When looking at the antecedents of PSMU, being young has been found to be a risk factor for PSMU. In addition to the benefits of technological advances in education and training, rapid technological developments may also result in problematic behaviors, especially among children and young. Recently, possibilities brought by technology and more widespread use of technology by young people have created a new concept, namely, cyberbullying. The present study aims to examine the effects of attachment anxiety and avoidance on PSMU and cyberbullying as with the partial mediating effects of the Dark Triad personality traits, angry rejection sensitivity, and anxious rejection sensitivity among adolescents. In general, the findings supported the proposed theoretical model. The results of the mediation analysis suggest that fixation time on emotional pictures as an indicator of attention mediated the relationship between emotional arousal and learning outcomes. An important question is whether impairment in executive functioning in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is independent of dysfunction in attention. Attentional control is a subcomponent of executive functioning that is mediated by frontal lobe processing. In the current study, we investigated whether attentional control is deficient in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Attentional control processes were investigated through conflict adaptation and conflict frequency paradigms. These neuropsychological paradigms were assessed by using the Simon, Flanker and Stroop tasks. We additionally analysed post-error slowing data within these tasks. Error processing is another index of cognitive control that is mediated by frontal lobe functioning. Our sample consisted of 14 healthy adults and 24 patients with untreated moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Results indicated that attentional control is partially dysfunctional among patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Attentional control processes were deficient when focal attention (Flanker task) processes were involved, but were intact when observed using the Simon and Stroop tasks. A non-significant trend in post-error slowing data suggested that error processing, assessed with the Flanker task, was diminished among patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Even virtual reality simulators provide alternatives to improve education and assessment in neurosurgery programs and allow for several objective assessment measures, there are not many tools for assessing the overall performance of trainees. This study aims to develop and validate a tool for assessing the overall performance of participants in a simulation-based endoneurosurgery training environment. Methods A training program was developed in two levels: endoscopy practice and beginning surgical practice based on four scenarios. Then, three experiments were conducted with three corresponding groups of participants (Experiment 1, 45 (32 beginners, 13 experienced), Experiment 2, 53 (40 beginners, 13 experienced), and Experiment 3, 26 (14 novices, 12 intermediate) participants). The results analyzed to understand the common factors among the performance measurements of these experiments. Then, a factor capable of assessing the overall skill levels of surgical residents was extracted. Afterwards, the proposed measure was tested to estimate the experience levels of the participants. Finally, the level of realism of these educational scenarios was assessed. Results The factor formed by time, distance, and accuracy on simulated tasks provided an overall performance indicator. The prediction correctness was very high for the beginners than the one for experienced surgeons in Experiments 1 and 2. When non-dominant hand is used in a surgical procedure-based scenario, skill levels of surgeons can be better predicted. The results indicate that the scenarios in Experiments 1 and 2 can be used as an assessment tool for the beginners, and scenario-2 in Experiment 3 can be used as an assessment tool for intermediate and novice levels. It can be concluded that forming the balance between perceived action capacities and skills is critical for better designing and developing skill assessment surgical simulation tools.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 16The Differential Associations of Functional and Dysfunctional Impulsivity With Driving Style: a Simulator Study(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2019) Ozturk, Ibrahim; Ozkan, Ttirker; Bicaksiz, PinarThe present study investigated the impulsivity and driving style link by measuring driver behaviors on the driving simulator. Previous studies examining this relationship mostly used self-report instruments to measure both impulsivity and driving related outcomes, therefore this study aims to test this association by using a relatively more objective measurement tool than self-report. Moreover, the associations of functional impulsivity dimension with driving style has been investigated, in addition to the dysfunctional impulsivity dimension, which has been predominantly studied in the literature. Finally, both general and driving context specific functional and dysfunctional impulsivity dimensions were included in the analyses of the current study. Eighty (40 women) young drivers (19-25) participated in the present simulator study, and functional and dysfunctional impulsivity dimensions yielded different patterns of associations with driver behavior measures on the simulator. For instance, functional impulsivity yielded significant associations with standard deviation of lateral lane position, while dysfunctional impulsivity was significantly associated with mean velocity. Eye-movements of the participants while driving on the simulator were also recorded and examined as an explorative effort. The findings are discussed with regard to previous research. Participants were from different cities in Turkey but receiving treatment in the capital, Ankara. Obtained data were analyzed by moderated regression analysis. According to the results, Type C personality was not related to the QOL of participants, however, higher perceived social support was associated with better QOL in patients. Also, perceived social support moderated Type C personality-QOL relation. Accordingly, patients high on Type C personality and perceived social support had the highest QOL. In contrast, patients high on Type C personality and low on perceived social support had the lowest QOL. Findings, as well as the strengths and limitations of the study, were discussed in the light of the relevant literature. It is proposed that insecure attachment styles (i.e., preoccupied, dismissing, and fearful attachment styles), rejection sensitivity, and the Dark Triad personality traits (i.e., Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy) are negatively associated with relationship satisfaction, which, in turn, is negatively related to social media addiction. The data were collected from 229 university students from 14 different universities in four different cities of Turkey. The results of the structural equation modeling analyses revealed that relationship (dis) satisfaction was a significant predictor of social media addiction; and also, it partially mediated the link of fearful attachment with social media addiction. Furthermore, the direct positive paths from fearful attachment, rejection sensitivity and psychopathy to social media addiction were significant. The study was conducted with online survey among 1010 volunteered university students in Ankara, people who are in the e-mail database of a company located in Istanbul that organizes e-sports tournaments and Turkish garners from gaming forums. Scale scores were higher among the group with high probability of insomnia (n = 200, 19.8%). Also risk of high probability of insomnia was 2.7 times higher among those with probable ADHD. In linear regression analysis, both inattentiveness and hyperactivity/impulsivity dimensions of ADHD were related with the severity of insomnia, together with severities of anxiety, depression, neuroticism and IAS. Similarly, presence of probable ADHD was related with the severity of insomnia in ANCOVA, together with severities of anxiety, depression, neuroticism and IAS. These findings suggest that the presence of probable ADHD and the severity of ADHD symptoms are related with the severity of insomnia, even after controlling the depression, anxiety, neuroticism and IAS, which are all related with the severity of insomnia, among young adults.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 12Impact of Information Bandwidth of In-Vehicle Technologies on Drivers' Attention Maintenance Performance: a Driving Simulator Study(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2018) Bicaksiz, Pinar; Unverricht, James; Samuel, Siby; Yamani, YusukePrevious research indicates that inexperienced drivers' ability to maintain their attention on the forward roadway during driving is poorer than experienced drivers, leading to more frequent, excessively long, off-road glances that elevate the risk of crashes. However, whether their poorer attention maintenance ability depends on complexities of in vehicle technologies has been underexplored. This study directly manipulated information bandwidth (easy or complex) of an in-vehicle monitor and asked twenty-four drivers aged 18-21 to perform a visual number judgment task with either 5 digits (easy) or 11 digits (complex), during simulated driving. Participants had to verbally respond within 15 s whether each string of presented digits contained more odd or even digits. Eye movements were recorded using an eye tracker. Results show that the drivers produced a greater number of off-road glances and longer summed excess glance durations under a 1.5-s threshold when the in-vehicle task imposed greater information processing demand. In practice, designers of in-vehicle technologies should consider information-processing demands of in-vehicle tasks required by the technologies to minimize the frequency of excessively long off-road glances during driving. In the present study, the Implicit Association Test (IAT) procedure was adapted to measure the implicit evaluations of driving skills. The performance of IAT and an explicit, self-report measure of driving skills were compared in predicting driver behaviors and performance. Ninetyone Turkish male drivers participated in the study. The results showed that the implicit test and the self-reported driving skills scale showed different patterns of relationships with the outcome