nigeria during the period from 1986 to 2008 by using quarterly data. It employs the ARDL bounds testing methodology developed by M. Hashem Pesaran, Yongcheol Shin, and Richard J. Smith (2001). The results of both the long-run analysis and the short-run error correction model (ECM) indicate that trade openness has a significant and positive impact on industrial production. The Toda-Yamamoto causality analysis shows that there is one-way Granger causality, running from trade openness to industrial production.
