Conference Object Quality Cost Modeling Process for Production Systems(1) Şentarlı, İnci; İşletmeArticle Nonnormal Regression.I. Skew Distributions(2001) Islam, M. Qamarul; L. Tiku, Moti; Yildirim, F.In a linear regression model of the typey¼ Xþe, it is oftenassumed that the random erroreis normally distributed. Innumerous situations, e.g., whenymeasures life times or reac-tion times, etypically has a skew distribution. We considertwo important families of skew distributions, (a) Weibull withsupport IR:ð0,1Þon the real line, and (b) generalised logisticwit hsupport IR:ð 1,1Þ. Since the maximum likelihoodestimators are intractable in these situations, we derivemodified likelihood estimators which have explicit algebraicforms and are, therefore, easy to compute. We show that theseestimators are remarkably efficient, and robust. Symmetric distributions(Taylor & Francis inc, 2001) Tiku, ML; Islam, MQ; Selçuk, ASSalient features of a family of short-tailed symmetric distributions, introduced recently by Tiku and Vaughan [1], are enunciated. Assuming the error distribution to be one of this family, the methodology of modified likelihood is used to derive MML estimators of parameters in a linear regression model. The estimators are shown to be efficient, and robust to inliers. This paper is essentially the first to achieve robustness to infers. The methodology is extended to long-tailed symmetric distributions and the resulting estimators are shown to be efficient, and robust to outliers. This paper should be read in conjunction with Islam et al. [2] who develop modified likelihood methodology for skew distributions in the context of linear regression.Article Citation - WoS: 27Citation - Scopus: 29Nonnormal regression. i. skew distributions(Taylor & Francis inc, 2001) Islam, MQ; Tiku, ML; Yildirim, FIn a linear regression model of the type y = thetaX + e, it is often assumed that the random error e is normally distributed. In numerous situations, e.g., when y measures life times or reaction times, e typically has a skew distribution. We consider two important families of skew distributions, (a) Weibull with support IR: (0, infinity) on the real line, and (b) generalised logistic with support IR: (-infinity, infinity). Since the maximum likelihood estimators are intractable in these situations, we derive modified likelihood estimators which have explicit algebraic forms and are, therefore, easy to compute. We show that these estimators are remarkably efficient, and robust. We develop hypothesis testing procedures and give a real life example.Book Part Prens Sabahaddin'in Düşünsel Kaynakları ve Aşırı-Muhafazakar Düşüncenin İthali(Sol Kitap, 2001) Kansu, Aykut; 531; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerBook Part 20. yüzyıl Başı Türk Düşünce Hayatında Liberalizm(2001) Kansu, Aykut; 5315; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerArticle Tarih Öğretiminde Tek Kişilik Akademi: Halil İnalcık(2002) Arı, Bülent; Aslantaş, Selim; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerBook Türk Denizcilik Tarihi(2002) Arı, Bülent; Arı, Bülent; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerArticle Cumhuriyet Döneminde Alternatif Batılılaşma Arayışları: 1945 Sonrası Muhafazakâr Modernleşmeci Eğilimler Üzerine Bazı Değinmeler(2002) Demirel, Tanel; 4812; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerBook Part Citation - WoS: 27Early Ottoman Diplomacy: Ad Hoc Period(Palgrave, 2003) Ari, Buelent; Arı, Bülent; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerArticle Citation - WoS: 34Citation - Scopus: 33The Turkish military's decision to intervene: 12 September 1980(Sage Publications inc, 2003) Demirel, T; Demirel, Tanel; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerThis article analyzes the Turkish military's decision to take over the government on 12 September 1980. It argues that just because the military believed itself to be a true guardian state, it easily considered intervention a legitimate solution. The perceived threats to the integrity of the Republican state posed by rampant terrorism were the key elements driving soldiers towards intervention. In retrospect, the military's willingness to learn from experience and the role played by civilians in encouraging the military to take over the reins of government are striking features of the whole episode. Article Multiple linear regression model under nonnormality(2004) Islam, M. Qamarul; Tiku, Moti L.We consider multiple linear regression models under nonnormality. We derive modified maximum likelihood estimators (MMLEs) of the parameters and show that they are efficient and robust. We show that the least squares esimators are considerably less efficient. We compare the efficiencies of the MMLEs and the M estimators for symmetric distributions and show that, for plausible alternatives to an assumed distribution, the former are more efficient. We provide real-life examples.Article Citation - Scopus: 10Effectiveness of SMEs in Turkish economy and agricultural industry sector(2004) Baykal, N.A.; Gunes, E.The latest developments and modulations in Turkish economy, adaptation process to European Union and entering into international markets, risks and uncertainties in these markets and some opportunities may affect SMEs in positive and negative aspects. In fact, new areas may open and some business sectors may slowly disappear. As part of the adaptation process with EU, SMEs deserve important order on the agenda while trying to enter international markets but are left to their fate in Turkey. In this article, the existing situations, problems and contributions of SMEs in industrial and agricultural sector to Turkish economy will be analysed, then policies that must be put in practice for more contribution to Turkish economy will be dwelt upon. Finally, solutions to these situations will be proposed. © 2004 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.Article Dilemmas of Turkish democracy: the encounter between Kemalist laicism and Islamism in 1990s Turkey(2004) Aydın, Ertan; Çolak, Yılmaz; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerBook Part Corporate Diversification and Internal Capital Markets: Evidence from the Turkish Business Groups(2004) Gönenç, Halit; Kan, Özgür Berk; Karadağlı, Ece C.; 17735We compare the performance of firms affiliated with diversified business groups with the performance of unaffiliated firms in an emerging market, Turkey. Our findings indicate that group affiliation improves firm's accounting performance, but not stock market performance. Furthermore, we find that firm's accounting (but not stock market) performance increases with the level of group diversification. Our results also indicate that having a group affiliated bank affects the accounting performance measures of the group firms positively, but the market value of the group affiliated firms negatively, supporting the misallocation of capital hypothesis. In addition, having a group affiliated media institution is found to affect the performance of the group firms positively. More importantly, we examine the frequency of seasoned equity issue offerings with the forms of cash (right and restricted right) issues and bonus issues to address the question of whether group affiliated firms create an internal capital market. We show that unaffiliated firms are more bound to external markets to raise capital while the affiliated firms use internal capital markets.