measures in the regression analyses. In addition, the implicit measure of driving skills moderated the relationship between self-reported driving skills and some of the outcome measures used in the current study. These results support the need to use the implicit measures in addition to self-report measures to better understand drivers evaluations of their driving skills, which has the potential to influence their risky driving. BasakUsing qualitative and quantitative methodologies, in three consecutive studies with employed samples, we developed measures of workplace incivility, mobbing, and abusive supervision sensitive to the nuances of a non-Western context (i.e., Turkiye). In Study 1, we first conducted 15 focus groups (N = 149), identified culture-specific and universal themes underlying the focal mistreatment types, and developed the initial scales. We then pilot-tested (N = 427) and refined the scales using exploratory factor analytic procedures. In Study 2, confirmatory factor analyses (N range = 456-524) and associations between the new scales and their widely used counterparts (N = 353) yielded evidence for the construct validity of the scales. Study 2 also involved the development of short forms of relatively long incivility and abusive supervision scales. In Study 3 (N = 482), we first examined the extent to which the three scales were operationally distinct. Second, we examined the scales' ability to predict burnout and organizational commitment. Results supported operational distinctiveness as well as the criterion-related validity of the scales. A dominance analysis revealed that the three scales had equivalent contributions in explaining the two outcome variables, further justifying their distinctiveness. We argue that the use of present scales is not necessarily restricted to the Turkish context and may prove useful more broadly in other neo-traditional contexts.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 8Mediating Processes in the Relationships of Abusive Supervision With Instigated Incivility, Cwbs, Ocbs, and Multidimensional Work Motivation(Springer, 2023) Onaran, Sami Okan; Goncu-Kose, AsliWe examined how abusive supervision (AS) affected instigated workplace incivility, counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs), organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), and multidimensional work motivations (MWMs), in line with the Job Demands-Resources Model and Social Exchange Theory. We suggested that employees' identification with their workgroup moderates the link between AS and instigated incivility toward coworkers and that organizational identification partially mediates the association of AS with CWBs and OCBs. Furthermore, we hypothesized positive correlations between AS and external regulation as well as amotivation, consistent with the Self-Determination Theory. Finally, we predicted that job-related affective well-being would fully mediate the link between AS and autonomous work motivations while only partially mediating the link between AS and amotivation. Online surveys were used to collect data from 519 white-collar workers. The data revealed that AS was linked to a higher level of incivility toward coworkers. Furthermore, it was linked to both CWBs and OCBs, both directly and indirectly through organizational identification. Organizational identification mediated the associations between AS and MWMs as well. Finally, job-related affective well-being mediated the links of AS with external regulation, amotivation, and autonomous work motivations. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed as well as suggestions for future research.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 11Mindfulness as a Moderator in the Relation Among Core Belief Disruption, Rumination, Posttraumatic Symptoms, and Growth(Springer, 2021) Haspolat, Ayperi; Cirakoglu, Okan CemObjectives In the present study, we tested moderated mediation models where the moderator role of mindfulness and its subscales has an indirect effect of core belief disruption (CBD) on posttraumatic symptoms (PTS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) through intrusive (IR) and deliberate (DR) ruminations. Methods Two hundred forty-six individuals, ages ranging between 19 and 77, with traumatic experiences participated in the study. The data were collected by Traumatic Experience Screening List, Core Beliefs Inventory (CBI), Impact of Event Scale-Revised Form (IES-R), Event-Related Rumination Inventory, Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ). Results The moderator role of mindfulness was supported both for PTS and PTG. The analysis indicated that the indirect effect of CBD on PTS only through IR was moderated by mindfulness total score (MF-T) and nonreactivity (NR) subscales. The analysis revealed that the MF-T x IR interaction effect was statistically significant. The interaction effect was significant for only low and medium levels of MF-T. When the model was analyzed for PTG, it was observed that the indirect effect of CBD on PTG through IR and DR was moderated significantly only for describing (DES) subscale of mindfulness. In addition, the DES x IR interaction effect was significant only for medium and higher levels of DES. It was also observed that the DES x DR interaction effect was significant only for medium and high levels of DES. Conclusions Mindfulness and its components should be taken into consideration when assessing posttraumatic symptoms and growth.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 16Pain Perception, Distress Tolerance and Self-Compassion in Turkish Young Adults With and Without a History of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury(Springer, 2021) Tuna, Ezgi; Gencoz, TulinIndividuals with a history of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) tend to have altered pain perception and difficulty in regulating their emotions. Previous work on NSSI has relied heavily on retrospective self-report data and clinical Western samples. The present study explored pain perception, emotional reactivity, distress tolerance and self-compassion in a sample of non-clinical Turkish young adults with and without a history of self-injury by employing a multi-method, laboratory-based design. Participants were 70 Turkish young adults (34 with a history of NSSI and 36 controls). Pain was induced by the cold pressor test before and after a distressing card-sorting task. Skin conductance was recorded throughout the entire procedure. Measures of NSSI, emotion dysregulation and self-compassion were also administered. Although the groups were comparable in pain threshold and physiological reactivity to pain, participants with NSSI had increased pain tolerance and reported more subjective distress during the distressing task. Pain perception did not change as a function of distress and both groups were similar in physiological reactivity to distressing stimuli. Participants who self-injure reported less self-compassion and more difficulty in regulating emotions than controls. These findings illustrate that participants with a history of NSSI have altered pain perception and experience more subjective distress during a stressful task. Individuals who self-injure may benefit from interventions targeting emotion regulation and self-compassion.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 15Psychometric Adaption of the Impulsive Driver Behavior Scale in a Chinese Sample(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2020) Qu, Weina; Zhou, Mu; Ozkan, Turker; Bicaksiz, Pinar; Zhang, Kan; Ge, YanImpulsivity plays an important role in aberrant driving behavior and crash involvement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Impulsive Driver Behavior Scale (IDBS, Bicaksiz & Ozkan, 2016a) with a Chinese sample. Two hundred and ninety-nine drivers completed the Chinese version of the Impulsive Driver Behavior Scale, the Driver Behavior Questionnaire, the Big Five Inventory and some social-demographic and traffic violation items. A confirmatory factor analysis indicated that a four-factor solution with 20 items yielded a better fit to the data than other solutions. The reduced IDBS showed good reliability and a stable structure. Drivers' functional impulsivity was positively correlated with positive driver behavior and some ordinary violations. Meanwhile, the other three dimensions of dysfunctional impulsivity showed negative correlations with positive driver behavior and positive associations with aberrant driving behavior and penalty points and fines. Impulsive driver behavior is also associated with agreeableness and conscientiousness. These results provide evidence supporting the IDBS as a reliable and valuable instrument for measuring driving impulsivity in the Chinese traffic environment. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Article Citation - WoS: 72Citation - Scopus: 73Psychometric Validation of the Turkish Nine-Item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (igds9-Sf)(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2018) Evren, Cuneyt; Dalbudak, Ercan; Topcu, Merve; Kutlu, Nilay; Evren, Bilge; Pontes, Halley M.The main aims of the current study were to test the factor structure, reliability and validity of the nine-item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form (IGDS9-SF), a standardized measure to assess symptoms and prevalence of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). In the present study participants were assessed with the IGDS9-SF, nine-item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale (IGDS) and the Young's Internet Addiction Test-Short Form (YIAT-SF). Confirmatory factor analyzes demonstrated that the factor structure (i.e., the dimensional structure) of the IGDS9-SF was satisfactory. The scale was also reliable (i.e., internally consistent with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.89) and showed adequate convergent and criterion-related validity, as indicated by statistically significant positive correlations between average time daily spent playing games during last year, IGDS and YIAT-SF scores. By applying the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) threshold for diagnosing IGD (e.g., endorsing at least five criteria), it was found that the prevalence of disordered gamers ranged from 0.96% (whole sample) to 2.57% (e-sports players). These findings support the Turkish version of the IGDS9-SF as a valid and reliable tool for determining the extent of IGD-related problems among young adults and for the purposes of early IGD diagnosis in clinical settings and similar research.
